McCain could say a lot of things to a great many people and have a point, telling the GOP it needs to get back to its conservative roots isn't one of them. What worries me most about him is that he'll split from the GOP, attract a marginal number of votes and open the door for Hillary in 08. And she'd probably make him Sec Def for the effort.
It's almost as if he's detached from reality. Aside from the legislation he's passed, there's the issue of his years of political intrigue flirting with Liberals undermining conservative positions again and again.
Are we supposed to believe that McCain has had some Come to Reagan moment, similar to his come to Jesus moment in re-approaching evangelicals? I'm not buying it.
If he wanted to run as a moderate, at least it'd be honest. But I don't see him selling this to legitimate conservatives. I don't anticipate his last hurrah for the Presidency lasting very long. I believe he'll be seventy years old in 08. Add that to how many conservatives feel partially betrayed by Bush right now and I don't see them gambling on someone like McCain.
Back to the third party deal, the way the GOP is going they are going to encourage a third-party run from someone on the Right. We could easily be looking at a Clinton presidency if that happens. Like her husband, she'd get elected with around 40% of the vote. Ugh!
WASHINGTON, Nov. 17 — Senator John McCain said Thursday that Republicans had lost the midterm elections because “we abandoned our principles” on fiscal policy and government restraint, inviting a backlash from Americans over what they saw as widespread hypocrisy.

I won't vote for McCain, Rudy or Newt. But especially not McCain.

I'll vote for the first Republican who refuses the sickening mea culpas that threaten to suffocate us. Get some balls!

Completely agree with Norma, old timer, and Phoenix. I held my nose and voted for the Repulsicans a couple of weeks ago. Not again...unless they nominate someone with 1) balls (doesn't have to be male), and 2) is an actual conservative.
