Say It Ain't So, Joe Yo Mammana

Heh! Big surprise. Always nice to see old friends in the news. Unfortunately, I had a tip about the bit re Crime Stoppers. Sad to see it go that way. Asshole.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- A convicted felon-turned-philanthropist who has offered reward money in several high-profile cases was arrested on a gun charge, authorities said Thursday.

Federal agents found a loaded handgun Wednesday in Joe Mammana's nightstand, according to an arrest warrant.

FBI and IRS agents were searching Mammana's suburban Philadelphia home for evidence of mail and wire fraud, authorities said.

There was no telephone listing for Mammana. Messages left at his office and with his attorney were not immediately returned.

Mammana, who owns a Pennsylvania egg farm, offered $250,000 last year in the disappearance of Alabama teenager Natalee Holloway in Aruba.

But he has his own lengthy rap sheet that includes aggravated assault, larceny and narcotics violations, felony convictions that make it illegal for him to have a gun. He was in federal custody pending a hearing scheduled for Friday.

Last week, the head of a crime stoppers group in central Ohio who had sued Mammana said he was beaten by a baseball bat-wielding attacker who told him to drop the suit.

Central Ohio Crime Stoppers sued Mammana on Nov. 15 seeking $131,000 the group said he had pledged as a reward. Mammana said the group forged his name on a contract and denied involvement in the bat attack on Kevin Miles.

Female Suicide Bomber: Al Qaeda Tactics In Somalia

Surprisingly, this today is only the second ever suicide bombing in Somalia. Given the scale of the attack directly on the government building, look for there to be many more.

How effective Ethiopia turns out to be, with our discreet help, of course, will likely determine how long it is before we need to commit troops. What troubles me most is that it could very well be after another large strike here in the US.

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) -- A veiled woman and two other suicide bombers exploded cars outside the base of Somalia's weak government Thursday, killing themselves and three accomplices hours after Ethiopia took another step toward war with its Islamic rivals in the country.

Thursday's suicide bombing was only the second in the country's history. But the tactic has been widely used by Islamic extremists in Iraq and Afghanistan, both battlegrounds for al Qaeda fighters.

Officials of Somalia's Ethiopian-backed government blamed the attacks on foreign al Qaeda fighters. Somalia's president, who narrowly escaped the first suicide car bombing in September, has claimed Islamic extremists have drawn up a hit list of top officials in his weak administration.

Next Stop, Iran

And why not?

WASHINGTON, Nov. 30, 2006 —  U.S. officials say they have found smoking-gun evidence of Iranian support for terrorists in Iraq: brand-new weapons fresh from Iranian factories. According to a senior defense official, coalition forces have recently seized Iranian-made weapons and munitions that bear manufacturing dates in 2006.

America is fighting a war and it appears Iran is materially supporting our enemies. The evidence from the article takes this above the level of rhetoric.

This suggests, say the sources, that the material is going directly from Iranian factories to Shia militias, rather than taking a roundabout path through the black market. "There is no way this could be done without (Iranian) government approval," says a senior official.

This should be dealt with as an act of war and a few cruise missiles into some number of weapons factories would seem to me to be a proportional response. Or maybe we can send Jim Baker over to help carry Iranian weapons into Iraq.

It's a new day, a new age, there is no time or room for the old realpolitik view. Iran has taken up arms against the strongest nation in the world and Iran should be held to full account.

We need to stop playing political footsie with terrorist supporting states engaged in combat against us and strike them with the severity they deserve.

It isn't like I think it will happen. But it is absolutely what should.

Whoops, Sorry Again, AP

via Hot Air

Update: See-Dubya makes an excellent point about the “burned alive” story. If, as one eyewitness told the AP, all the victims were members of the al-Mashadani tribe, then even if it happened the way they said it happened, this may be less a case of sectarian violence than bad ol’ family feud.

Nah, there's a better way to do away with alleged victims when a phony witness is giving details to the AP ... you just choose someone who moved first to Syria and then back, but out of the neighborhood, last year - and probably to Syria, again. That way, they'll probably never show up.

Dec 2005 -- The al-Mashadani family are middle- class Sunni Arabs who live(d) in the Hurriya district of west Baghdad. Fifteen years ago Mohammed and his sister Ban had each achieved modest prosperity.

Mohammed was a captain in the elite Republican Guard, proud of his uniform and his car, a considerably grander vehicle than anything driven by his neighbours. With the fall of the old regime in 2003, the 37-year-old lost his job and went to live with his mother, Selma.

...

Mohammed and his family were terrified. He fled to Syria and stayed there for a month and a half. But he left behind his wife, four daughters and two sons. After six weeks he called from Damascus to say: 'I miss my children too much. I am coming home even if they kill me.'

The family rented out their house in Hurriyah and moved to Dohra, a tough, mostly Sunni, district in south Baghdad. Mohammed plans to move to Syria with his wife and children if SCIRI wins the election on 15 December.

Why Fear The Left?

As I was saying over dinner with someone the other night, while I'm not crazy about the extreme far Right or the far Left, I fear the Left much more than I do the Right. Did you ever stop to think how most all of the dictators in this hemisphere are Leftists? And out Left has no problem with that? And for all their alleged pacifism, the Left will militarize in a heart beat for what it believes to be the correct cause. And many of the causes of the Left have little to do with what makes America great, or our Constitution.

Dr. Sanity has a related piece well worth reading.

This sort of cognitive dissonance and intellectual insanity is not because they are particularly ignorant of the U.S. Constitution. Rather, it is because as Duke suggests, they have a very specific political agenda that has been slowly but surely changing American society into their utopia. This "social engineering" on their part doesn't give a damn about free speech except insofar as it can be used to forward their socialist agenda. It doesn't give a damn about freedom of religion, except insofar as it can be used to forward their socialist agenda.

In Today's News

I'll be blogging later. For now, Jules Crittenden weighs in on the Bush / Maliki meeting. But as for this,

The bipartisan Iraq Study Group reached a consensus on Wednesday on a final report that will call for a gradual pullback of the 15 American combat brigades now in Iraq but stop short of setting a firm timetable for their withdrawal …

I'd refer you to the lost Roosevelt Eisenhower memo.

-- About those German camps you've scouted out, Ike. We've been taking some losses, so just pull back to the wood line and we'll see what develops. I'll get back to you after the next election.

Exactly the type of worthless watered down piece of crap one would expect from a bi-partisan commission. I'm unaware of any President in history who needed a civilian commission to wage a war.

Remember to check out Jules on Iraq.

Not So Fast, Ed

Ed at Captain's Quarters doesn't think much of a WND article on illegal aliens and crime.

Those claims usually get reported at some point by World News Daily, a hardline conservative news service, which doesn't usually miss an opportunity to relay the latest wild-eyed claim. Today, WND reports that Rep. Steve King (R-IA) put out 'statistics" that illegal immigrants murder over 4,000 Americans every year:

Ed is right to say that we should not demonize illegal immigrants just for the sake of scoring points against illegal immigration. But if WND's numbers aren't to be trusted, neither are the quick thumb-nailed gross population numbers Ed uses in his post to suggest the WND article is absurd. You can see both sets at the links above. But let's look at some real numbers.

From the Center for Immigration Studies:

In Los Angeles, 95 percent of all outstanding warrants for homicide (which total 1,200 to 1,500) target illegal aliens. Up to two-thirds of all fugitive felony warrants (17,000) are for illegal aliens.

That data alone tells you you can't use Ed's gross population numbers of illegal immigrants versus national crime. Clearly there are densely populated areas where illegal immigrants are responsible for an incredibly high proportion of violent crime.

A confidential California Department of Justice study reported in 1995 that 60 percent of the bloody 18th Street Gang in California is illegal (estimated membership: 20,000); police officers say the proportion is undoubtedly much greater. The gang collaborates with the Mexican Mafia, the dominant force in California prisons, on complicated drug distribution schemes, extortion, and drive-by assassinations, and is responsible for an assault or robbery every day in Los Angeles County. The gang has dramatically expanded its numbers over the last two decades by recruiting recently arrived youngsters, a vast proportion
illegal, from Central America and Mexico.

Here's a pdf file from the US House of Representatives. It discusses the incredible crime problem in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley as a result of gangs comprised of mostly illegal immigrants. The Shenandoah Valley is not East LA, yet the crime problem is large and ugly, involving multiple murders.

This below via NewsMax quoting reliable identified sources:

"The U.S. Justice Department estimated that 270,000 illegal immigrants served jail time nationally in 2003. Of those, 108,000 were in California. Some estimates show illegals now make up half of California's prison population, creating a massive criminal subculture that strains state budgets and creates a nightmare for local police forces."

Citing an Urban Institute study, director of research for the Center for Immigration Studies Steven Camorata noted in 2004: "Roughly 17 percent of the prison population at the federal level are illegal aliens. That's a huge number since illegal aliens only account for about 3 percent of the total population."

Federal Prisons aren't reserved for jay walkers and that last item suggests illegal aliens are incarcerated there at almost six times their percent of the gross population. This below from Captain's Quarters:

If King and WND have their numbers correct, that would mean that illegals commit 26.2% of all murders in the US. However, they only comprise less than 7% of the American population, even if one accepts the figure of 20 million illegals here now. Doesn't that seem just a bit strange to anyone?

Using Ed's 7% of population and the proportionality of serious crime among illegal immigrants, I certainly wouldn't feel comfortable saying they weren't responsible for potentially 20-something percent of murders.

Back to NewsMax:

"In March 2000, Congress made public Department of Justice statistics showing that, over the previous five years, the INS had released over 35,000 criminal aliens instead of deporting them. Over 11,000 of those released went on to commit serious crimes, over 1,800 of which were violent ones [including 98 homicides, 142 sexual assaults, and 44 kidnappings].

From California to New York and Heather Mac Donald's reasonably well-known article on illegal aliens and crime:

On September 5, 2001, his handpicked charter-revision committee ruled that New York could still require that its employees keep immigration information confidential to preserve trust between immigrants and government. Six days later, several visa-overstayers participated in the most devastating attack on the city and the country in history.

New York conveniently forgot the 1996 federal ban on sanctuary laws until a gang of five Mexicans—four of them illegal—abducted and brutally raped a 42-year-old mother of two near some railroad tracks in Queens. The NYPD had already arrested three of the illegal aliens numerous times for such crimes as assault, attempted robbery, criminal trespass, illegal gun possession, and drug offenses. The department had never notified the INS.

Is anyone 100% positive of the impact illegal aliens have on serious crime? Maybe not. After all, on both Federal and State levels, the concept of sanctuary cities combined with civil rights apologists have done an effective job of covering them up. So much for America's right to know.

What I do know from just Googling a little bit beyond the WND article is that, whatever the impact, it's pretty darned serious. And who can forget the most heinous crime America has ever seen, the one on 9/11. What was the murder rate that year when a handful of illegal aliens murdered almost 3,000 of us in less than an hour?

Rads On A Plane

Worse then snakes:

Passengers from the following flights are being asked to come forward:
• BA875 Moscow-Heathrow on October 25 - aircraft number GBNWX
• BA872 Heathrow-Moscow on October 28 - aircraft number GBNWX
• BA873 Moscow-Heathrow on October 31 - aircraft number GBNWB
• BA874 Heathrow-Moscow on November 3 - aircraft number GBZHA

Okay, given that the travel details of some have been involved in reporting of the polonium-210 poisoning of Litvinenko, this could get very interesting.

I would think Intel sources already have their eye on certain individuals, especially if it tracks to a particular seat.

Passengers have been asked to come forward after radiation traces were found on two BA planes linked to the death of former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko.

The BA 767 planes operate on routes within Europe and up to 800 passengers on four flights may have been affected.

Bloggers Versus The AP

One theory I have on the mosque attack in dispute between bloggers and the AP is that it could have been being used as a bomb factory in between prayers. It was alleged to have been one before in a story I linked yesterday. If another accident happened and the occupants were killed and burned in that manner, they may have come up with the attack story to cover it up. All they would need would be a bogus or friendly policeman to corroborate it for the AP.

Gateway Pundit points out that an imam involved with the potentially bogus six burned bodies AP report has a very questionable past.

At the Al Tuheed mosque, congregation members accused Dr Al-Dabash of having served in Saddam Hussein's secret police, and of having recently studied in Saudi Arabia, where, they said, he was imbued with the Saudi's extremist Wahabi Islamic doctrine.

One of the items I linked yesterday pointed him out as an extremist.

Someone at lgf claims to have a letter from our military stating the Iraqi government's position is that the AP source does not exist.

I have just learned from Mr. Costlow, mentioned below, that Brig. Gen. Abdul-Karim Khalaf, the official Ministry of Interior spokesmen, will begin his regularly scheduled press conference at noon tomorrow with a statement that Capt. Jamil Hussein, is not a Baghdad police officer or an MOI employee.

Hot Air has a video vent by Michelle on the topic here.

Bring It On

This somewhat ticks me off.

Saudi Arabia Will Protect Sunnis if the U.S. Leaves

It ticks me off because the Saudis should be there already, not simply to protect Sunnis, but to help stabilize Iraq. They could still do a great deal even if it was only in training areas, as opposed to street patrols. I realize they have been co-operating with the US to some degree. But on the face of it, it seems they could have done more.

Hopefully the purpose of Cheney's trip was to gain more Saudi support, not in the event America leaves, but as part of an effort to make things work while we remain.

And as for these idiots, who cares? their actions disgust me on many levels.

BAGHDAD, Nov. 29 -- A bloc of Iraqi lawmakers and cabinet ministers allied with militia leader Moqtada al-Sadr launched a boycott of their government duties Wednesday to protest Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's decision to attend a summit in Jordan with President Bush.

If America hadn't intervened, the ungrateful bastards would still be a clueless, oppressed majority living under Saddam's rule. Now they want to dis us and side with Iran? Screw them, turn Saudi Arabia's petrol dollars loose on the lot of them and send them to hell. They are nothing but proxies for Iran at this point.

Maliki better choose a side when he meets with Bush and he better choose it well. I don't think Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and others are going to sit by and allow Iran to swallow Iraq. The foolish shi'ites might be in for shock if America pulls back. They could easily end up getting their dumb asses kicked, once again.
