Born in an old Philadelphia alehouse, with the barkeep as its first officer, the fledgling Continental Marine Corps was composed of a motley band of adventurers and street toughs; nothing like the 178,000-plus elite U.S. Marine Corps we know today. But somewhere along the way the proverbial formula was discovered. According to tradition – and in Lt. Gen. Victor H. “Brute” Krulak’s book, First to Fight – Marines started telling themselves they were the best. They started believing it, and they’ve been busy proving it ever since.

Mmm, I love a man in uniform.

that gent on the lower right is maybe the finest marine of them all. dan daly won 2 (count 'em!) 2 medals of honor. (so did smedley butler, but butler - to his everlasting credit - never thought he'd deserved the first one, and he said so. in print.) a man's man, a marine's marine, he no doubt commands the contingent of united states marines who currently guard the streets of heaven.
in short, he wasn't a liberal pussy.

Happy Birthday to all my brother and sister Leathernecks.
In the spirit of the day, I'd like to ask for a moment of your time to help us support our own unit of hard charging Jarheads. This is our second year taking care of them ~ they're 13 true and strong. As there are only two such Marine Corps units, they rotate in country EVERY SIX MONTHS. We try to get them letters and packages from their arrival in September through the mail cut-off in Feb.
You all remember what it meant to have YOUR name called at mailcall, right? That's what we're aiming to do. If you can adopt a Marine (or five or six), or can tell trusted, crusty vets about us who might, we'd sure appreciate it. It takes just a second to donate cash but it takes an effort to be a friend. We don't care if you can only afford a stamp ~ that's a piece of mail with a friendly voice attached on it's way. If you've got it in you, we'd love to have you along.
