Talk about a jaw dropping moment, courtesy of a link from Alabama Liberation Front:
The Confederate Memorial has had a special place in my life for many years. During the bitter turbulence of the early and mid1970's I used to come here quite often.
I am not here to apologize for why they fought, although modern historians might contemplate that there truly were different perceptions in the North and South about those reasons, and that most Southern soldiers viewed the driving issue to be sovereignty rather than slavery.
And so I am here, with you today, to remember. And to honor an army that rose like a sudden wind out of the little towns and scattered farms of a yet unconquered wilderness. That drew 750,000 soldiers from a population base of only five million-less than the current population of Virginia alone. That fought with squirrel rifles and cold steel against a much larger and more modern force. That saw 60 percent of its soldiers become casualties, some 256,000 of them dead. That gave every ounce of courage and loyalty to a leadership it trusted and respected, and then laid down its arms in an instant when that leadership decided that enough was enough. That returned to a devastated land and a military occupation. That endured the bitter humiliation of Reconstruction and an economic alienation from the rest of this nation which continued for fully a century.... Jim Webb
Okay, wait, now which candidate is it that's been raked over the coals over the Confederate Flag???
If nothing else, it's great to see the NAACP broaden their horizons and open their membership to a man like Jim Webb, even if it did cost both he and Allen $700.
Webb, who followed Allen's appearance, heard how Allen had been signed up and humorously didn't wait to be asked. "I'm going to get the bear before the bear gets me," he joked in committing to a life membership.

You've definately convinced me to buy Webb's book with that last one Dan. I'm sorry you cannot see the difference between someone's respect for his ancestrial past and someone else's misuse of symbols of that past. Simple fact is, Webb is a dem, it's perfectly ok if he burns crosses in his front yard to advertise minstrel shows in the back. Everyone knows that dems are openly racist and love them for it. Reps on the other hand? well let's just say that Allen better not get caught lingering to check the stitch count on his bed sheets.

It would be comical if it were not so pathetic. democrats shouting denunciation of Sen. Allen for supposed comments about negroes many years ago. BUT, has anyone EVER seen any democrats denunciation of byrd for his earlier MEMBERSHIP in the KKK???????? For that matter, can byrd PROVE he is no longer a member?
byrd is like kennedy. The residents of the state care NOTHING about his vile past, just elect him so he can waste tax payer funds from other states in his state. (Remember a number of years back, the FBI facility he had built with NO FUNDS for operations)
