Right now, we would have to say that control of Congress has gone from "lean Democrat" to a "toss-up." And that's progress for the Republicans.
Why are Republican fortunes brightening?
The GOP base, alienated by the Foley scandal and the generally dismal record of this Congress, may have fast forwarded to the prospect of a Democratic victory and recoiled. They may have pondered the impact of a repeal of the Patriot Act, a ban on NSA wiretapping and a requirement of having an attorney present in terrorist questioning - and decided not to punish the country for the sins of the Republican leaders.
Premature Inauguration, a troubling malady brought on, some believe, by election performance anxiety coupled with, shall we say, not having closed the deal in a while.
Also possibly pertinent is a pre-occupation with size ... as in the size of the bank account during the very last days of a race. Though one must admit, the Dems have proven themselves expert at foreplay ... teasing voters so unmercifully with claims of success perhaps two weeks too early for it to have been assured.
Oh, they'll continue whispering in our ears ... Pelosi will act as a moderate ... those defrocked judges won't take control of any sensitive committees. If things start to look even worse, they may even attempt to seduce us with the usual Liberal whine. Unfortunately, that more than anything has been proved ineffective in getting right-leaning moderates up to vote for contemporary Dems.
How it'll all end, who's to say. But, as with all good pornography (and what the MSM has been engaged recently is surely that) - one can always hope for a money shot, as in Dewey Defeats Truman, again. Perhaps next election the Dems could improve their performance by thinking about baseball a little more in October, just like many voters seem to do.
I did suggest this just days ago. The desperation is starting to show in their campaigning and in the media over reach. At least I'm a bit less excited about the Democrats prospects today than I was last night ... and feeling satisfied just enough to kick back, have a cigarette, then maybe I'll role over and go to sleep.
I've been nursing the flu, anyway ... so it certainly can't hurt. Buck up, Wingers ... we're not screwed, yet.
Premature Inauguration ... not a character defect, but a disease ... it's called BDS*. Heh! Dean's DNC may have blown its wad too early, leaving Democrats and the MSM with ... well, let's say egg on their face, again.
BDS* - Bush Derangement Syndrome

Whistling past the graveyard.....

I'm looking forward to November 7. Dems peaked too early again this year. Once Rove rolls out the last barrage of ads the wave will be rolling back our way. I'm anticipating a targeted "Dems voted against wiretaps, Pat Act, and harsh interrogation". When we win this time and retain control the Dems are going to go apeshit crazy. It's gonna be awesome.

Wait til the whiners start frothing at the mouth about Diebold, other voting machine mess-ups, and forget that they themselves demanded machines because they themselves messed up in 2000 when a Dem here in Palm Beach County designed a butterfly ballot that confused the [terminally confused already] senescent Dem voters.
Jeffrey Goldberg of the New Yorker, that famous conservative wing-nut rag, recently wrote that a national poll of Americans found that 34% of them considered themselves conservatives, and 21% considered themselves liberals. All polls are inaccurate to some degree, but this is an overall indication of the bedrock sanity of the USA.
However, the disturbing part of the poll is that one out of five Americans consider themselves morally and mentally challenged.

"Wait til the whiners start frothing at the mouth about Diebold, other voting machine mess-ups"
Already happening Dave. The "stolen election" meme is well underway.
