Ezra Klein gets so caught up in shooting the messenger in the form of Christopher Hitchens, he can't possibly have paid any attention to the message he conveys here. In essence, he proves the very point Hitchen's was making, apparently rather forcefully at a dinner party.
It explains, too, why Hitchens and so many like him are quick to inflate the dangers posed by Islamic extremists, to make threats out of enemies and existential dangers out of garden variety terrorists. If they don't, if they allow al Qaeda to remain a degraded organization with limited operational capacity that should be mopped up through diligent law enforcement strategies, then where does that leave them in the eyes of history? Orwell battled against Communism, Hitchens is going to take a brave posture against 27 bearded nuts who want white men to leave their lands?
Inflating the dangers from garden variety terrorists? Good heavens, could there even be such a thing as a garden variety terrorist? What do they do, stomp one's geraniums?
From England today - another garden variety terrorist report.
London - A 34-year-old British man Thursday pleaded guilty to planning a series of terrorist attacks in Britain and the United States, Woolwich Crown Court in London said.
Dhiren Barot, of north London, planned to carry out explosions at buildings in Washington, New York and Newark, which were 'designed to kill as many innocent people as possible,' the court in south-east London was told.
Prosecutor Edmund Lawson said plans had been found by police on a computer after Barot was arrested in August 2004.
Beslan, 9/11, London, Bali, the USS Cole, several embassies ... one minute George Bush has failed because he hasn't caught Bin Laden, the next minute Bin Laden is nothing but a shell, a used up version of your garden variety terrorist? And Klein thinks Hitchens is insane? I think Hitchens has it just about right:
... you've told me all I need to know. I'm not trying to persuade you. Do you think I care whether you agree with me? No. I'm telling you why I disagree with you. That I do care about. I have no further interest in any of your opinions. There's nothing you wouldn't make an excuse for. You know what? I wouldn't want you on my side. ... Fuck off. No, I mean it: fuck off. I'm telling you what I think are standards and you say, 'What standards? It's fine, he's against the Iraq War.' Fuck. Off. You're MoveOn.org. Any liar will do. He's anti-Bush. Fuck off...Save it sweetie, for someone who cares. It will not be me. You love it, you suck on it. I now know what your standards are, and now you know what mine are, and that's all the difference -- I hope -- in the world."

I've loved Hitchens forever. Watching him on Bill Maher's show was too great..
But, yeah - that "27 bearded nuts...." . I guess I'm speechless. For once.
