Dear Tommie,
As a NJ resident who has voted straight Republican for decades, please allow me to congratulate you on throwing away a Senate seat which was there for the taking. I see Menendez has now passed you in the polls, despite his being under Federal investigation.
I count among my friends a good many moderate and conservative voters. Most of us were prepared to vote for you despite your lack of presence and experience. All you needed to do was to continue to point out Menendez's troubles and attempt to present yourself as a reasonable moderate.
Unfortunately, twice now you have injected yourself into sensitive debates in which you absolutely didn't need to be involved. First you called for Secretary Rumsfeld's resignation and now you have done the same for House Speaker Dennis Hastert. FYI - my reaction and that of many of my friends was, who cares?
I'd remind you that in his second campaign, Ronald Reagan won something like 60% of the New Jersey vote. I didn't know Ronald Reagan ... but I didn't need to know him to realize that you are not even close to being him.
As you have left NJ voters with no real choice come election day, except perhaps between Democrat and Democrat-lite, I imagine a great many right-side voters will now simply stay home. I will not. And as I can not fathom voting for Menendez, I'll be forced to leave the Senatorial slate blank.
Good luck in the NJ State House, evidently it's where you belong. I doubt you could have run a more foolish campaign if you tried. I'd suggest if you have designs on higher office in the future, you disappear for a while and come back with a D after your name. At least that way, people will more clearly be able to figure out what you genuinely are.
My greatest fear over your going to Washington at this moment is that some deranged politician might send you a dirty email and send you back home crying to Dad.
Sincerely,
Dan Riehl

"I'll be forced to leave the Senatorial slate blank."
All good conservatives are rooting for the Democrats this November!
I understand the past 12 years have been traumatic for the radical Republicans. A party that wishes to see the federal government drowned in the bathtub is obviously going to be ill-suited to actually be the governing party.
I think all good conservatives and all good Americans will be pleased to see the GOP back in its natural role as the loyal opposition. Maybe after a decade or two in the wilderness preaching the wisdom of privatizing Social Security, the GOP will be ready to rejoin the reality based community.

I saw him in a TV interview tonight and I was apalled at his idiocy. I kept thinking, "why are you blowing it?"

At times I am embarrassed that McCain represents my state and tell him so.When it comes to the bottom line, tho, John is better than any Democratic choice that I have.
Likewise, the choice that you have may be distasteful, but to quit is to leave the entire country in trouble. I sincerely hope those of you in NJ DO NOT leave your ballots blank for the sake of all of us!
