He must be guilty of something based on his resignation.

However I find it hard to imagine that anyone, even a minor would keep instant message records. For all of this to come out right before elections is questionable. If I had a report of something so inappropriate, my first contact would have been with law enforcement not the NEWS. One report stated that a high school that sent these young people to work on the hill, advised students to beware of Foley. My thought is who the fuck would send students knowing there was a potential for abuse.

And yes, Instant message content can be changed after the fact. To my knowledge there is no documented record on any service provider for instant message posts. Still I have to ask myself, why would a teen who seemed so willing to talk with Foley, save the messages?

It wasn't only instant messages, he sent email messages as well too. In my opinion I think he resigned because he doesn't want an investigation, which makes his actions questionable. The parents of the boy already said they weren't going after Mr Foley. Who knows what is going but to give a 16 year old boy 'guilt' goes too far with me. Why does Foley want to 'chat' with an 16 year old anyway? He should know better.

You see, IM transcripts can be very easily altered. VERY easily. They can be altered to make it seem like you didn't respond to messages, like someone said something they didn't, that there was a time lapse between messages, ANYTHING. They are easily toyed with.

And, last time I checked, basic AIM [unless being used through Trillian or Adium] doesn't have a transcripts-option that saves your conversations...I think you have to do it yourself, which is even more suspicious.
Most anyone wouldn't save their IM convos...even adults. It's just the feeling that someone could invade your precious privacy.

If the teenager was so 'freaked out' by the e-mails and IMs, why didn't he stop talking to Foley immediately and turn him in to the proper authorities?
It seems unlikely that someone so grossed out over an old man hitting on him, not to mention an old man in republican office, would continue talking to him and then tell the news about the transcripts when he felt like it.

You are a fool. Of course AIM and Trillian log transcripts. They (by default) log all conversation history. Sure, it's on your computer, but where else would it be for privacy? I'm sure it's entirely likely that these were faked.... not... that would be like asking for a lawsuit. However, since Foley resigned, admitted it, and has now enrolled in counceling, he as obviously admitted his guilt. See, now isn't it easy to accept the truth?
