Apparently some of the 2996 project volunteers didn't step up and some were asked to complete the mission.
One of the individuals who needed to be profiled was Kenneth Warren Van Auken, husband to one of the so-called Jersey Girls. There's a proper tribute here, details at link above.
"I love you. I'm in the World Trade Center. And the building was hit by something. I don't know if I'm going to get out. But I love you very much. I hope I'll see you later. Bye."
-- Kenneth Van Auken, Sept. 11, 2001

You know I was really feeling sorry for myself this morning. But not anymore. That was one of the most heart felt pieces of work I have ever read.

That was a very good tribute to Kenny. I'm glad you had it or I would have missed it. Kenny covered our acct here and I always enjoyed talking to him. He was a good man. May GOD bless him and all the others. Thanks

Mr. Laitner: You actually KNEW him? And he went by "Kenny"? That's fascinating to me, because when I was researching him, all I ever found was "Kenneth," so I tried to avoid using the informal "Ken" in the tribute.
