Traditionally, we mourn well in America. It's ironic that such a free and positively celebratory Republic would be so good at mourning. But we are, always have been and, hopefully, always will be.
Yet, even today our enemies have issued new statements outlining a new purported line of attack.
CAIRO, Egypt - Osama bin Laden's deputy warned that Persian Gulf countries and Israel would be al-Qaida's next targets, according to a new videotape aired by Arab broadcaster Al-Jazeera on Monday, the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.
Ayman al-Zawahri accused the governments of Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia of supporting Israel's war against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Even before that announcement, I found myself concerned, not with America's ability to mourn, but with her ability to respond. Five years ago an enemy as evil as any we have ever faced succeeded in carrying out one of, if not the most heinous domestic attack in our history.
And five years on, once today's remembrance is past, what is it we will be debating? Should we profile, what will the world think, and what of the UN? Ridiculous concepts like disproportionate response have now been introduced through Israel's attack on Hezbollah in Lebanon ... how long before, like preemption, that nonsense becomes the latest naughty word hurled at those who would fight to protect America by the dangerously misguided Left?
Bad men, evil men muster, plot and train in groups and camps around the world with the precise idea of repeating a 9/11, only this time worse. And somehow it is wrong to try and preempt such a thing from occurring? Suddenly, it's impolitic to respond to such attacks with every last bit of our will and capability? What madness.
Look at the hole in New York today where 3,000 or so Americans lie dead and cry if you wish, but don't tell me we shouldn't be using every element of our resources and shred of our will to fully eradicate such an evil from the face of the earth, so it might not happen again.
I simply cannot imagine how, in America, of all places, a current leadership determined to finally play offense against a consistently building threat can continually be attacked by those who, at best, have nothing more to offer than some half-hearted notion of defense.
Has America become a Nation so embarrassed, so guilty feeling over its own might, that it's been reduced to a quivering little sissy who would opt for hiding, for shrinking in unto itself, or simply running away in the face of a fight for her life?
If so, then perhaps we've mourned well and long enough. Radical Islam is an evil, life taking force on the move around the world. It's time for America to wipe the tears from her eyes and start using every means and weapon at our disposal to kill it, to wipe it out.
Frankly, it is well past time that we once again begin issuing some threats of our own.
I feel like I'm in good company given Michael Ledeen is still angry.
Also of note, Christopher Hitchens weighs in here.
And, as they recently said of something of mine, Pajamas Media has a round up, belaboring the point.
