Why Bash ABC?

ABC News blog The Blotter is pretty bold for the mainstream media; they’re apparently using Movable Type with open comments. And they’re getting slammed by their own readers for a story about the informant (a captured terrorist) who dropped the dime on Zarqawi:

Fellow Righties are screaming at ABC for publishing the name of the informant who gave up Zarqawi. Seems silly to me. I imagine that's precisely what our intelligence services wanted.

Naming an al-Qaeda affiliate as the informer does a few things. It tells terrorists they need to look over their shoulder, because their networks are not as secure as they might like to think.

It could also cause some infighting due to the various nationalities involved with the group. All sorts of fun dynamics could come into play from leaking the source for the information on Zarqawi.

If you talk to a Fed, they'll tell you the end of the Mob's banner years came when people inside started to talk. It's played hell with that organization. No doubt our Intel folks would eventually welcome a similar result here.

My post was not meant as a commentary on torture. I simply wanted to point out that this guy wasn't an 'informer' he was captured. Insurgencies generally structure their organizations in small decentralized cells to prevent captured fighters from revealing too much.

What matters is we got great intelligence information out of him. And also what matters is the Jordanians are willing to work along with the U.S. and the Iraqi government to end some of this.
