More: Apparently Japan knows something Murtha doesn't, as they have opted to put off any decision regarding withdrawing troops. Also, Austrialia is announcing a re-deployment of sorts in that their troops will begin to take a back-up role to the Iraqi troops.

TOKYO - Top Japanese officials delayed a decision Monday on when to withdraw Tokyo‘s troops from southern Iraq , pending the transfer of security in the region to Iraqi authorities, officials said.

The group agreed a decision on the timing of a withdrawal would have to wait for Iraqi moves to take over security responsibilities in the area from the British, Nukaga said.

Aussie angle:

Prime Minister John Howard says the new role for Australian troops in Iraq will be to provide back-up security to Iraqi troops in the area around Tallil, in southern Iraq.

The Iraqi Government is expected to announce soon that local forces will takeover responsibility for security in the Al Muthanna province, where Australian troops are currently based.

The current role of the Australians is to guard Japanese military engineers, who are expected to leave the area shortly.

Mr Howard has declined to say whether the new assignment will be more risky, but he says deployment in Iraq is always dangerous.

"We would continue to see a role, albeit a somewhat different role, for our forces in southern Iraq," he said.

I honestly thought that I was not hearing correctly when I first heard Murtha speak about his Okinawa Option. Seriously, I'm glad somebody picked this up.
