President George W. Bush again vowed to complete US military missions around the world as the United States honoured its war dead with the American toll in Iraq closing on 2,500.
Tears welled in the US president's eyes as he gave his latest annual speech at Arlington National Cemetery, just a few days after admitting that he had some regrets about the Iraq conflict and that it had caused "consternation" in America.

Now more than ever, it's important to note that whether we win or lose in Iraq, it will be because of decisions not yet made, not because of any decision, or factor of the past.
Decades of summits and talks failed to produce anything resembling stability in the Middle East. The region's instability has given rise to a theocratic fascism showing no desire for containment, nor the ability to co-exist in a world comprised in part of democratically free nations.
Terror is their weapon and propaganda their tool. And nothing short of ripping out the supporting roots of their ideology will ever prevail in what is clearly a global war on the terror of Islamic jihad.
The battle is being fought in Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran. And it will not end any time soon. It's imperative that America not lose her resolve.
