I can't help but get a chuckle out of this one from the New York Times. For the record, while Christian and conservative, I am not a part of the Christian Right, as it's called. I believe in a secular state, just not one that's morally or spiritually bankrupt. Anyhoo - see this, before I let you in on the joke.
WASHINGTON, May 16 — House Democrats, trying to capitalize on conservative dissatisfaction with Republicans, are reaching out to Christian voters with radio advertisements critical of Republican proposals to overhaul Social Security.
In a campaign tied to appearances by President Bush on behalf of House candidates later this week, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has bought time on stations with Christian and conservative audiences to try to remind those who traditionally vote Republican of their party's plan to add private investment accounts to Social Security.
While Republicans have stepped up efforts in recent years to cut into traditional Democratic strength among Catholics, Hispanics and older Americans, among other groups, the radio campaign is a rare effort by Democrats to appeal to a dependable Republican constituency.
What I find so incredibly funny, yet sad, is that I often attack the democrats because of the cruel disservice they have provided to Black America.
How many years have Blacks voted in lock step for Democrats only to receive a pittance in entitlements because the Dems believe in distributing fish, as opposed to my concept of conservatism, which would teach and genuinely enable all men to fish for themselves and so enjoy their own real full measure of the dream America has to offer.
Heck, Bill Cosby has, on his own dime, tried to do more for Blacks in recent years than Democrats ever really have. The pink elephant in the room no one will talk about being the Dems racist southern past that still views Blacks as inferior and in need of special care. :o
And the flip side of the equation is the so-called Christian Coalition that votes lock step for the Republicans. Has the ACLU stopped being successful in tearing crosses down from small town veteran's memorials? Haven't the Ten Commandments been carried out in bulk from the court house steps? A gay marriage amendment, abortion on demand, has the Right really delivered much of anything to their religious loyalists? And isn't that really all riding on how some as yet unknown Supreme Court Justice votes?
Good grief. Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. It's 143 years later and the politicians of this country are still fighting battles over slaves.
Pardon my moment of impolite candor. Perhaps I'm simply in an all too honest mood for anything approaching good punditry right now.

Dan, since you say that the Democrats have only followed through on a "pittance" of their promises to the African-American community. Tell me what the Republican party has done in the past six years, or before that? Both parties have the knowledge to get things done, but one party is distinctly unwilling to do anything. The Republicans have other priorities than the African-American population. So much so that they don't even bother to make promises, never mind follow through in any way.
Your "teach to fish" analogy is an interesting choice, as is your hearkening back to slavery. But let's be clear that the African-American population is demanding solutions, not handouts, and while slavery send more than a century ago, it was 50 years ago that segregation and prejudicial laws ruled the day. Well within the memory of the current population. If you think that way of thinking somehow went away 50-143 years ago, may I suggest you flip through the recent news reports. It is alive and well in this country. But I must wonder who those people vote for and why.

This is funny. For someone who appears to be smart you have no idea of history. In 1950s and 1960s when the Dems started pushing for Civil Rights for blacks, a lot of the more racist southern Dems left the party and became? you guessed it Republicans. Why was that? Learn some history. Even northern Dems left, like that grand old racist Ronald Reagan.

Grand Wizards like Robert Byrd? And Kennedy's politics are based upon the same racism as the rest. If they didn't view blacks as inferior they wouldn't constantly pander to them because of an alleged inability to succeed on their own. You just don't like hearing the truth.

Dan, don't forget that the entire racist "dixiecrat" wing of the Democratic party fled to the Republican party when the Democrats embraced the civil rights movement. I am a Republican, and am disgusted by our party's embrace of these half-wits.
Nevertheless, I do not view Democratic party policies as "racist." They are dealing with poverty issues, which do disproportionately affect blacks. I don't have to agree with those ideas, but I do not consider them "racist." Here in Alabama, unfortunately, the racists tend to vote straight-ticket Republican.

"I do not view Democratic party policies as "racist." They are dealing with poverty issues, which do disproportionately affect blacks."
Actually, there are more white folks on welfare than blacks. "fixing" the problem of poverty with a paycheck is not a fix. It in fact creates a dependency class. Just as dumbing down education ONLY creates poorly educated graduates. OK, maybe it isn't racism but it is most definately classism and replacing one form of bigotry for another is no solution. And if we're going to discuss how racist dems changed to republicans "in the south". Let us begin in the beginning. The republicans freed and abolished slavery in the first place and the racists ran to the democrat party when southerners began getting the right to vote returned. Here's a newsflash. MUCH of the racist hatred ideas sprung from under the boot heels of the Freedmen's Bureau. Ninety odd years later as people like JFK (who would be ashamed of his party today) began pushing Civil Rights the "Dixiecrats" fled to the republicans. Strangely, people like Byrd and Wallace, both high klansmen stayed with the dems. Talk about halfwits.
The dems want to send money and be left alone until the next election. Ever wonder why after 40 years of a dem controlled congress, the presnt adminsitration is blamed for levies failing? Of course not, the damend tress are in the way of our view of the forest. Conversley the republicans claim to want to enable "the poor" to raise themselves by their own bootstraps. But where are the programs? Where are the tougher schools? Where is the job training? GWB has thrown away even more money on dem programs than the dems....with the same results. Point being that there is not, IS NOT, a nickles worth of difference between either party yet partisans throw on the blinders and follow these cretins like sheep to the slaughter. We must create a viable third party, a populist party made up of people who TRULY care about doing what is best for the country..rather than pandering for specials interests. Open your squinty eyes and see the truth of our farcical 2 party system!
