Blogs are buzzing over Rep. Patrick J. Kennedy (D-R.I.) and a possible DWI which seems to have gone uninvestigated up until now. But in looking around, there's something else peculiar as regards Kennedy and a recent driving accident. Stay with me, I'll make it quick.
Drudge points to another recent accident:
This morning's incident comes just over two weeks after Kennedy was involved in a car accident in Rhode Island.
Google news doesn't have it, it's almost nowhere to be found. Though I did find two mentions of it - here and here
A call was placed to his Rhode Island office yesterday, but was not returned. I am somewhat puzzled by the police officer’s description of Patches’ physical condition: “Appeared Normal.”
Yet, during the same time frame, Kennedy was in the news for an accident which caused him to miss at least one appearance and receive several stitches to his mouth.
The hammer's head flew off and struck Kennedy in the face. Blood everywhere . Kennedy was rushed to the hospital to get six stitches in his lip.
The congressman canceled appearances yesterday. "He's kind of on the mend," said press secretary Robin Costello . "The injury is right to the bottom lip, so it's a little tough to talk." The famed Kennedy teeth, however, were uninjured.
The emerging story looks bad enough given that Kennedy is one of the DC politicians who impose Federal guidelines linked to dollars for local DWI enforcement resulting in road blocks and such for the average American and no end of public education dollars spent on the serious issue of driving drunk.
But given the total lack of news coverage around another alleged recent car accident and the hammer story, I'm wondering if there isn't a little more going on besides a possible cover up of events last night.
Hopefully there still is something at least called the public trust and someone in the DC power structure, or the MSM has the honesty to start asking some serious questions of Representative Kennedy.

Good pickup.
Damn.

Catnapping...
The President did not put us in an illegal war. All actions were authorized by an act of Congress and supported by quite a number of UN Resolutions that required Iraq to fess up on WMD. The Iraqi government chose not to adhere to the surrender accords from GW I and chose to purposely obfuscate the inspection process. But why let a few facts get in the way.
When asked for comment on the latest Kennedy driving incident...Mary Jo Kopeckne was silent...
You can wake up from your catnap now. I am sorry to let the facts get in the way of your liberal diatribe.

Sounds like he's been doctor shopping. Minor accidents and ailments = pain pills and he's abusing them.

This looks really bad for the Capital Police.
Let's call a spade a spade. Kennedy shouldn't have the pull to get the Capital Police to impede an investigation... they have guns and radios, he doesn't, and they should have "layed down the law"...
... unless they were ordered to back off because of his claim that he was going to a vote at 2:45 AM. If there was no vote and he lied to the police, then I believe he is guilty of obstruction of justice: a felony.

Since the officers on the scene and a hostess at the bar have already said he was loaded you can rest assured that somebody else will soon end up with a Mustang coming thru their grill.

Just wonder if Cindy McKinney will use this to bash Cap Hill Police. Will she say "special treatment for whitey" or keep her mouth shut "because it is a fellow Dem"?
Just curious
You know if this was a GOPer Ditzy Cindy would be hollerin' "racism racism racism"
Posted by: DoorMart | Friday, May 05, 2006 at 09:00 AM
If that were anyone else, they would be sitting in a cell looking at a DWI and fines, license revoked or suspended and a year supervision plus going to an abuse program. HE GET'S NOTHING, I'm sorry, but I don't give a f*ck who is he, he should have been arrested/ticketed right then and there!!!!!! This just pisses me off to the max.

"If that were anyone else"
you mean anyone else not connected.

Yes, I guess that is what I mean, that pisses me off even more.

Yea, I take a sleeping pill before I drive at 2 a.m.
Props though for driving a Mustang. Any man who drives a Mustang can't be all bad
Posted by: don surber | Friday, May 05, 2006 at 10:23 AM
If he is taking Ambien he doesnt belong in a car. However if he has trouble sleeping Ambien can help. I think I will go along with the Kennedy this time. No one was hurt. Cut the guy some slack. Give him a break. We all screw up. I believe the disoriented story. And besides driving under the influence of that is not illegal is it?
Posted by: nova | Friday, May 05, 2006 at 10:24 AM
Ted and RKK,Jr. used to drive around DC in an old yellow Mustang convertible 20 years ago. It was an old car then. 60s style.

No one was hurt. Cut the guy some slack. Give him a break. We all screw up.
Oh goody, no one was hurt, give me a break. How about next time since there were no consequences this time???????? HUH????
Posted by: Sweetie | Friday, May 05, 2006 at 10:33 AM
It was just a fender bender. No story at all except it was a Kennedy. Give him a break. He lost a leg to cancer when he was a kid. He is lucky to be alive. Quit piling on him.
Posted by: nova | Friday, May 05, 2006 at 10:58 AM
No story EXCEPT he was drinking and driving.
Posted by: Sweetie | Friday, May 05, 2006 at 11:31 AM
Driving under the influence doesn't just mean ALCOHOL. You can be cited for DUI for prescription meds, especially the ones that say DO NOT DRIVE OR OPERATE MACHINERY right on the bottle (Ambien).
Next he'll say he was sleep walking when he does a Kennedy golf club bash, a Kennedy rape, or a Kennedy drown & dash - and we'll go along with that too because he was alseep & 'disoriented'?
This is as laughable as a sleep walking murder case - I'm not saying it isn't true - but it's funny as hell as doesn't excuse his negligence.
Why does someone taking Ambien - a known intoxicant designed to make you pass out - who finds his way into a car then crashes and babbles on about 'needing to vote' at 3AM, get a pass, when someone drinking alcohol who finds his way into a car & crashes while 'disoriented' doesn't?
What prescription med would be good enough to call it illegal for some of you? Oxycontin? How about Halcion? How about a combo? According to some people's backwards thinking, this would be legal while driving? Could I drive around with a
Try it yourself - and find out what happens if your last name is Kennedy. Driving on the cell phone is illegal in most places now - don't think for a second that driving while using Ambien isn't.
He should be treated the same as Cynthia McKinney - no doubt about it.

Where is the Dr and the perscription to back it up?

"I believe the disoriented story."
He's a Democrat. Do your own math.
"And besides driving under the influence of that is not illegal is it?"
You can technically get a DUI if you've had too much of anything that affects your motor skills -- including coffee.
It's just not often enforced for things other than alcohol.

"He's a Democrat. Do your own math."
...and for the record, I'd-a used the same line if he weren't. That's just too good a set-up to let it go.

Don't worry, they will "get one"

The Boston Herald reported Friday that Kennedy had been seen at a Capitol Hill restaurant and bar, Hawk and Dove, in the hours before the collision.
"He was drinking a little bit," a hostess told the newspaper. The Herald also said a bartender from a nearby establishment also saw the congressman at Hawk and Dove.

IMHO - this smells to high heaven. First of all, why should anyone, no matter who they are, get different treatment than anyone else. The law is the law, period, no matter who you are, what color you are, or whether you are rich or poor, it SHOULD make no difference.
He was driving with his lights OFF, he was driving erratically and he hit a barricade, just missing a police vehicle. Now I ask you, isn't that probable cause for giving a breatholyzer test?? If they weren't trained in giving such a test, transport the driver to the nearest hospital and have a blood test drawn. I assume he has the right to refuse and then the law kicks in.
At the very minimum they should have secured a breatholyzer or blood test and then released him.
I have no love lost for the Kennedys (especially Ted), but I wouldn't wish anything on them that wasn't true either. This guy got a pass BIG TIME and it stinks and I hope someone follows up on it.
Apparently there are witnesses who saw him at his favorit watering hole that night, so there should be some record of what he drank if he used a credit card or ran a tab. Someone should certainly investigate.
What a joke of an example this sets for young teen driver starting out. I am absolutely disgusted with this family and their unprofessional conduct while representing the 'people' of their home state. They are basically power/money grabbing scum! IMHO Moey

Yes, I know he said he 'wasn't' drinking, but today there are apparently bartenders/waitresses that will state that he was drinking. No matter what he said, he was driving erratically, hit a barricade and had his lights off and almost hit a police car.
Now, I don't know about DC, but in my state that is probable cause to test for alcohol/drugs. Of course someone is going to say I haven't been drinking - who would believe him - he said he was late for a 'vote' too, but at 3 a.m., in the morning??? They had adjourned hours earlier!
He got a pass - plain and simple - just because of who he 'thinks' he is. IMHO Moey
Posted by: moey | Friday, May 05, 2006 at 02:35 PM
As a DC resident I will tell you any car driving anywhere near the Capitol at 245am is going to draw attention. As it should. But they cant prove drinking. No tests were done. He has a good excuse. Give him 3 tickets and forget it. A very minor fender bender. No one was hurt. It would not even be a story if he wasnt named Kennedy. The press is all happy. They have a Kennedy story. That is always good for them. Patrick gets publicity. Now he can run for President.
Posted by: nova | Friday, May 05, 2006 at 02:41 PM
Moey, I was being sarcastic, he was drinking, he got a pass because of who is he, that is just not right. They already have proof of that. Anyone going to act on what they now know?? Probably not, after the fact now, too late. Hope this was a wake up call for him drinking and driving anyway.

It could be a "youthful indiscretion".

It wouldn't matter to me if his name is Kennedy, Bush, Cheney, Hilton, Cruise, etc, etc, if it had been Joe Blow from Soho, he would have had the screws turned on him big time. This is BS and those POLICE MEN know it.

Just read he is going into "rehab", I feel all warm and cozy inside now. Doesn't remember a thing, (wonder why), and when he returned..............
Posted by: Sweetie | Friday, May 05, 2006 at 03:24 PM
Hey Sweetie, he gave a fairly detailed recount of the accident in his initial statements. In his news conference today, he said he doesn't remember anything. How well does that stick in your craw?

Who every is the shift supervisor on duty has a lot of questions to answer...
Since Trent Lott had to step down as Majority Leader for making a remark in passing...
Wouldn't be proper that Rep Kennedy resign his seat and seek treatment. That man has HUGE ISSUES and needs spiritual counseling (Some body get me Shakedown Al or Grifter Jesse on the line please) and the help of his family ...
I pray for him during this difficult time, but he needs to be out of the House NOW!!!!
Any Lib care to justify his staying??? Bring it on...
