If you read the Newsday piece on a video Hillary Clinton is set to use to launch her Senate campaign, you're only getting part of the story behind Hillary's popularity with at least one convert.
ALBANY, N.Y. -- Democratic Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton is getting her bid for a second term under way with a sometimes emotional 18-minute video that features praise from her husband and even some New Yorkers who opposed her candidacy six years ago.
"I didn't vote for her. I think I will this next election," says Tim Damon, owner of Damon Rods in Potsdam, N.Y., whose company's Web site shows former President Bush with a Damon fishing rod.
Well, I would hope so, given that Clinton's Senate Office was key in securing Damon a $25,000 loan and he may have benefited in other ways from his role in a program designed to help sell items on Ebay. At 25k a vote, Hillary may need some deep pockets if she plans to run for the Presidency in 08.
Damon, who - with his six employees - works out of his home in a small, 300-square-foot manufacturing room, says he's looking to move the operation out of his home. Clinton's office helped secure a $25,000 loan, which will go toward the hiring of two additional employees, Damon says.
Tim Damon, owner of Damon Rods, 19 Market St. in Potsdam, says he is hiring two employees - bringing his payroll to eight because of sustainable, robust sales on eBay.
Damon's company is the first of six waves of 15 companies each using eBay to sell home-grown products. A new wave starts every six months. The program, spearheaded by the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce and Sen. Hillary Clinton's office, will add 15 companies to each wave. The companies receive training on how to sell products on eBay, sometimes even receiving grant money, computers and digital money, computers, and digital cameras.
One story with video also indicates Hillary has a pricey custom-made fly rod of her own courtesy of Damon, though I haven't found an instance of her actually using it. Perhaps it'll appear later in the campaign much like John Kerry's now infamous duck hunting trip during his failed Presidential bid in 2004.
Also, there's a little more to tell behind another Clinton supporter said to be "gushing" in the video.
Some of the praise for Clinton fits into the gushing category. "I think of Hillary as a lioness protecting children," proclaims Linda Fairstein, a former New York City prosecutor.
The former prosecutor is a millionaire with a history of what some might call gushing based upon proceeds from her sex crime novels and has been sued for over zealous prosecution in one of her most sensational alleged sex crime cases which was overturned on appeal after the suspect spent 20 months in prison.
After having served 20 months in prison during which a fellow prisoner had slashed his throat, Jovanovic was released in December 1999 when the appeals court ruled that the rape shield law had been improperly applied by the trial judge; the parts of email messages by Rzucek in which she talks about sadomasochistic interests and experiences should not have been excluded. In one such message she describes herself as a "pushy bottom" (a submissive person who pushes the dominant partner to inflict greater pain) and in another as the slave of her sadomasochistic boyfriend.
The prosecution unsuccessfully appealed this decision and then again offered a plea bargain to Jovanovic, which he refused. On the eve of the retrial in October 2001, it was revealed that Rzucek was not willing to testify again, and the case was dismissed.
Throughout the trials, Jovanovic had benefited from an extensive and vocal network of supporters; he said that his defense cost about $500,000. In October 2004, Jovanovic filed a civil suit against New York City, claiming that the false allegations had harmed his reputation and that prosecutors had had knowledge of previous false accusations of sexual abuse by Rzucek. The suit also named prosecutor Linda Fairstein, a millionaire from her best-selling crime novels.
