Feingold The Fanatic Strikes Again
To begin with, I think using talk of a Constitutional Amendment to restrict marriage equality isn't necessarily a smart political move right now, though something has to be done if we hope to salvage any notion of an interstate portable definition of legal marriage.
Senator Feingold's Office issued a statement in which the Senator said, "Today's markup of the constitutional amendment concerning marriage, in a small room off the Senate floor with only a handful of people other than Senators and their staffs present, was an affront to the Constitution. I objected to its consideration in such an inappropriate setting and refused to help make a quorum. I am deeply disappointed that the Chairman of the Judiciary Committee [Specter] went forward with the markup over my objection."
But Feingold really needs to grow up and stop professing his Constitutional outrage over every little item or move he doesn't particularly like. Our political process provides ample opportunity for reading and then debating proposed legislation. Feingold seems to know and care more about grandstanding for the far-Left then he does the Constitution these days. I wish I could have seen the exchange below. It looks lie Feingold picked up his toys and went home, er, to call his press office, perhaps.
"I don't need to be lectured by you. You are no more a protector of the Constitution than am I," Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., shouted after Sen. Russ Feingold declared his opposition to the amendment, his affinity for the Constitution and his intention to leave the meeting.
"If you want to leave, good riddance," Specter finished.
"I've enjoyed your lecture, too, Mr. Chairman," replied Feingold, D-Wis., who is considering a run for president in 2008. "See ya."

I REALLY do not think gay marriage is a "problem" which requires even two seconds of our collective attention right now. We have a possible civikl war in Iraq, nukes in the hands of Iran and North Korea, the Taliban reasserting itself in Afghanistan, and. a soaring national debt which is going to soon send our economy into the tank. Not to mention a growing energy crisis. Why in the hell ANYONE is thinking about gay marriage these days (!) is beyond comprehension. Talk about fiddling while Rome burns...
