The headline mentions John McCain not being welcome at The New School come commencement. School President, Bob Kerry, former Governor and Senator from Nebraska extended an invitation for McCain to speak.
... hundreds of students, staff and faculty members at the institution of about 9,000 students have signed paper and online petitions that seek to revoke the invitation.
The protest against McCain results from his alleged position on gay marriage. I say alleged, because sometimes it's hard to tell with McCain. They also seem concerned McCain might bring along a case of the cooties from Liberty University. Of Course, they also mention the war.
Several students and faculty members pointed out that McCain has supported banning gay marriage in Arizona, and that, three days before his visit to the New School, McCain will be speaking at Liberty University, whose founder and chancellor, Rev. Jerry Falwell, has openly expressed his opposition to homosexuality.
Quite a display of Liberal tolerance there at The New School. But I was surprised to read down and see this:
Students at the New School aren’t the only ones revolting against politically charged graduation speakers. Hundreds of students and faculty members at Boston College have voiced their opposition to having Condoleezza Rice, the U.S. secretary of state, appear at graduation and receive an honorary degree.
That item is located here.
Hundreds of Boston College students joined a group of faculty members yesterday in opposition to the Jesuit school's recent announcement that Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has been invited to speak at graduation and receive an honorary degree.
Tension mounted on campus as hundreds of students countered with support for the invitation, and two of the three student newspapers published editorials supporting Rice's visit.
Student and faculty groups acknowledged that Rice -- the latest politician embroiled in a protest over a graduation invitation -- will probably speak as planned. But both sides in the debate expressed concern that the 2006 commencement is being hijacked by politics.
Hijacked by politics? Seems a bit of a stretch as I would think having the Secretary of State speak at your commencement would be quite an honor. Let's see - we have Hillary at Buffalo State on May 6th.
Oops! There's more. That's right, Hillary is actually running for something this year. I think those students are right. Looks like commencement ceremonies everywhere are being hijacked by politics. I'm just not sure whose.
The former first lady is set to speak May 6 at Buffalo State University's graduation, May 14 at Long Island University, May 21 at Genesee Community College in Batavia and May 22 at Adelphi University on Long Island.

And hundreds want her to speak-take back the square.

I would venture the opinion that the students of Boston College are more upset about Ms. Rice's educational background, since they are sometimes derogatorily referred to as Notre Dame wannabees.
