Harsh, reasoned. ranting? Every blogger has a basic tone, though almost every blogger fluctuates, too.
The reason the underlying url for RWV is carnivorous conservative is because typepad can't change it once you open the account. And I opened this one after Zell Miller spoke at the GOP convention and a talking head said something about it being red meat.
When I started right within an election cycle, I was fired up. My first banner was a tyrannosaurus Rex chasing John Kerry though a jungle. LOL And, yes, I can still certainly muster up a rant now and then. But I also hope and at least feel that my blogging has matured since then, too.
I do crime stories and it pulls in non-political readers. I don't back off strident politics because I don't want to lose them. I usually do it because I want to keep them, open them up to what I think Conservatism can be - IE not heartless, or war mongering, or any of the nonsense some on the Left would have you think it is. To me, Conservatism has always been about common sense, nothing less, and not much more.
And if I am constantly confronting, or yelling, or poking sticks in the eyes of liberal adversaries, it's likely to turn more moderates off, than pull them in. I have no foolish notions of recruiting large numbers of people to Conservative causes. But if a dialog can spring up with a few willing to understand a reasoned, conservative point of view - who knows, they might eventually support a cause I do care about one day.
And the other critical factor is how some always hammer the MSM no matter what. They have big problems, IMO, but I'd rather see if we can work with them in more cases, than constantly bicker over every little item.
OTB has a good discussion on blogger tone. Though I differ on a few points, I'll let those slide for now. Take a look. What's your blog tone?

Stupid question i'm sure but I've seen so many references to it, What the hell is the MSM?

Main Stream Media - 3 big networks, newspapers, etc...

I try and keep mine reasoned. I occasionally get on a major rant, but even those are a pretty mild tone. I think it's impossible to attract the "other side" of a debate if you are too harsh.
One thing that drives me nuts is bloggers who remove the comments of those who don't agree with them, why bother if all you want to hear is parrots of yourself?

You can attract the other side if you're harsh, but you only attract the harsh other side and nothing is gained. Dan, you've had some very nice liberals commenting here, and that's what I like. Reasoned, considerate talk is a good thing. I get indigestion on the more virulent blogs. I don't even bother any more.
Another big deal is the tone of the blog host. I mean, the blog itself has a tone, but the host is important, as well. If he comes in reasonably willing to consider all points, that's great. Some of the big dogs are just blogging egos. Repulsive.

The tone of RWV is one of the best I've encountered; thanks in part to Dan's eclectic choice of topics, in part to his personality. His is definitely not a "one-trick pony" blog; if you look at the side bar, you can find just about any topic that might interest you. As far as his personality - he definitely has one! He can have an attitude when pushed, but for the most part, Dan's pretty mellow; I enjoy the mix of opinion and humor that he shares with his readers. It's interesting to watch how many people he picks up as time goes on; it sort of reminds me of a neighborhood tavern - people drop in for one beer and end up spending the evening.

I started out more strident -- freed from editors -- then I realized I looked like an ass
I pick on the MSM bloggers who use the anti-MSM meme as a marketing tool
Yoou know the list so I don't have to name the names

I think Dan is a pretty decent guy, was yanking his chain about the irresponsible blogging thing yesterday and he seemed to take it in stride didn't get pissed and ban me didn't remove the post or anything. That is my main criteria for these type of sites. If posts that reasonably question the moderators of the board are not subsequently removed or posters banned etc... It's generally a place where you can freely discuss both sides of an argument which is essentialy the only real quality I look for in a forum because you know not everyone is going to agree all of the time. If you can disagree with the owner of the blog and still have a discussion about it, it speaks volumes in my eyes.
