The blogosphere is great at taking things apart, perhaps even tearing them down. I'd very much like to see if it is capable of putting something together as regards immigration reform. Here are my current thoughts.
Eventually, bloggers, ideally Left and Right, could come together around a small handful of proposals balancing solutions across the key components of immigration reform. That handful of plans would be voted upon through an IP protected on line poll hosted by a blog which could accommodate that capability. Perhaps it's something Pajamas Media, or Wizbang might desire to host.
I've been kicking around my own ideas and have started thinking in terms of a ten point plan that addressed several of the primary components of any comprehensive immigration reform package.
Those elements include, but may not be limited to:
- Dealing with current illegal immigrants
- Assimilation of whatever number of immigrants might be granted a path to citizenship in the US
- Assuming there is a path to citizenship, of what should it be comprised and over how long a time frame
- Voting rights for immigrants in transition
- Providing for permanent security at our Southwestern border
- Providing for policing of illegal immigrants within our borders after any potential initial amnesty is granted
- Dealing will employers hiring illegal workers
- An on going program to allow for guest workers to meet employment demands which may ebb and flow, seasonally, or with the economy
Above is where my thinking is now and lists some of the issues my own ten bullet-pointed plan would address. Perhaps some discussion would generate other topics which would ultimately be included within each ten point submitted plan.
I would administer emails and so forth in an attempt to get the thing off the ground while attempting to solicit a hosting site for a potential poll.
Final submitted plans would be accepted from blogs only, but could certainly be developed from the discussions and suggestions in comments on those blogs.
Anyone interested? Email me, or simply leave a comment.
Thanks.

While many of your thoughts are most likely workable in some fashion, I think the second step or, perhaps first, is to decide what the most important issue we should tackle first. For example, should we make our primary goal to shore up the border? If not, we are not stemming the tide and will not be able to tell Juan from another as far as when they came into the US and which laws apply to whom.

Well, in my own plan, I would close the border with a barrier and allow only regulated immigration. But I was outlining principles, not a plan above. Some might present soemthing different, hence the vote.

I'm really enjoying watching the Republicans twist in the wind over this. The Dems are outfighting them at every turn on this issue, and it's gonna cost y'all.
There need to be changes. The present situation is far from optimal. But any change that this Repub government makes will be a change for the worse, so the best outcome we can hope for is a lot of noise, a lot of stupid talk from GOP pols (always a safe bet) and ultimately, no action from Congress. (Also, often a safe bet.)
Pass the popcorn.
Some years down the road, when the grown-ups are in charge again, maybe we can do something worthwhile about this.
