I have to make a note of this one. If you follow golf at all and are familiar with Phil Mickelson's story, it's a rich one.
He was all but written off even a few years ago as not having what it took to win the big match. Since then, he's won three. It's as much a testament to persistence and resolve as anything else I've ever seen. Hats off to Phil!
Pro golf may still be something of an elitist sport, but even elites can show character. Throughout his career, Mickelson has. I'm glad to see it being rewarded with results.
Once the most unpredictable player on the planet coming down the stretch at major championships, Mickelson claimed his third Grand Slam title in as many years with a nearly flawless 69 in the final round to breeze to a two-stroke victory at 7 under.

Hey Dan, I agree Phil rocks. A funny aside is that Scott Peterson went to high School with Phil Mickleson and were for a time on the same team. Peterson's parents loved to brag about that During the Laci murder investigation.
Also during this time Mickleson was being interviewed and asked if he remembered Scott from high school. Mickleson said: "Scott who?, no, I don't think a Scott Peterson was even on the team". Burn!

I dont actually play golf but I enjoy watching the Masters every year. I was happy to see Phil win this year. I enjoy watching him beat Tiger since the media loves to show Tiger even when he is getting beat.

Dan- I couldn't agree more with your take on Phil. He is such a great guy and always a crowd favorite at Augusta. So happy to see nice guys finish first!

Phil can putt. The rest of them cannot. Why cant pro golfers putt as well as they play tee to green?

The reason the media showed Tiger was because of one reason. Tradition. It is Tradition for the Reigning Masters Champion to give the green jacket to the New Masters Champion. The Jackets actually never leave Agusta National, they stay in lockers in the clubhouse. If you ever see a Masters Jacket outside of Agusta, you're actually looking at a commissioned replica. The actual jacket is inside the given player's locker. Like the Yellow Jersey in the Tour De France, the jacket can ONLY be worn by the Current Champion. Once Tiger took that jacket off, he returned it to his locker, and will not be permitted to wear it until / if he wins again.
So that's why Tiger was there. He was required to be there. It wasn't a "media love fest on Tiger." It was following the Agusta National's rules.

I figure Phil’s either the luckiest guy in the world, or some strange alien lifeform who body-snatched the real Phil’s body in order to play golf, presumably because martians (as we all know) have no athleticism or physical skill.

Dan, Great to see this here on your column!! I have followed golf for many yeats and I personally like Phil becuz of who he is in addition to how he golfs. For me he is a class act, a great family man that seems to have found a balance and sets a fine example. I certainly never wrote him off as many did a few years back - and I think he is only getting better. If I were in sports - to me the ultimate is the Green Jacket win and now he has won twice. Proud of you Phil and proud of you Dan to comment on this!!
