Quite a fuss in the blogosphere over Iran today, I see. Mark Steyn has a longish but informative column here.
As I doubt Israel will allow Iran's nuclear ambitions to come full circle, I see confrontation as simply a matter of who and when. I hope the world doesn't force Israel to act alone in this as it would play too much into radical Islam's hands.
What I would propose is as broad a coalition as can possibly be assembled. If that comes down to the US and Israel, so be it; however, I don't believe that it will. The world's free nations, or whatever number of them have the courage, should mount the world's largest air armada and effectively demilitarize Iran.
Hopefully someone will have the sense to do away with all of the foolish diplomatic nonsense we all already know isn't going to yield any result. More likely, some will string it along while we continiue to plan for the day when we, or whoever will be compelled to act.
I would level its military, including its Navy - obviously its air force and air defenses would have to go first. From there it would be more bombing practice than anything. And I would make the punishment swift and extremely severe.
Certainly I'd toss enough bombs at its nuclear facilities but I wouldn't stop there, not even close. Ideally we'd target its government while sitting, including asshat number one, Ahmadinejad. And I would strike at the controlling Mullahs most especially, too.
We often talk of bombing something back into the stone age. I would lift the concept above the rhetorical and actually attempt to do it as much as possible. Communications, commerce, travel ... all gone. I would then, in essence, embargo the country and then simply wait.
If they sat isolated for ten or a hundred years, I wouldn't care. Obviously Iran needs some time to think. Call it a time out, of sorts, that's politically correct enough for me, how 'bout you?
Here are several blogs to choose from to see what they have to say.
GINA COBB, All Things Beautiful, Gateway Pundit, HolyCoast.com, Confederate Yankee, neo-neocon, Ace of Spades HQ, Cold Fury, Carol Platt Liebau, Slate, The Sundries Shack, BrothersJudd Blog, AMERICAN FUTURE, Daimnation!, In the Bullpen, irishpennants.com and Peaktalk

Wait...Isn't all this one long quote from Dick Cheney?
Have you gone mad Dan? Have you taken any amount of thought at what the repurcussions would be?
I'm sure they have people already in our country waiting for the go head signal if such an attack was to take place.

warren,
People said the same thing about Iraq before the war. This is a huge problem that needed to be dealt with years ago. This "leader" in Iran wants nothing to do with western civiization except it's "greenbacks". What do you think would happen to Isreal if he gets the bomb(which it sounds like he already has) He has already made substantial threats to westerners. I like the "time out" idea, but the other arab countries would put up a pretty strong opposition to this. Not to mention Russia and China. Tis a mess!

Windy
I believe Russia and China have sort of agreed not to get involved in this, but don't hold your breath if you think the Europeans will be too heavily involved, except maybe UK, although Blair is balking at the use of nuclear weapons, which the US believes will have to be used to get deep enough inside the bunkers.
It is something that can go either way unless somebody does something drastic to the leader of Iran to get rid of him.
He is a nut, literally, and believes his actions will help usher in the return of the Mahdi, and high on his agenda is the eradication of Israel. He does not appear to be a man who can be appealed to in a reasonable way, and I doubt he can be bought off, as he lives a very simple life, and shows no interest in materialism, as so many before him have. He is a man with a mission!!
I am praying that President Bush makes wise decisions, because this could be far worse than Iraq has ever been as regards consequences for Israel, the US, and the UK.

I think we are already in Iraq ready to help the Israelis take care of this. This has been in the oven a long time. And I don't think China or Russia will do a thing. If they want to deal with a country that's been bombed back into the Stone Age, fine. I think they're a bit more capitalistically minded than that, though. They like our iPods.
