Blogs are ripe with speculation on what washingtonpost.com might, or should do to replace Ben Domenech.
An open competition on the Web to be the next political blogger at post.com, but instead of hiring one “red state” person and leaving it at that (a strategic error in my opinion) Brady should say that three slots will be filled over the coming year. One from column right, one from column left, and a third voice that is definitely neither of those, which could mean libertarian— or not.
FishbowlDC is soliciting nominations.
Email us at fishbowldc AT mediabistro DOT com with nominations for a suitable conservative Red America blogger.
I have an approach I'd advocate, though I can't say it would fit the requirements of Jim Brady, executive editor, Washingtonpost.com.
The strength of blogging comes from numbers, not necessarily one lone marquee blogger. One blogger anointed as WaPo pundit will not a blog star make. That's simply elevating one blogging individual to MSM pundit out of a group from which there may be far too many to easily choose. So, why not follow the successful formula of a RedState, or an NRO?
Create a predetermined number of slots - 3, 6, 8, or whatever - and audition and screen a small team of conservative bloggers to blog for washingtonpost.com, or a washingtonpost.comRight? The model would also work for the Left, should the site decide to do both.
The posting, as well as the interactivity might be something to see. And a mix of individuals would offer more connections out into different spheres of blogging connections, making the offering rather robust.
The one additional point I'd like to make is, I hope Jim Brady gets himself some bloggers, not MSM types in disguise, or only lawyers, or PhD's. Hopefully he'd at least consider a mix, assuming the model would work. True, the strength of blogging is in numbers. But it's also in a certain grass roots appeal. Why not look down in the weeds for a few gems, instead of picking the low hanging fruit from some MSM tree?
Just my thoughts.

Will the post be able to find a conservative blogger that can find some words of his own? Looks like a tough job.

I think that's a great idea, Dan--doing it like the Corner.
You know who I think would be perfect there, though, assuming they just go with one? Lorie Byrd. Nobody has any reason to attack her like they did to Domenech--and God help that pathetic bunch if they were to do so. It's not like she's inflammatory like Coulter, or even Michelle Malkin (to them, anyway). I'd go fuckin' nuclear (as would the rest of the blogosphere) if they attacked her, because she's one of the most reasonable, nicest people around.

Beth,
Perfect. And you know who the male counterpart to Lorie Byrd is? Dan.
:) The NRO style would be great. Good thinking, Dan!

Too much 'tude, Beth.

...Not that there's anything wrong with that, of course ;-)

Yeah, I know. Just having a laugh at my own expense. They'd toss me out on my arse within 12 hours. It would almost be fun to try it, just to see how much faster I'd be gone than Ben Domenech! (But at least I wouldn't get tossed for plagiarism...just 'tude.) ;-)

You know, I am not right-wing (though, I suppose back in the day, I could've been called a conservative with a small -c- - but nevermind that for now), but I have stumbled accross this site due to the flap at the WaPo and have discovered a new blog worth reading. I may not agree with much of what you say, but it is worth reading because it is intelligent, well written and best of all makes me think a little harder about my own assumptions (isn't that the point of any kind of constructive discourse?).
Anyway, this is a rather round about way of saying that if you (for example!) were to blog for the WaPo, it is likely that us liberals would read every single word. Some of us are jerks (just like there are jerks on your side) who would try to derail the conversation, but there are many of us who would welcome an opportunity for some intelligent (ie, good faith) discussion and debate in this country.
I think your suggestions for WaPo are excellent and I hope that Jim Brady (or whoever is picking up the pieces of this little fandango) makes his way over here to hear what you have to say (I got here via trackback to WaPo, so they wouldn't even have to figure out how to use google!).

Phasis,
Nicely put. Dan has always maintained that he is an independent, and I believe that he is. I think you sensed that in reading him, and if you continue to read him, you'll that more true than not. I can also add that his 'independence' is evident in more ways than just politics. He is all for truth.
I'm an independent, but I find parts of both parties appealing to me - that is, moderate elements of both parties. I read here because there is no in-your-face stuff that you find on other blogs, conservative or liberal. That's a big deal to me. Admittedly, some of the commenters are in-your-face, but that's fine.
I've never been, of course. :)
Please visit and comment often.
(Dan, that will be ten dollars. :)

LOL Thanks Phasis and Phoenix - I appreciate the support. But, you know what? I think the WaPo "may" have hired Ben D precisely because he was a flame thrower. Controversy drives buzz, buzz drives traffic. And if they did, it wouldn't be any different than what many others do to drive site popularity. Sad to think, huh? Blog sand Fox News - perfect together. lol
Thanks, again, to you all for the kind words. Lawd knows I get enough harsh ones. ; )
