I just wanted to clarify something on my previous post. I wasn't suggesting Mexicans couldn't still immigrate, only it would be in controlled numbers according to need. Secondly, regarding Cheney - I wasn't suggesting he run in 08. But if Bush were to be impeached, Cheney would move to President. That's the first reason all the impeachment talk is nonsense. But if Cheney did move up - Hastert and the President Pro Temp could decline, positioning Rice for a run in 08 from the VP slot. That's another reason why the Dems would never impeach Bush. If Condi campaigned against Hillary and had all the benefit of the VP trappings, it would be worse than a landslide.
I'm unclear on whether Cheney would get to appoint the VP, or if they'd follow succession. Either way, ain't gonna happen. But I'm serious about Bush. I stood with him during all the Iraq War issues. I stood with him on Harriet Miers. I've stayed quiet over his budgets. If I wanted a moderate Democrat for President, I would have voted for one.

We Democrats not afraid of a President Cheney. We already think he's mostly calling the shots. Were Cheney to formally assume the Presidency, we'd be no worse off in terms of the policy process, but the White House would be politically much weaker since Cheney has even less charisma than Bush, and lacks the enthusiastic support of the evangelicals. (They'll support him--he's a Republican after all. But he's not One Of Them the way Bush is.)
Obviously, a politically weakened White House is a good thing for all Americans, under the present circumstances.
As for Condi on the ticket, I know I speak for all Democrats when I say: "Please please please PLEASE try this."
Half your voters will stay home on election day. If you put Rice on the ticket, you'll lose by a landslide that'll make 1980 look like 2000. You are, I'm sure, a modern and decent human being. But look beside you. You'll peel off more than a few Democrats with a move like that, to be sure. But for each one you get, you'll lose a dozen of your own.

I loved reading these last two posts Dan, not because of what you think or don't think of Bush but because you open the door to what is wrong with our political system.
Everything these days is Democrat vs. Republican, everything is made so black and white that people don't see the gray areas anymore. I voted for Bush but that does not mean i agree with him on all issues, there are quiet a few things i disagree with but that does not mean i want him impeached. If i had voted for a democrat it probably would be the same way: i would have agreed with him on some things and disagreed on others.
Unfortunatly that does not seem to be allowed anymore, our political climate seems to want us to support a party on all issues , right or wrong , because if you don't your identified as the opposing party.
