Okay, I wound up in front of the TV for much of the Oscars. I was relaxing ... but, riveting show? Not for me. BTW Patton won, or is winning going away since the vote stays open in my war movie poll.
My quick take on the Oscars ... if that's the best of Daily, I'm glad I don't watch his show. But I don't think he was as bad as the WaPo's Shales does - dayum. Actually, he trashes the entire show.
Were there more than eight words in that nonsense that won best song? Puhlease, talk about a token Oscar for making a pitch to the young. Unfortunately, I didn't find any of the nominated songs all that.
Highlights - Reese Witherspoon's heartfelt acceptance speech. I should add the excitement of Mafia whatever was also genuinely fun to see, too bad it wasn't in English. I was especially happy to see Philip Seymour Hoffman win, he's a great talent and I pretty much always admire his work. Jack Nicholson, as always, has a presence most of the rest of La La Lands stars of today lack. Uh, then there was Jennifer Alba's gown ... yeah, ... talk about presents presence. Needless to say, I liked hers!
Unfortunately, unlike Alba, the show mostly struck me as rather flat and not much more than a time killer while I was chilling out. I won't say Daily isn't talented, obviously, but I didn't see much chemistry with the venue. Something is telling me he's done as a host. Who next? Jimmy Kimmel? Don't watch him either but was flipping by the other night and he actually looked and sounded like an adult.
See The Moderate Voice for a complete round up of Oscar reviews.

Anyone know where to find the video of Reese's acceptance speech? I missed the show last night and would love to see it.
Thanks

I knew PSH would win from the moment he was nominated, as he should. Playing that muzak during the acceptance speaches set a subded tone that had to impact the winners.

So funny, Dan. Great piece altogether!
Am I the only one that thought Ben Stiller was fall down funny? I laughed till I cried.

I like the Oscars, movies are a hobby with me.
Can ANYONE explain what that bit with Lilly Tomlin and Maryl Streep was about? Why was it allowed to go on and why was everyone in the audience laughing? It would have been a lot funnier if a giant cane came out from the wings and pulled them off the stage.

So, who gives a crap? Bunch of self preening prima donnas, not worthy of watching. Perhaps they'll give us a break and forget the whole thing next year.

My spelling was fine. You corrected my syntax.
Now run along.

Your syntax made no sense, and I was just trying to help splashtc out. You have singled me out once or twice and done the same to many others and I had had enough. Try making nice sometimes. Now you run off....

The Tomlin/Streep routine was a take-off on the conversational mode of many of Robert Altman's films. Everyone speaks at once, the dialogue rambles, things seems to crash into one another, and no one quite knows what the heck is going on until Altman decides to bring it into focus (if he decides to do so). I thought that part was well done, but if you aren't familiar with his style, then it would fall pretty flat. It's like an inside joke. Lots of people in Hollywood would get it, but not so many people in the general audience - pretty much only film fans or Altman enthusiasts.

His name is
His name is Jon Stewart, not Daily!!!. He hosts "The Daily Show". Jimmy Kimmel is truly a witty guy. If you don't watch him, it's your loss!!!! He should host next year.

I thought the talent represented this year was a cut above, but haven't watched Oscar much. Just try doing what Lily T. and Meryl S. did sometime- genius. Who but Nicholson could upstage such a group of truly creative movies simply in the listing? The'Pimp' song? The friend I was watching with who is black was more embarassed than me; not even musical.
But the worst part was the hack job done by the production to get the commercials in and end before the news; insulting presenters left and right with no respect.
How topical: profits before people.

It was great to see Lauren Bacall as a presenter, even with the teleprompter? screw up..... get the feeling she was thinking "I knew I should have actually memorized this speech and not trusted the lame crutches these young no talent boobs for brains rely on as an excuse for actual acting" and oh, it's back.....
"Why'd I ever agree to this gig......."
I love her, can you tell? What a talent; beauty and brains still matter to some of us, Hollywood.
