California Yankee has an interesting post up on the subject of religion. There's a great irony at work as regards religion in this country.
Liberals like to cast Conservatives as over-proselytizing coreligionists hell bent on establishing some sort of Judeo-Christian theocratic regime. But the Left's own religious moorings which drive their politics are all but ignored.
Meanwhile, the reality is once you move away from a relatively small number of fundamentalist Christian groups, religion in this country is actually rather liberal. I hear more and more people complaining about the political preaching heard coming from a pulpit which was originally designed for words of God.
See link as regards a troubling letter from a coalition of US churches.

"Lord have mercy" is right. Snuff out those religious leaders. Glenn Reynolds' piece is good.
Here's what I have to say - through the words of another:
RELIGION
I am no priest of crooks nor creeds.
For human wants and human needs
Are more to me than prophets’ deeds;
And human tears and human cares
Affect me more than human prayers.
Go, cease your wail, lugubrious saint!
You fret high Heaven with your plaint.
Is this the “Christian’s joy” you paint?
Is this the Christian’s boasted bliss?
Avails your faith no more than this?
Take up your arms, come out with me,
Let Heaven alone; humanity
Needs more and Heaven less from thee.
With pity for mankind look ‘round;
Help them to rise - and Heaven is found.
