Bluto has a post up on this here at Rusty's place - indicating that the MSM is ignoring efforts by the fringe Left to push the Senate towards an attempted filibuster of the Alito nomination. The effort is taking place.
Just got off a conference call with Ted Kennedy and others, and we got a better idea where the Dem's are on all of this.
Levin, Harkin, Bayh, Lautenberg, Lincoln, Pryor and Lieberman (who has not in fact committed) all need pressure. As do Baucus and Menendez.
Georgia10 at Kos is holding a great war room on the filibuster. She provides a really helpful list of fax numbers:
The bold are those in most need of some convincing. Senators Biden, Nelson, Akaka, Landrieu, Dorgan, and Snowe have stated they would likely not support a filibuster. Not a firm stance, like Chaffee, Salazar, Pryor, and Conrad, so there is reason to keep calling them.
They're also circulating contact info on Senators they've identified as wobbly - heck, that's true of almost every Dem Senator and even a few Republicans, these days. But I doubt the issue will yield them anything but an immoral moral victory of sorts.
The usual band of losers - Kennedy, Kerry and Gore are leading the charge. Too bad Kerry isn't leading it alone, they might cross over into Cambodia by mistake. Ask yourself, would you really want to be rallying behind any cause led by that group?
Hillary ET AL are signing on because they need the pocket book of the Left for 2006 and any ambitions they are entertaining for 08. Unfortunately, it's really just another instance of liberal politicians willing to abandon anything that resembles principle to realize a short-sighted gain.
They may assuage the Left and give those yapping masses a warm fuzzy because they caused them to move, however, in the end, the majority of Americans are not going to take kindly to what they're up to.
There is absolutely no question as regards Alito's fitness for the post. But then being qualified never means anything to the Left, so long as you're willing to sell out principle and the Constitution to help them forward a losing cause.
Certainly, America is not Right Wing, but it is moderately right. And there's nothing moderate or right about what some are trying to accomplish at Alito's and the Constitution's expense.

Well said, Dan.

I think that the folks (Kennedy and Kerry) pushing the filibuster are trying to keep the far left base engaged, and writing checks. If they don't at least attempt a filibuster to placate the fringe they risk losing big Soros dollars.

I think it is the other way around....I think that the far left is trying to keep the senators engaged...from the Swiss Alps

Dan: I followed some of those links and all I can say is that I'm amazed at the detail in which the left is keeping score.
Richard John Neuhaus (who was a member of the left during Viet Nam but later became a prominent conservative thinker) has always said that the left patrols its borders and checks credentials much more carefully than the right.
So much for open-mindedness, much less fair-mindedness.

Poor John "Filibuster" Kerry. What a pathetic attempt from someone who is desperate to be President. His yodeling (call) for a filibuster from the Swiss Alps has made him a laughing stock!
