ACLU To The Rescue
Update: Check out the ACLU ad that She of the loverly ass, SondraK has up. As I've said before, why is the AmericanCLU, of all organizations, taking this on?
of terrorists and non-combatants, of course.
A US civil rights groups says it is taking the CIA to court to stop the transportation of terror suspects to countries outside US legal authority.
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) says the intelligence agency has broken both US and international law.
Whenever I think about the ACLU, I get the feeling most of those fowkers are into organic gardening, too ... it's just an impression.

If CIA agents broke US law they should go to jail. This isn't supposed to be some crappy third-world county where the dictator empowers his thugs to be above the law.

It is Very Easy to avoid newspapers and TV and just go about your life, working 60 hours a week to pay the mortgage, making sure the kids stay out of trouble, cutting the grass.....

Avoiding the news or not makes no difference since the "news" is about 90% fabrication and sensationalism. And..they are taught through the public school system to "lead" by following. You will notice that many mindsets are just regurgitation of what you hear and see in the news--that,... is the result of a very good programming job. No questions, no research, just blind obedience, regurgitation of the news, and rah-rah cheers for the next show put on by the cast. Not one in 10,000 has figured out that they are slaves---yet, but they will, and by the time they do, it will be too late to change it. The economics of this program have no alternative course. Jobs will continue to be lost (no matter who is in office) income will continue to decline and more draconian legislation will be passed. You are witnessing the fall of the America founded by the founders, being replaced by an all to known "democracy" such as you see in most other countries, typically third world in nature and function. A dictatorship of the proletariet, yet the proletariat's standard of living never changes.
However, you would think they could figure out the fact that they are working for 60 hours per week and have less buying power than they did working 40 hours a week 5 years ago....and then seek to find out why, instead of looking for their third job, and continuing to put either the "left" or the "right" into office--never noticing that the results are the same--either way. The only difference is the rhetoric, that produces the entertainment that keeps them thinking they have a say. Rah-rah, this guy, and rah-rah, that guy, and nothing ever changes...but they vented, so they are happy.
However since economics is little taught in school,(and what is taught is wrong) the connection between government and economics is not the issue it should be.
It is all about money and control. The few who have the money do not ever want to risk losing it, which is why they want monopolism as seen in fascism and/or communism, both of which are economic systems first, that HAVE to be totalitarian in nature in order to survive, and protect the monopolies. Unfortunately for them, it will never work. Never has, never will. The sad thing is that millions will die proving it.

I'm a Dhim, but that's a 13w compact flourescent full spectrum daylight bulb just for you, Al..... :)
This story was published a long time ago at the beginning of the war but no one really followed up on it then... Even smart people 'choose' what info they are willing to assimilate into their daily lives. It's ALL politics (and fear). Dhim is not necessarily dumb. It is Very Easy to avoid newspapers and TV and just go about your life, working 60 hours a week to pay the mortgage, making sure the kids stay out of trouble, cutting the grass.....
But for blind patriotism to work (as it has so successfully in the past), the electorate has to trust that their elected officials will do the 'right thing'. Which is......? Fight terrorism, attacks against the homeland? But how, when and where are debate-able. Debating leads to deadlock and inaction so......... let's just confuse the heck out of people with circular symantics and dirty underhanded attact rhetoric until they short circuit and give up trying to keep up, out of frustration.
It's called denial Alamo. Works pretty good, too.

Steel--I guess it's not a good idea to build a house on sand if the admonition comes from an authentic source of wisdom, but I was major surprised to discover why the City of San Mateo (south of San Francisco) easily survives the earthquakes in that area: built on a garbage dump! The old land fill sort of moves with the quake ripples when they hit.

Excellent move. As noted before, occaisionally the ACLU will actually take the right side in matters knowing their reputation with Americans will cause Americans to take the opposite side.
Even though it is proven that torture is a very ineffecient system for obtaining information, and, we have those who wish to puke on 200 years of American history without lowering ourselves to that level, this move will do wonders to bring many into the "right frame of mind."
Never mind we are ignoring all laws both domestic and international. Never mind that we are taking these people to lands that have no business being involved in the war. Hell, never mind doing anything wrong--we're America. We can torture who we want when we want, invade who we want, when we want, and the rest of the world will cheer us on, like they are doing now. And..it will knock at least 30 minutes off the war, so heck yeah, let's continue running American tradition into the ground. Heck yeah, let's get on the same level as the terrorists so we can show that we are morally superior as well. Maybe cut off some heads! Surely, that will make the world more interested in becoming allied with our cause.
It amazes me that even the dimmest bulb on the shelf cannot see where this is headed when you look at the macro situation. But then, you will never see it on TV news, therefore most Americans cannot think about what they have not been told to think about.
