Because he tells the truth - and everyone knows you can't be a diplomat if you're going to do that. It's so ... so, unsophisticated. It just isn't nice in polite company - no matter how corrupt, or hate-filled.
WINGATE, N.C. (AP) -- United Nations Ambassador John Bolton catalogued the agency's problems Monday, saying Americans want to fix the U.N. or find an alternative to it.
"Being practical, Americans say that either we need to fix the institution or we'll turn to some other mechanism to solve international problems," he said in a speech to several hundred people as part of the Jesse Helms Lecture Series at Wingate University.
One issue that exemplifies the United Nations' problems is that it has become a place where terrorist nations serve on the human rights commission and where even denouncing terrorism is debated, Bolton said.
He noted that a recent session bogged down in discussion over whether national liberation movements should be allowed to engage in terrorism.
Also check Pundita for an outline on many of these cold war entities which impact your life, even if you don't have a clue what they are.
The state of American-led institutions such as the United Nations, World Bank, NATO; the European Union and OPEC; the international monetary system; the end of the European colonialist period -- these and many other situations converged and entwined with ones that led President Bush to declare a new "axis of evil."
All this entwining is not good news for the Type-A personalities and those who like to solve one problem before moving to another. There seems at this point to be no solution, just another unraveling of another skein that leads to another ball of yarn.

Jesse Helms lecture series, Wingate University? that'd be about his level....birds of a feather and all that

RE: "we need to fix the institution"
That depends on what you think the purpose of the UN is. It was originally concieved as a place where every nation would have a forum to discuss grievances and hopfully to avoid war via negotiations.
I think Bolton believes the purpose of the UN is to have a unified body of 'good' nations that pressures the 'bad' nations to behave.

Bolton may be the best politician we have seen in this Country in ages. That is why he keeps getting passed over and given jobs like the UN.

The UN is a socialist's dream...and a free man's nightmare.
Abolish it.
