RENO, Nev. (AP) - Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman has suggested that those who deface freeways with graffiti should have their thumbs cut off on television.
Goodman, appearing Wednesday on the ``Nevada Newsmakers'' television show, said, ``In the old days in France, they had beheading of people who commit heinous crimes.
``I'm saying maybe you put them on TV and cut off a thumb,'' the mayor added. ``That may be the right thing to do.''
Goodman also suggested that whippings or canings should be brought back for children who get into trouble.
``I also believe in a little bit of corporal punishment going back to the days of yore, where examples have to be shown,'' Goodman said.
Instances of public urination by males reportedly ceased completely immediately following the broadcast. ; )

Which Taliban group is he from anyway! I didn't know we were surrendering? ;-)

Bring back the old days...Just do a little tar and feathering in the town square at high noon each day for all the town to see. Sell tickets serve refreshments. :o) lol

Why not liberate Sadam from Iraqi imprisonment and make him mayor. He has all the right skills.

no, no, no, -what's next cutting off the finger of a child who steals a cookie from the cookie jar. people do stupid things for stupid reasons and often later regret it. Absolutely 100% behind public humiliation! Who will dare to start it. I can only hope.

How dare anyone stop a future of a budding artist! What is with this country protecting the accused? I agree cutting off ones body parts is not acceptable, and I doubt this mayor meant it as figurative.

I think his remarks were inappropriate, but still I think it is a problem. On the scale of important things to deal with, it is minor, except for the attitude of the kids who lack respect. I think to designate a building, make it a contest, give an art scholarship to the winner would make for a much better relationship with the younger generation.

The reason why kids are running wild and free today is that there is no "fear" factor. If they knew that something bad would happen to them if they did these things, you'd see them stop immediately!! Stop patronizing these juvenile delinquents!!

I like higher consequences balanced with greater rewards. Up the consequenses, but give the "real" budding artists a platform to showcase their skills, like K.Jeanne posted. If you can get the ones with real skills to get on the right side, give them some responsibility to regulate, and organize a program---man, you might just save a kid. Maybe have a graffetti (sp?) park. Let the kids white-wash it every quarter, and only leave one or two "choice" selections each season. And the scholarship program is an EXCELLENT IDEA!!!

most "graffiti" is vandalism or worse - tagging - not art

By the way, where is that dink with the hard-on for George Galloway?
"Iraq's ex-deputy prime minister Tariq Aziz has denied accusing George Galloway of profiting from the oil for food programme..."

I don't know squat about this Galloway guy but I do know that the previous accusations were based on FORGED documents... I don't care if it's the Klu Klux Klan, the Black Panthers, or this Galloway guy... something stinks when evidence of a crime is fabricated.

Yep, most graffiti is done by gang members marking their turf, letting people know where drugs are available and in a few cases, just letting their name appear in "lights." In Philadelphia it is a misdemeanor crime if property damage is under $500.00, above that is a felony.
These clowns cost tax payers in criminal investigations and court time and costs. It is ANYTHING but art. Punish them then turn around and give them an art scholarship? I don't think so. Punish them, let the accused get their act together, then let them work for that scholarship. That's what most college students have to do. No free ride.

RE: "Galloway is a graffiti artist?"
Yes, Galloway is a graffiti artist and likely a shoplifter... but officials who forge documents or fabricate evidence in criminal cases need to get their thunbs cut off.
Ok, I was off-topic.

ahhhhhhhhhhh so now we are talking the DeLay/Lewis matter, or was that the CBS/NBC poll stating Bush with the lowest approval rating to date? And while I agree with you on lies to convict someone, also know better than trust the MSN with vital information. We are dealing with a media that is anti-American to say the least. What I want to know is, what ever happened to the truth? Exaggeration sucks.

i say go graffitti screw oscar goodman how could you dare try and cut some ones thumb off. Why dont you set up parks for kids to go and express there self look at venice beach in california!
Graffitti will never end and its time that people understand that. Build the parks and most kids will want to go there instead of risking there lives to go out and hit other walls. But people must unederstand no matter what you do it will never end your only increases the amount of kids who want to do it. Also most graffitti now days insnt about gangsters its about a kid wanting to express his or hers self.
