I noticed the south in general did indeed give more than the north. LOL
Looks like another North and South thingy. Hope not. Probably has to do with what the "cause is"
Seems like northerners are selective about what they give to and for. LOL
Yes, the south are very "caring" and giving people. If I say so myself. :o)
Thanks for the post. :O)

Amazing post. I'd never heard this. Yet, don't the Red States have less money in aggregate than the Blues?

Wow, Jersey's near the bottom. Guess they didn't count giving the world 'The Sopranos'.

This survey is on reported contributions. Most Americans don't even deduct these on Income Tax. Unless your a cheap son a gun, looking for any deduction you can take. Donate a bag of sweat stained tee shirts to the slavation army, and you can get a 50.00 tax write off with each pile you donate. Ummmmmmmm sorry BillyBOB, I don't want your dirty underwear for tax purposes.

I was thrilled to see my home state being on the top-ten list! We deduct our giving---except for Salvation Army, and Goodwill donations.

We recieve a report at the end of the year as to our giving. Church, outreaches, ater-school tutoring, Big Brother's. It all comes down to about 15% of our income.

Maybe up north we are talking about a bag of sweat-stained t-shirts, but 'round here...we put muscle behind our giving. And it's a chunck large enough to take a tax break on!

everyone gives the same....in the blue states it is generally involuntary in the form of taxes

Not sure about the data.

They are using average adjusted gross income and average itemized charitable contribution.

What about folks that do not itemize or report?
Average adjusted gross income..what filing status (single, head of household, married jointly, etc)?

What is the average per capita?

How much of it is church? Giving to church to buy a new pew or feed the preacher is not charity.

Seems to me that most people who "give" do so out of the good of there own heart and not to become part of some political leaning statistic. However, the rest like to be sure to have their "generosity" documented for future reference, so they can be reminded time and time again how wonderful they are.

Also, it would be interesting to see how much TIME these people take to serve various charities. ANYONE with material wealth can donate material items... While that looks great on the surface, I'd rather spend time in a soup kitchen or personally handing out coats to the homeless.

I'd like to see the "Red" statistics for things such as this, especially in predominantly urban impoverished areas.....

New Hampshire is the reddest state in the Northeast. Alabama is great at giving charity, and taking it too. They get way more than their share of Federal taxes.
