The fact is while we mere mortals discuss and even argue the Iraq war every day - there are political battles fought mostly with leaked intelligence going on all the time behind the scenes. Pundita has a very informative post up on some of the recent comings, goings, and leaks so copious, they'll remind you of Ted Kennedy in an Irish tavern's men's room on a Saturday night.
Assuming he didn't wander into the ladies room by mistake. Yeah, right, like I'd buy that excuse from him. Check it out.
The leaks flow in all directions, but a big pipeline has been from MI6 to Mossad and vice versa and from there to various sinks in Washington. Until Australia was elevated in rank in September, only Britain was privy to the highest US intelligence-sharing ranking.
In other words, by September Bush knew that the cat was already out of the bag. So he brought generals George Casey and John Abizaid to Washington to openly discuss their plan to draw down US troops in Iraq.

"Dear Mr Cheney, if we want to keep US policy on track in the Middle East, it means cutting bait with Republicans whose stance on US foreign policy is directed by Europeans and Israelis who take orders from Russian billionaires, who are in up to their necks with the Russian mobs."
Pretty well says it in a nutshell. Things have been working along these lines since at least 1913, and even earlier. We have been useful puppets, whose usefulness has been over-extended, and is coming to an end unless the people of this country wake up. Fat chance.

RE: "So I venture only an Act of God can show Democrats that they're being used as pawns by foreigners whose main concern in life is to eject Vladimir Putin from power."
Yep - totally agree with this.

What 'staying the course' really means
http://www.atimes.com/
Far from bringing democracy to Iraq and defeating "Islamofascism", the 150,000 US troops there are acting as the Praetorian Guard for a real "Islamofascist" regime that is already in power. And if the US "stays the course" with its utterly paradoxical and self-defeating strategy, much of the rest of the Middle East is also likely to end up in the hands of theocratic extremists who rule by terror, torture, and armed might.
Shi'ite "Islamofascists" rule Iraq

The Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq, or SCIRI, and a parallel force associated with al-Dawa (The Islamic Call), a 45-year-old Shi'ite underground terrorist party... SCIRI and Dawa were based in Iran. SCIRI, in fact, was founded in 1982 by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and its paramilitary arm, the Badr Brigade, was trained and armed by Iran's Revolutionary Guards.
