No, it was cancelled.
God help us!
He's trying!
I'm not overly religious. But I like this attempt to interject values into the discussion of youth activitites - even if I do think in this case, it's futile. Still, it's good to see someone taking a stand. Read the whole thing and see if you agree.
Enough was enough, Hoagland said. So the principal of Kellenberg Memorial High School fired off a 2,000-word missive to parents at the start of the school year informing them that the Catholic school would no longer put on the spring prom.
"Each year it gets worse - becomes more exaggerated, more expensive, more emotionally traumatic," he added. "We are withdrawing from the battle and allowing the parents full responsibility. (Kellenberg) is willing to sponsor a prom, but not an orgy."
In his letter, Hoagland cited a litany of problems that he says have developed over the years. He began a dialogue on the future of the prom last spring after it was discovered that 46 Kellenberg seniors made a $10,000 down payment on a $20,000 rental in the Hamptons for a post-prom party. When school officials found out, they forced the students to cancel the deal; the kids got their money back and the prom went on as planned.
But Hoagland said some parents went ahead and rented a Hamptons house anyway.
Besides, Laine noted, the senior class still has a four-day trip to Disney World scheduled for April.
"We go to all the parks with our friends," he said just before hopping into his jet-black Infiniti and driving off to meet friends for an after-school bite to eat. "We fly down together and stay in the same hotel and so it's not like we're totally losing everything."

Just makes me feel warm and fuzzy all over......... When DID Catholic schools endorse the right to party it up in the Hamptons? That's even more disturbing....
Makes me happy that I live in an over priced, crime infested, integrated city full of illegals, anarchists and gays. At least we're too poor to partake in this particular type of banquet........ and too cynical to care what the religious 'elite' calls liberty........ or morality.

Makes you wonder who, and where the adults are....
Not that we didn't do similar stuff...but the difference is, that our parents would not only not have condoned it, we would probably have been living in the streets had they known about it.

I wondering who in their right mind would rent a home to 46 students! Think of the damage that could be done. In our area, it is common for students to rent beach homes, but they take a great risk. The police monitor the area and students may be forced to leave for any underage drinking thus losing their rental money and deposit. Most rental homes require someone over 25 yrs. of age to execute the rental agreement, leaving someone also liable for the behavior of anyone in the home. What is really interesting is who is taking on the responsibility of 46 students in the rental agreement. Anyone that would place themselves in that position must be really stupid!

It is not the job of the school to judge what goes on after the prom. Yes it is overdone and renting a hampton house is going overboard but it's not the school's job to police that. at most, they can limit what a person wears to the prom by saying it's too revealing or not appropriate but once the child leaves the prom, the school's responsibility ends so I don't know what they are complaining about.

you know dan, there is more of a story in this than you think. This school has been going down an interesting path for years. The "brothers" have been repeatedly asked by the Bishop of that diocese not to give out communion during the lunch hours and they have totally ignored him. They also, for at least 8 years have had an affiliation with a cult, the Bruderhofs. This disturbed many parents and kids were taken out of the school. There is a lot of stuff going on there, you should take a look. They are Marianists and they feel that it is their way or the highway and they are pretty arrogant about it from what I have heard. Remember dan, there are alwasy two sides to every story. I am a regular poster but I am not going to use my regular post name for fear of reprisal.
He is a link to one of the many Bruderhof sites, frightening cult,

Gee, once again dan, Cnn is reading this blog. They just did a story about this and it was not complimentary. Good thing you have decided to bring this out. According to CNN, the principal said that there was a mentality to lose one's virginity while parents are around to help. Boy that is certainly scary, particularly for a catholic institution. Isn't Catholicism in favor of girls not losing their virginity, isn't it a sin to have sex outside of marriagn? Boy, this is certainly getting more interesting isn't it?

Mercy, me! Shades of Aruba ! Moms and Dads, it's a Graduation from high school, not the winning of the Nobel prize. Give it a rest already. Are the kids not spoiled enough?

i go to kellenberg and let me tell you the full story is not being told "Do proms or dances increase test scores and help student learn academic subjects? No, such social activities do distract too many students from academic pursuits. " im quoting that from some one and the answer of course is no. look at kellenberg though we spend 6,750$ a year in tuition and what do they do with it? bulid 3 million dollar retreat houses, build 1 million dollar courtyards (2 to be exact), build a literal zoo peacocks dogs birds fish snakes everything. Now let me as you is this helping your academic success and angain the answer is no.I think yes prom has become overrated but not everyone is in on the booze drugs sex. its the people who did it before prom who will do it again and thats about it. its nothing new. prom is the next best thing to graduation so why take it away?

I'm really confused now. I hope this is a joke, right? I understand enrollment is 2,500 at this school. That's a lot of kids for a private school. According to the Bruderhof website the live-in community is for 400 people and there are 5 in NY...... So a lot of non-Bruderhof families attend, maybe even non-Catholics? I'm guessing.
How is this a cult?....... Is the Society of Friends a cult too? I'm not being facetious, am REally confused.
I read nothing objectionable to Jesus teachings on their website....... what is the seedy underbelly of this story - examine or Anne. If you object to the curriculum and philosophy, you don't need to send your kids there. And $6750 is cheap, cheap, cheap for private high school. Unless you're just warehousing your kids in 'any' religious institution to escape public school with no actual piety or conviction to back up your choices..... and this is the only school you could afford. I mean, their mindset is fully declared up front. That's the nature of private schools.
Please expand on your comments for those who aren't coming from and/or following your arguments. Why do you think they are frightening? Because they seem to be idealistic, just good people?
