I'm afraid this isn't a warm fuzzy post. Actually, it's rather disturbing and several images are very graphic. A reader sent in a link to a Live Journal site with images of several dogs which were said to have been shot while housed in a Middle school post Katrina.
I didn't know what to make of it, so I Googled and did find a supporting news story here.
But there's also another rather bizarre twist. If you go to the live journal page and scroll down to the fifth image, there's a sex toy sitting on the landing of the middle school. WTF? I'd like to see some amateur sleuth figure that one out. I sure can't.

Sick fucks in this world...

There is a $10,000 reward for the conviction of the persons that committed these crimes by the PASADO animal rescue agency. There is another school where dogs were shot, as well as the New Orlean's stadium. Both cats and dogs were shot there...

"were euthanized by their owners, or shot by military personnel,"
For some odd reason, I see another version of the "looting vs finding food" brewing here.

WHOA!!! I think you need to put a WARNING: GRAPHIC PHOTOS on this weblog bc that was way too much for me! Those poor dogs. . . and their poor owners. I hope they never come across these pictures to find out what happened to their pets! That's just HORRIFIC!

I survived Katrina.

I stayed in my home a few miles from the Central Business District of New Orleans throughout Katrina and Rita. I am still here, but the city is gone.
I hear many stories about who did what, when, where, why and how...but it seems no one realizes that none of the past matters.
The city is gone. The suburbs around the city are gone. The suburbs around the suburbs are gone. Entire communities have been reduced to rubble.
There is still no water, electricity, natural gas, telephone service, or gasoline in over half of Orleans Paish (county) and 100% of St. Bernard and Plaquemines Parishes. (save for a few essential buildings).
Parishes affected so severely can not pay for essential employees such as those on police and fire departments much less for such nice things like garbage pick-up.
It is being estimated that 80% of the homes in the region are uninhabitable and will be condemned. We are expected to lose a quarter of a million residents, more than half of the population.
You may have seen some pictures of the damage left behind after Katrina and Rita but you can not grasp the enormity of the destruction until you see it. Imagine if you will, miles and miles of homes without walls, roofs, windows, cars tossed all over, boats piled on top of each other, slabs where businesses used to be, remnants of fires, dead animals, the stench of rot, ankle deep black, bacteria and virus laden goo covers the ground, the trees are toppled or brown, there is a layer of grayish/tanish dirt coloring every car, building, street, tree, lawn and trashpile.
The lakefront restaurants are gone. The yacht clubs are rubble. The boat houses are already condemned.
The airport is dying. Last report was 24 flights per day.
Public schools will not open until next school year in 3 Parishes.
Businesses are gone, from the dry cleaners to the power company. Families are gone. The football team is gone.
Hundreds of thousands of people lost both home and job. With that went health-care coverage, seniority and retirement.
Hospitals are being demolished as will entire neighborhoods soon.
Thousands of pets are separated from their owners with little chance of being reunited depsite the best efforts of volunteers from around the world.
Nearly 1,000 people died. Each one had a family and friends. 10,000 tragedies.
We have lost our spirit, our joy, our lives as we knew them, our friends, family and loved ones have re-located, familiar faces and places are gone. The future is uncertain, our leaders inept and our sadness is great.
We hear the pontifications of our politicians and know that they can not deliver. We know that they will squander tax payer money with slick deals and back door agreements. We do not trust them but, what can we do? Not elect them NEXT time? Great, but that doesn't get drinkable water service to neighborhoods right now and it won't help turn on the electricty.
We are all in a state of shock and depression. We could use a little kindness, a little gentleness, a little understanding and a little love.
By the way, we have the finest of the finest in our military. You would have been impressed and oh so proud.
Just rambling thoughts.
