Miers was among a group of lawyers from the Texas bar and elsewhere who had argued that the ABA should have a neutral stance on abortion.

I would not count on the ABA, for the most part, they are very liberal in their thinking. As for Ms. Miers, I have to wait until I have more information on her. I am very pro-life, and that issue is very important to me. Especially dealing with the partial birth abortion issue.

One step forward, two steps back. I guess that's called the Busch sidestep.

Out here in the West, we set aside a Sunday in October to stand out on the highway in the hot sun for an afternoon in silent protest of the taking of innocent lives through abortion. That was yesterday. I stand out there every year, hoping against hope that sometime soon, the laws that allow murder of the innocents will be overturned.

thanks. We just had a convention here in PA, I belong to a group called "Silent no More". The guest speaker this year was the actress Jennifer o'Neill who spoke of the horrors she endured after her abortion. The womans liberation movement has fooled a lot of women into thinking abortion is the answer. I realize there are many other issues a justice faces, but to me, this is most important.

Dan, Could I possibly convince you to run for president? You have such a straight forward take on things, and you always seem to look at things from an unbiased and fair position. What a rare blogger you are, indeed! Thank you for this forum, and please consider running for public office somewhere, somehow. I have all but lost faith in our government and in politics. You would be such a breath of fresh air for America!

allison, if dan ran for public office, sadly the system would swollow
him up and ultimately he would become "one of them"...that is why it is better that he remain a true commentator on the system...he is highly effective right where he is...probably wouldn't have much say were he in Chuckie's position. As the day goes on, it is interesting to watch them all panic...my it occurred to me early on that she has pulled a "cheney"...really no wonder there was such a short list for the prez...the master plan was to make sure that she was the nominee...i guess if she pulled this off...we should watch her very carefully.

Seems like everyone is so afraid about the abortion issue.
Who knows how she or Roberts feels about abortion but, we will see.

The democrats seem to think it is perfectly fine for someone to go out and get pregnant and have an abortion. Men as well as women can use all sorts of protection so why don't they ? People should be held responsible for their actions. Abortion for the hell of it is wrong. Their are some exceptions that do indeed warrant an abortion such as rape and incest and medical problems that would result in the death of the mother. But...for someone to go and get pregnant and then have an abortion is flat wrong. Thats killing a baby no natter how you look at it.
A women and a man that engages in sex knowing that the women may get pregnant should be made to take responsibility for their actions. JMO.
Their is always adoption. Their are many couples out their that would love to adopt these unwanted children.
The republicans feel that one should take responsiblity for their actions and these children should not be killed because of two peoples stupidity and selfishness. They too believe that in some instances abortion should be allowed.
So, tell me what is the big deal ?

Do you really think it is right for someone to go out and have their fun and have the attitude that if they get pregnant they will just have an abortion ? NOT !! RESPONSIBILTY FOR YOUR ACTIONS !

Who is right and who is wrong ?

----------------------------------------------

Who gets to decide if the abortion is a righteous one or not? Does a woman who was raped and was afraid to press charges have to go before a judge and possibly be raped mentally all over again?

I am against abortion too, but pro-choice, because I dont think the Government belongs in my body, my gyno is enough thank you.

Aunt Em, I do not believe they government belongs there either. What bothers me is Roe v. Wade first off was based on a lie. Second, abortion was not ment as it stands today, it was never intended as abortion on demand. And partial birth abortion is what really freaks me out. TO pull a baby out 3/4 of the way, stab it in the back of the neck with a pair of sizzors and suck its brains out is simply murder at that point.

Cindi, abortion on demand HAS to be legal for the women who really need it. I agree that women who use birth control are morally corrupt and they will have to answer for what they have done.

And you obviously have read too much propoganda about partial birth abortions. #1, unless there is a serious risk to the mother and/or the baby's health, then they are 100% illegal and a doctor would never perform one.

Abortions after the second trimester ARE illegal unless something is REALLY messed up. For the high percentage of these abortions the baby is hydrocephalic, which means they couldnt pass through the birth canal in a regular way. So the scissor thing it to let all the fluid (not brain, there is no brain) out. This is so the mother doesnt have to go through a high risk C-section that could effect not only her fertility, but her life. They would in these cases have to do a CLASSICAL c-section, which puts a woman at risk of a ruptured uterus in her next pregnancy. Which can cause death.

I had a ruptured uterus, and I cant have children now. Not because of that, but because my uterus wasnt elastic enough.

Dont paint with such a wide brush, YES there are women who abuse abortion, but it still doesnt belong in a court room.

Roe vs Wade must be clarified...people must be educated...if birth control is freely available, and the education component is added then using abortion as a means of birth control could be greatly diminished.
We are spending so much time debating this issue that we are not getting
to the very core of the problem. All the while while we are stuck on
our opinions many women are using abortion as birth control...we are
failing to educate. if we educate then i think the instances of abortion
as birth control will automatically diminish. Sadly, in some places i
think that that education must begin in the fifth grade with full
permission of the parents.
While watching Katrina it occurred to me that these very poor people had no options...too poor to leave...and, when they finally did...they don't want to come back....why ...because they have maanged to escape the cycle of poverty and they have been able to get their dignity back....
As a nation we have to begin thinking out of the box again, and we should not stay between the lines...if there is poverty in Louisiana and jobs in Texas then we should move the people from louisiana to texas...I guess God decided to do that for us.
Every day I see more and more things that frighten me about this country...IMO we are seriously in danger of creating our own demise both socially and economically...the time to act is now....
The President had a majority in the congress, he had all the cards, he caved in to the democrats..why...what do they have on him...how many more qualified women did he pass over...this still doesn't make sense...

And you obviously have read too much propoganda about partial birth abortions. #1, unless there is a serious risk to the mother and/or the baby's health, then they are 100% illegal and a doctor would never perform one.

read the statistics, go to a local hospital and ask questions. propoganda my ass.

Cindi, abortion on demand HAS to be legal for the women who really need it.

All things considered in this day and age, there is almost no reason to need an abortion. MOST are given to white females between the age of 22 and 27, no medical need required today to have an abortion. It is simply a matter of convience.

I still reserve my opinion on the presidents choice, i just have not read enought to know what she is about. The biggest scam ever passed onto women, was the womens liberation movement. It did more harm than good. I agree more time should be spent on educating young women on their choices and decisions. I won't go into the poor people discussion again, I attended school with the poor, blacks included, they had every educational chance and the same chance at higher education that I did. They turned it down, and part of that blame belongs with their parents, caretakers, not on my shoulders. I received the same amount of tax money towards my education as they did.

Dan, Could I possibly convince you to run for president?

lol Allison, sure, I'd run - but most likely someone would cath me and beat the crap out of me. Along with believing you have to start campaigning at 3 years old to get elected, I suspect many a night in college spent lobbying bartenders to "please just stay open until three" would disqualfy me.

However, it would be fun to have a pulpit like that from which to tick so many people off at once.

Cathy, and even though this is an issue for me, it's not the only one. I still hold my judgment, until I learn more about her. Although based on what I have read so far, there is not much to tell. And maybe that is what the administration is counting on.

Cindi, it would be illegal for them to perform them if there werent those risks. It IS propoganda, no doctor would risk his license like that.

THINK woman.

that is pure bullshit, walk into any planed parenthood clinic and you can get an abortion, no quetions asked.

Cindi, you have been fed BS, and you believe it. No doctor is going to risk their license over a late term abortion, bottom line.

I am not going to convince you, because you have been fed too many pictures of dead babies (which by the way are dead babies not aborted fetuses.)

So live in your world where you think women shouldnt have rights. Go for it. I feel sorry for you, a lack of an education is a sad thing all around. Like another poster said, its probably the reason abortion rates are so high, not withstanding the selfish women who do it because its easier.

To Cindi in PA, who wrote, "I would not count on the ABA, for the most part, they are very liberal in their thinking."

The ABA? Liberal? You're kidding, right?

Reid told Cheney to pick Miers; Relished fact she was never a judge
John Byrne

Democratic Senate Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) urged President Bush to pick White House counsel Harriet Miers as his nominee to the Supreme Court, RAW STORY can confirm.

In a conference call held with liberal bloggers last week, Reid declared that he had told Vice President Dick Cheney and White House Chief of Staff Andy Card that Miers was a good choice for the Court.

"I said, 'I think that rather than looking at the people your lawyer’s recommending, pick her," the senator remarked. "The reason I like her is that she’s the first woman to be president of the very, very large Texas bar association, she was a partner in a law firm, she’s actually tried cases, she was a trial lawyer, and she’s had experience here. I could accept that. And if that fits into the cronyism argument, I will include everybody as a crony, but not her, when I make my case."

Dan-
It takes quite some persuasion to talk a bartender into staying open late. I know... I've tried!

Look what campaigning at 3 did for Al Gore!

If you ever decide to run for any office and I am able to vote in that election, you can count on my vote. Keep up the good work, and many thanks to your voice of reason and sanity!
-Allison
