We live here in South Alabama right on the Mississippi line and my Dad picks up a New Orleans Radio station. He said on the Sunday before Katrina hit, a woman called the radio station and said she had went to visit her Mother in a nursing home in New Orleans and there was only one employee there! She said she called her daughter to come and help her feed them. She said she called 911 and it was busy so she didn't know who else to call. The radio station said they would take care of it. I wonder if this is the same nursing home?
My husband is a physical therapist at a nursing home here and he is just appalled at this. He said that they received 16 residents from the VA nursing home in Biloxi. He said they had to ride it out on the 3rd floor of the nursing home and have no possessions left to their name. They had to go to Walmart and buy them new stuff. What a shame.

Why do you Americans give your elderlies, grand parents and parents, away for strangers to take care of?
When they get old, that's the time in life they want to be with family. They earned the right to be with family, and younger generation can be a little less "self-endulgent" and should make an effort and life ajustment to keep the elderlies at home.... WHERE THEY BELONG! (unless its a case that requires clinical help).
Take your parents and grand-parents home, people! This is inexcusable!

many parents/grand parents want to be left alone, to be cared for in private assistant care facilities, when others are sent home to be with the family in there last days, its personal preference

Isanah would be a good source to discuss this topic.
Like to add, many people in nursing homes/assisted living facilities are award to the state because there is no one else to care for them.
