Update: There are conflicting reports on this incident, some reports suggest the police shot five men attacking the contractors, other reports claim the contractors themselves were shot. I've linked both stories at the source.
Apparently amid the confusion of trying to gain control of the situation in New Orleans, it is now being reported that at least five scumbags civilian contractors were shot by police while on their way to repair a canal.
Police shot eight people carrying guns on a New Orleans bridge, killing five or six, a deputy chief said.
A spokesman for the Army Corps of Engineers said the victims were contractors on their way to repair a canal. The contractors were walking across a bridge on their way to launch barges into Lake Pontchartrain to fix the 17th Street Canal, said John Hall, a spokesman for the Corps.
Other Report
They were on their way to launch barges into Lake Pontchartrain to help plug the breech in the 17th Street Canal, Hall said.
None of the contractors was killed, Hall said.

Dan, double check your resources. Police killed gunmen that shot contractors........

Get with it Dan
Report: Police shoot gunmen
Police shot and killed at least five people Sunday after gunmen opened fire on contractors crossing a bridge to make levee repairs, The Associated Press reported.
Deputy Police Chief W.J. Riley told AP that police shot at eight people who had guns, killing five or six.
The Army Corps of Engineers told AP that 14 contractors escorted by police were fired upon while crossing the Danziger Bridge, which spans a canal connecting Lake Pontchartrain and the Mississippi River.
Corps spokesman John Hall told AP the contractors were on their way to launch barges into Lake Pontchartrain to help fix a breech in the 17th Street Canal.
Initial AP reports had wrongly indicated that the contractors themselves were shot by police; no other details were immediately available.

The story is wobbly right now, but the latest is that the New Orleans police shot gunmen who fired on the contractors. No contractors shot.

But you just never know until you actually hear from someone there when it happened.

There should be laws against false reporting. Who cares who has the story first, as long as its a true story.
Im tired of these BS stories that are half truth half Tall Tale.
Unless it is the absolute truth...don't report it, period.

let us please be careful. this is tragic enough without the rumors.

I can neither confirm, nor deny these reports.
Those criticizing need go back and read Dan's exact words.
Better yet, I'll repost for you... :)

Any, and all, thorough journalist will specifically state "conflicting reports" in the early stages of a story.
Lay off! There was no accusation made, and clearly stated as such.

Army Corp. of engineers walking across the bridge area to begin assessment when they were fired upon not by police but by snipers. The police returned fire at the snipers but estimated delay from this crew supervisor was up to 8 hours of time and now they would be forced to work into the dark hours.

Dan,
That was not directed at you in any way.
More towards the people that are actual witnesses that are telling MSM. Tell what you really saw, not what will sell.

Meanwhile, a civilian rescue helicopter crashed Sunday at the same bridge the shootings occurred at. The crew escaped with minor injuries ... but is safe, according to Mark Smith of the state office of emergency preparedness.

Thank God they are returning fire...I wish they had done so from the onset. Of course, they were waiting for FEMA to come in and do that for them, too...geez

A friend sent this. Interesting reading from somebody (I think with FEMA)
that went to help out the victims. More proof of "welfare state" mentalities. The guy who wrote this is obviously not a rocket scientist either, but at least he was trying to help.
See what he got for his efforts.

This was in my hometown paper...note the part about "4th generation people who do not work...."

I am going to make sure my donations go to the victims in Mississippi and Alabama who do work, and who deserve my help, or I am giving my money to the organizations that are providing help for the displaced pets. The bottom-feeders can continue to get their help from the government!!
Posted by: Oh Please | Monday, September 05, 2005 at 03:45 AM
It is sad to say but probably over 90% of the ones who chose to stay in N.O. were bottom feeders who more than likely have never worked a day in their life. They are been conditioned through the years to expect the government to provide for every need they have. They are encouraged to work the system by having as many kids as they can because every kid will bring a raise in monthly benefits and this scenario has been going on for the last 40 years.
The ones who could have left should have left making it far less of a challenge to rescue the ones who truly could not leave. In effect the people themselves along with an incompetent elected mayor have brought about the problems that they have been facing. It is simply the nature of the welfare system for those recipients to sit and wait for someone else to do what they should have done themselves.THEY SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN THE HELL OUT OF NEW ORLEANS.
I dont want to hear that they could not get out or that they had no place to go,hell they sure as hell were able to destroy the Superdome and the Convention Center along with the rest of the city.Loot everything in sight, rape and murder their own people.Hell yes if they were able to do all of this in the aftermath then they sure as hell could have gotten out when the getting out was good.
But no they only say they had nowhere to go which is what they have now and that is nowhere to go.Now they will sit in shelters and bitch and complain about how no one is doing this or no one is doing that and it will never dawn on any of them that perhaps the only place they need to look for help is in a mirror.
In the coming days and weeks they will be housed and fed and provided for by the very people who they have critcized for not getting them out sooner. While they are receiving all of this help pro bono they will ask where their monthly check and other freebies are since they are entitled to all of the freebies that make up their way of life. They will be on TV screens on the news saying "I have not gotten MY check, why are they not giving us our checks" as if they have earned a damn check but somehow feel entitled to a check to go along with the freebies they are now receiving.
A horrible scene is unfolding in shelters everywhere where grown able bodied men are lounging around on cots playing cards while volunteers are moving supplies in and distributing them to these worthless men who will not even help themselves. These same men should be forced to be the first ones to go back to N.O. nad start the clean up,but they wont be forced to do that as it has been reported that $62 million has been allocated to hire the refugees to go back in and clean up their own city.WHAT pay them to clean up their own city while they continue to already be provided for????BULLSHIT no work,no eat and if they dont want to work for the keep they are now receiving let them starve...

Wow,some interesting reading here. I enjoyed reading the links as well. I certainly do feel real bad for the many good people who have lost there homes and livleyhoods to this disaster.I also hope the spirit of giving and volunteering this country is so well known for is not lost because of the greediness and foulplay of the crud of the world. JMHO

Let's look at the simple facts. Regardless of who's telling the story we have facts that do not change. Facts reflect truth not opinion. The facts are 5 policemen shot civilians. 0 civilians shot police. Who's the violent ones here? It's simple mathematics people. I'm telling you, if you can't figure this one out, ya probably can't tie your shoe, much less count out proper change.

I am from Minnesota, and I'm wondering what motives are given for snipers shooting at contractors repairing New Orleans. No one seems to be reporting this. Why are these contractors referred to as "scumbags" in your lead article? Please help us understand this.
