via Drudge from the AP - The possible estimation of the number of dead I heard informally today from someone connected with the military was absolutely frightening. It was suggested that in a worst case scenarion we oculd ultimately be talking about numbers in the tens of thousands ad that America wouldn't be ready for that. Hell, I'm not ready for that. I'd rather reflect back on this post for now.
And please remember the much needed fund raising going on.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Thousands more bedraggled refugees were bused and airlifted to salvation Saturday, leaving the heart of New Orleans to the dead and dying, the elderly and frail stranded too many days without food, water or medical care.
No one knows how many were killed by Hurricane Katrina's floods and how many more succumbed waiting to be rescued. But the bodies are everywhere: hidden in attics, floating among the ruined city, crumpled on wheelchairs, abandoned on highways. And the dying goes on - at the convention center and an airport triage center, where bodies were kept in a refrigerated truck.

OMG...I do not think America will be ready for that if it turns out that way. God I hope not.

I'm overwhelmed by this tragedy. I agree with you, angel, that the Earth is being judged. We need to be awake, and help wake up those who are sleeping. Who can stand in the Day of the Lord: Babylon (Iraq) and Jerusalem are in play; Typhoons, hurricanes, tsunamis; earthquakes, famines, whirlwinds, plagues; man's inhumanity against man, man's destruction of this planet, man's subjugation and exploitation of women, amorality, anti-Christ superstar ala Hollywood, Allah's Holy War, Helter Skelter and she's coming down fast. Yes she is.

Great line, Clint. I think we do need to give some credit to the great job the National Guard, Coast Guard, Red Cross, City of Houston, and others have done in the last day or two. Wow, they have accomplished some things that seemed impossible. I didn't think it was possible.

40,000 crackheads without a government paid fix. That's what you got. Face it. No cocaine! All those poor people! Pick yourselves up and make a difference! They never worked a day in their lives! It's like a San Juan suburb with a few feet of water. Here, here is everything for free, now go waste it all!

European news shows have shown family members going into New Orleans by boat to find and rescue missing relatives. Many old and disabled people are still in their houses in the flooded areas, without drinking water, food or medication.
Many heavily armed police officers were shown patrolling in boats, but no search efforts were being undertaken at all(!!). The family that was shown did not find their missing aunt, but were able to rescue a friend of hers and an exhausted man who floated by holding on to a tire. Hundreds of abandoned people were seen under bridges, on flyovers, on the steps of large buildings - there still were people everywhere.
The only reason given why there were no search and rescue efforts is that it was 'too dangerous'.
WHAT KIND OF GOVERNMENT IS LEAVING ITS PEOPLE TO DIE LIKE THAT??

you know, the first day I said it was going to be tens of thousand and I was berated by everyone on the blogs...this was totally mishandled.
our family, weather nuts, had been watching that hurricane for days. As soon as it came into the gulf my husband paniced. (this is a man who is cam as hell, sometimes way too calm) we go to the plymouth state tropical weather center cause it has everything and a discussion. After reading everything, the hubby came out of his office white...he said to me OMG this could hit Nawlins dead on and if it does it will be a disaster. Be3fore the hurricane we tried reaching people in New Orleans to tell them to get out. We clearly remember the mayor coming on at like eleven in the morning. I remember when he changed his mind about evacuating the hospitals. I also remember when Bush wa begging everyone to get out.
I am so sorry for what these people have had to go through and i pray those who didn't make it rest in peace.
That said, As a nation, we have got to learn how to deal with a disaster. If it looks ot me an american citizen that we are easy pickens what does it look like to those who wish our country harm?
The best weather website for understanding really what is going on is:
http://vortex.plymouth.edu/tropical.html
This morning I was reminded that the hurricane season is far from over and we are barreling through the alphabet like never before....

A real life, bureaucratic Tower of Babel scenario.
***********************************
Policeman: “Sir, a storm is going to hit! You need to leave your home immediately for your own safety.”
Homeowner: “It ain’t gonna hit? Good. I was afraid of looters!”
***********************************
Mayor: “It is a true catastrophe. We need help NOW!”
FEMA: “He says it’s all good for now. Where’s my beer? Will I still have a job after this? Really? A hurricane? Where…?”
***********************************
City employee on broadcasts: “Everyone move to the Superdome for your safety. We will provide assistance there!”
Victim: “Will we get any food here at the dome?”
City employee at superdome: “Sorry, we can’t help you. We’re packed. I hear San Antonio, Texas is lovely this time of year…”
***********************************
Black, Caucasian, Hispanic, Asian officers, firefighters and other land based civil units: “We need more men. We’re being shot at. We’re dying out here. We’re doing what we can”
Black Caucus: “And since no one is doing anything for us, the person to blame is…”
***********************************
Military officer: “Sir, we’ve come to assist you!”
“Survivor”: *bang, bang*
***********************************
Victim at the Superdome: “At least we have somewhere, a place to be out of the weather. We have our lives.”
Another “victim” at the Superdome: *rape, murder, steal* Where’s my fix, man? I want my money now!
***********************************
Reporter: “The government has finally sent in a military convoy to provide water and MREs to victims at the dome.”
“Survivor” to military envoy: *bang, bang*
Kayne West: “They’ve got permission to shoot US!”
***********************************
And finally:
FEMA: “A hurricane?! No Sh**?! I didn’t know!”
Bush: “I didn’t know ‘canes’ moved so fast…”
Multitude of agencies, victims and two years of pre-emptive planning: “ARRRRRGGGHHHHHH”

Dan, as of last night, all of the people that were alive and waiting to be rescued at both the Convention Center and the Superdome have finally been evacuated out of New Orleans--but that has NOT ended rescue efforts.
Contrary to the "rumor mill", it is simply NOT TRUE that they are just leaving the rest there to die. They are STILL, at this VERY MOMENT, rescuing residents from attics and rooftops of houses. We are having 24 hour a day tv coverage here, and those rescues are being shown as I type this.
There are also plans being made to blow the levee below NO in an attempt to release the flood waters. If it works, a door-to-door search of EACH and EVERY house will be made to check for additional survivors and to remove the dead.
Yes, it has been a week, and yes, few will be found still living, but I just wanted your readers to know that the rescue efforts are NOT being abandoned.
It is very upsetting to have waken up this morning to such rumors, along with some others being spread on national tv and radio by one very loud-mouthed SH&^ STIRRER, who, IMO, is just trying to cause more problems when there is already enough to contend with.
Posted by: Kathleen | Sunday, September 04, 2005 at 12:23 PM
I bet the Chinese and Russians and "terrorists" are just loving this. They see how pathetic the response has been. Everybody wants to blame somebody...when it just gets down to the bottom line guy in the street. If you were stupid enough to stay (not counting those physically unable) don't whine. As for the government's response. The welfare state is pitifully endowed to carry on "welfare."
What is scary is that people want to "blame" someone specific. Unfortunately (or fortunately) you cannot blame the president, governor or mayor alone. The city has been warned for years that this would happen in the event of a direct hit. The predecessors to these current politicos are just as much to blame...but more importantly the people themselves could have demanded the use of tax dollars going to those who will not work--to stabalize the city for those that would. Besides...it would have provided jobs for some willing to work. In fact, they could have made the able welfare recipients actually do some work for their "free" stuff. Nah...let's just keep on down the road we're going. China and Russia sure love it.

I guess that many just don't realize the destruction of hurricanes whether it be from "memory loss" (time), ignorance or just plain disbelief in "authority". I have sat through several that were not even Cat 4 and it is the most frightening thing you will ever experience. We just kept praying for the wind to stop. The worst is when it hits at night. It is the unseen. I remember cutting on every outside light just to make myself feel better. Once daylight comes it is better but still awful.
These storms are nasty! And I am not referring to "mean"-although they are. They carry so many germs in them. That is one of the reasons why Clorox is on everyone's hurricane prepardness list-that and having it to add to water for purification. Everything feels so grimy afterwards and many end up with respiratory illnesses. I can't figure out why anyone wants to ever willingly sit through one. The eye of Katrina passed a couple hundred miles to the west of us and we are all sniffling and sneezing now.
I hope that all learn from this experience in more ways than one. Not only the seriousness of these storms and how you must run for your life, but that we all need to live our life for the better. Sadly, I have that part mentioned much these past few days.
Peace to all~

Well, after watching CNN.FOX and MSNBC I see the black population is saying the slow response is not due to poor leadership and mismanagement but is due
to racism!
Well, That is hogwash!
I don't see how anyone could sleep good at night knowing they are below the lake level and having to depend on the levys.
They knew it was coming sooner or later. The smart ones left. Most of the people who stayed had a choice, however some did not. The ones who did not have a choice are the ones I feel sorry for the most. You can not depend on government to take care of you. That's your job. Be prepaired. Especially if you choose to live in a hazardous place!
They should be glad there was a response. Where would they be if there were none?
It is truly a tradgy!
The best thing that could be done now is burn the whole place down after the water is pumped out. That would get rid of all the disease, polution and toxic chemicals that infested the water. That would be the quickest way to sanitize every thing.
Then fill in the low areas, compact it and rebuild the city above the water.

A slimy cast of water
Lies testiment unto death
Of once a careless city
Where theme was not to rest.
Floating upon these waters
Are sin and shame; an end
Of once a mighty party
Where no one will now attend.
What mankind is now seeing
Is a taste of hell on earth.
The quakes you are now feeling
Is the world now giving birth.
Be quick and find a way to Him
Who holds his hand to you.
He who offers safety
Is calling out to you
Be sure to know, as it is said
The end of sin is death
God when angered by mockery
Will show up with his wrath.

Many of these people still refuse to leave. I guess they will have to arrest them and get them out of there. These people are unbelieveable. What the hell is wrong with them. Guess they are out of crack now.
Update about the two dogs that were left on the roof of the hospital I posted about. Article below.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/worldlatest/story/0,1280,-5254657,00.html
I hope I can help them. I just got off the phone with Valaire here in Atlanta at the Hospital with her husband at EMORY. She said that if her dogs were still alive they have been rescued. She will be talking to them today later to see if hers are there. They have our number and we are going to go and get them if hers are there at the shelter. We just do not know right now. I hope they are.SHE IS SUPOSE TO CALL THEM BACK TODAY. As for these two people they were form Buffalo and had just moved to Slidell in July. They do not know about their home there. They will be going back to Buffalo. We offered a room in our home for her to stay while he is in the hospital. Angel flight will eventually fly him back AS HE IS ABLE AS HE IS STILL RECOVERING FROM A TRANSPLANT OPERATION. Please anyone that can help just one person or one family do what you can. You cannot help everyone so pick up on one story and help them. Every little bits helps. Do something and shut you complaining and bashing andfinger pointng up.

Point of interest that I learned today:
http://littlegreenfootballs.com/weblog/?entry=17361&only
Louisiana did not reach out to a multi-state mutual aid compact for assistance until Wednesday, three state and federal officials said. As of Saturday, Blanco still had not declared a state of emergency, the senior Bush official said.
>> as an FYI, while the hurricane is offshore and coming in, Governor Bush of Florida has declared a state of emergency for the impending impact the hurricane will have.<<< (read: before it hits)
............................................
Behind the scenes, a power struggle emerged, as federal officials tried to wrest authority from Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco (D). Shortly before midnight Friday, the Bush administration sent her a proposed legal memorandum asking her to request a federal takeover of the evacuation of New Orleans, a source within the state’s emergency operations center said Saturday.
The administration sought unified control over all local police and state National Guard units reporting to the governor. Louisiana officials rejected the request after talks throughout the night, concerned that such a move would be comparable to a federal declaration of martial law. Some officials in the state suspected a political motive behind the request. “Quite frankly, if they’d been able to pull off taking it away from the locals, they then could have blamed everything on the locals,” said the source, who does not have the authority to speak publicly.

The buffoon Bush selected to head up Homeland Security stated that there was never any warning that something this catastrophic could happen in New Orleans if a hurricane struck that area.
The fact is that for many years the Army Corps of Engineers and scientists from all over had warned of this PRECISE scenario occurring. But Bush & Co., Inc. ( a subsidiary of Halliburton) cut funding to repair the levee system in order to fund its war for oil in Iraq.
This administration has failed in a collosal way to perform the first function of government...to protect its citizens.
And please don't respond that the government is protecting us by fighting in Iraq. The Iraqi people have NEVER done anything whatsoever to harm us.They were not the 9/11 terrorists by Cheney and Rumsfeld's own admission.

This explains the whole deal. I knew that the response was atypical. Now we see what happened. The Feds, seeking more dictatorial control just sat by and watched it all, hoping the governor would give up the rights of the state and the people. Hats off the them (N.O. officials) then. Another move towards fascism thwarted. Whether by accident, or on purpose, at least the governor made the right decision here. Too bad the feds let all those people die just for another power move. Patriot act, fatherland security, FEMA, more and more we are trying to look like Germany 1933. Wake up folks you have criminals in your midst.
Too bad the public school system has been so successful. Else people would know and recognize what is going on.

I have read some of your comments and I don't think now is the time to place blame. Prior to the actual strike of Katrina, the Mayor of New Orleans knew the plight of the poor and could have taken steps to evacuate them, he didn't. Instead, he sent them to a shelter that wasn't set up nor was is prepared for the onslaught of thousands. Then, he had the nerve to go on radio and blame eveyone else. Even Harry Connick, Jr. claimed that he, himself, should run for mayor after this fiasco; and he's a native and current resident of New Orleans.
Now is when we all have to get off our hind ends and do something to help all of these displaced people. I know a lot of them need clothing. I'm in Birmingham and we have opened up several shelters and are continuing to open more. I went out yesterday to get some things that they had requested and I ran into complete strangers who were doing the same thing. Basic toiletries are a luxury to them.
I am just so sick of the media wanting to find blame. We, as a nation, can sort that out over time, but for now, we just need to focus on getting aid to those who have lost everything.

Close the door to that world of misery and let those whom God has appointed to be there. The rest of us will know what we should do. It is good to feel badly for people and know if you are asked to do something, you will. It is not a time to use your energies to fight, blame or be otherwise a contributing factor to the choas that is happening. There are more channels on tv to watch and your families need comforting and some happiness in order to give them strength to deal with the coming days. When the smoke clears, you will have a more clear picture of where this is going and what you can do from where you are. Save your strength to live and have as normal a life as you can. Be ready with a kind word for each other for we all need it. Know that it is all being taken care of and watched over. Everything is not as bad as it seems, nor as it used to be, but that can be a plus for those that are not so emotionally involved that we are unable to help others. Have faith in our leaders. Leave them alone and know that all leaders would not be appointed in their positions were it not God's will. Relax all you can. You will need your strength. Put your minds on something not related to these horrible times, but make sure it is something right and good. blue

All a lot of people have is hope. Are you trying to destroy that along with your agenda to "divide and conquor." Know this: "Let no man put asunder what God has joined together." When Terri Schiavo was being taken off the feeding tube in Florida, Bush flew back to DC in the middle of the night to sign a bill stopping the euthanasia from taking place. Yet, when thousands upon thousands of poor and black Americans are drowning, hungry, and/or dying, he's literally in San Diego, California at a fund-raiser Tuesday and then back to his ranch in Texas to spend the night. We need never question this man and his Administration's priorities again.
That said, I do believe that the many millions of good-hearted Americans will help one another and do what we need to do despite the horrendous failure of a response.
Posted by: KM | Sunday, September 04, 2005 at 04:40 PM
The people are wearing gloves because of the illnesses that were reported. They found one case of TB in New Orleans and the medical personnel stated that several evacuees have ful blown aids.
I am sure they are just trying to prevent any Outbreaks. Now, that would suck!

I don't think we should worry about what any other country has to say. First of all I don't see any country besides Venzuela offering any help. The united states may have its issues but we have do not turn our backs on any humans no matter what the past is. I think in times like this rather than everyone trying to blame someone our energy would be much better spent doing something to help. The truth is that it is anyones fault, not the federal government or the victims. This was not wanted or intended by anyone.

I've been wondering for some days now where tens of thousands of New Orleans' dead will be buried. Surely not there, below sea level, even though above-ground burials ought to be. Yet it's their home, their last home. A memorial hall of some kind, a place for all to call their final home.

Really, it would be better for you not to drink and post at the same time, you seem to be very mixed up and incoherent.
Everyone from New Orleans has a personal story--and they are all different, and...they are based upon that particular person's perspective. It is not a good idea to associate "groupthink" to this and think that all have had the same experiences and will share the same opinions. Totally different people will give totally different stories of the same event. Different people were at different locations and the devestation affecting each area also varied. There is no "one story."

Yes, they should be afraid of disease. Wouldn't some of the leaches here in the States from their real country's owned and operated computers just love to see the disease spread. It will, no doubt, but we will not be the ones who get the worse end of that. Mark my word for that, for it has been foretold. blue

Susan: You are lacking in understanding, is this because you were educated on the streets and can only parrot what you hear from others whom have no understanding? If so; best thing you can do is find a good Bible believeing church and go to Sunday school.

Do you really think anyone has time for an investigation as to how people died. This is not tv. People may have to be burned right where they sit. This is a time when we have to do what we have to do.

Blue your last post (6:02) was the truest yet, although I believe it is 'burn where they lie'. As for the rest, would you mind using a little of the gentler hand that must be somewhere in your faith?
In other countries that have more practice the bodies that cannot be gotten underground are burned in piles to control the spread of disease.
That so many countries have this experience in mass disposal of bodies (in a disaster) was never more chilling to me than it is now.
