New developments as regards Hurricane Katrina include FEMA Deirector Brown to be relieved of duties pertaining to Katrina relief:
WASHINGTON - Federal Emergency Management Agency Director Michael Brown is being removed from his role managing Hurricane Katrina relief efforts, The Associated Press has learned.
And initial surveys suggest the death toll in New Orleans could wind up lower than has been projected:
NEW ORLEANS - Authorities said Friday that their first systematic sweep of the city found far fewer bodies than expected, suggesting that Hurricane Katrina's death toll may not be the catastrophic 10,000 feared.

If they'd heeded the warnings, the number may even be lower!

This is such a great development. Now maybe the news media will move on past their gruesome expectations of 10,000 of thousands of deaths in NO and start covering the overwhelming destruction that the entire state of Mississippi has experienced. The folks in Mississippi are the ones so patiently waiting for their time in the news spotlight. But alas... no mayhem, no bush-bashing tirades from the evacuees, no rampant rapes, murder, and looting...guess the temperant, responsible Mississippi folks just don't fit into the equation for a good news story... and how sad a commentary is that on our news media outlets.

I feel so badly for the people on the Northshore in Louisiana and for the good people in Mississippi. I suppose they behave so normal under pressure and stress that the heroics are not news to the most "shock factor" hounds. You know the squeeky wheel gets the oil.

Michael Brown Out As Relief Chief at FEMA - Body Count Possibly Lower Than Expected
Good news about the body count, and reasonably good news about one of the perps. Unfortunately they will just replace him with anotehr like him. It is FEMA that needs to be eliminated. Tell those people that "work" for FEMA to go out and get a job.
The states handled themselves much, much better before there ever was a FEMA. But heck....that works, so let's just keep going with what doesn't...maybe it will????

Well, some good news for some. This was the right thing to do.
Louisiana Guardsmen Return Home From Iraq
By JIM KRANE
ALEXANDRIA, La. (AP) - Greeted by the blasts of water cannon, the first planeload of 100 Louisiana National Guardsmen returned home Friday from Iraq, leaving behind the carnage of warfare for their hurricane-ravaged state.
As soon as the plane touched down, the troops clapped and yelled, ``Yeah!''
``Ladies and gentlemen, welcome home!'' a flight attendant announced on the P.A. system. ``We're glad you're home safe.''
Most of the soldiers on the plane lost everything back home to Hurricane Katrina, and will qualify for safe haven status, in which they will get a 14-day leave and then be eligible for demobilization.
After the plane touched down here following a flight from Kuwait, a pair of green fire trucks blasted the Boeing 757 with water cannon as 50 to 60 people clapped and held banners saying ``Welcome home troops.''
The soldiers clambered down the stairs and were greeted by Gov. Kathleen Blanco, who shook their hands and said ``Welcome home, men.''
``We're offering them the opportunity to continue to serve in the guard and help us rebuild southeast Louisiana,'' she said. ``That will keep them employed. This will be an opportunity to tide them over.''
Maj. Gen. Bennett Landreneau said the guard would help them find housing, and the soldiers would be allowed to go to New Orleans as soon as it was safe.

I'm disappointed to hear this news. I hope Bush did not buckle under the pressure, which is not like him. I must say, he must go to bed at night and stare at the ceiling wondering just what he did to deserve all of this in one Presidency...
Anyway, what a joke the Dems screaming now (and I think Time Magazine) that Brown exaggerated his experience on his resume. Funny how they all scrutinize his resume NOW, but not one of them thought to have their assistant check those references out BEFORE they voted to approve his nomination? Typical reactionary behavior they have displayed of late (and I am a registered Dem., so don't call me a basher).
And Nancy Pelosi, well don't get me started. Suffice it to say I am glad she is on the West Coast and I am on the East Coast.

Sorry, I meant to add also that the news regarding the death toll is very good news. My heart and prayers go out to all of the victims of this tragedy.
