A judge on Thursday ordered the release of a Dutch teenager who has been jailed for nearly three months in the disappearance of an Alabama honors student and said he would be freed this weekend, the youth's father said.
Paul van der Sloot said the judge ruled there was no reason to hold his son, Joran, any longer on suspicion of murder but the youth remained a suspect in the sexual assault of Natalee Holloway.
"The judge ruled that he must remain at the disposal of police for interrogation and follow certain rules," Paul van der Sloot, who was told of the decision by the family's attorney.
Update: Someone purports to be very happy about developments. I haven't seen an actual email.

are you kidding???
Posted by: Shari | Thursday, September 01, 2005 at 06:28 PM
OMG!!! Is this true??? I hope we hear more about it tonight. If they will let him free, then it has to be because there is no more evidence to hold them?

Dan, this is the one time I wish you were wrong.

Posted by: Shari | Thursday, September 01, 2005 at 06:31 PM
I'm going to watch the news.
Incredible. Just incredible. After 3 months of holding him in jail the judge says there is not sufficient evidence?
the laws down there make me scratch my head.
Posted by: FloridaPatty | Thursday, September 01, 2005 at 06:32 PM
I really thought they would be able to hold him longer.
Posted by: TexasGal | Thursday, September 01, 2005 at 06:32 PM
Well, if there ever was a reason to boycott Aruba, it's now. And before I get attacked by the Aruban people, it's the government I object to - not the citizens.
Joran is safer behind bars. On second thought, let him out!
Posted by: Shari | Thursday, September 01, 2005 at 06:34 PM
Wow, Incredible...... So if he remains a suspect in her sexual assault why release him? This doesn't make sense.
Posted by: usmcmom | Thursday, September 01, 2005 at 06:36 PM
If you're white, you can lie to police and be a Pimp, how great is Aruba?
Posted by: frank | Thursday, September 01, 2005 at 06:38 PM
Sorry to say the hurricane took alot of focus off of Natalee - as far as the MSM is concerned. I hope Beth keeps the pressure on to keep this in the public eye.
Posted by: Shari | Thursday, September 01, 2005 at 06:38 PM
The Aruban Judicial system and LE are full of inbreds..the way this case was handled from the beginning just makes me sick. I will never step foot on that island

Calm down and have faith in Kharma, Joran's hell has only just begun...

WHERE IS THE JUSTICE FOR NATALEE?
Posted by: Shari | Thursday, September 01, 2005 at 06:45 PM
I suppose him being innocent seems to be out of the realm of possibilities for most people.
Rumor and innuendo is all this case has been about and another example of convicting people through the media.
Guess this will take the wind out of the sails of Greta and Nancy Grace and now Aruba can have a rest from the bashing they have taken from Nancy Grace!

To Shari,
Re: Sorry to say that the hurricane took away from the Natalie Holloway story!!
That is the most discusting thing that I have read on this message board since the NH story started. Obviously you are not an educated person to have made that statement. We are having the largest national disaster thos country has ever known. We have bodies floating in the streets. We have a lawless situation in one of our major cities, children are dying, the death toll will probably exceed 3000 and you have the AUDACITY to make a statement like that.
If I said what I'm really thinking about your character, I would be kicked off of the web site. Shame on you!!!!
Posted by: tangodancer | Thursday, September 01, 2005 at 06:55 PM
He was finally released because there is no evidence that he did anything to that girl. The sexual assault charge is bogus too because that is just one of Beth's many lies.
They need to free all three of them and let them go about their lives. Beth and Jug need to go back to Alabama where they belong and take care of Matt.
I wonder what Beth and Jossy will come up with next to try and pin the disappearance of Natalee on these three guys? I am sure we will soon find out.
Posted by: Jody | Thursday, September 01, 2005 at 06:55 PM
I agree the media attention may have hurt Natalee's case, to never set foot on Aruba, and that Joran will face judgement one day at the Judgement Seat of Jesus Christ. He will tell the truth on that day and if he is innocent he will not be held accountable but if he is guilty he will not be able to deny it. His life on this side of eternity will never be "normal".
Posted by: DeeDee | Thursday, September 01, 2005 at 06:57 PM
Realitybased,
Aruba has deserved every bit of bad press it has received due to the handling and possible(likely)coverup of this case. Yes, crimes go unsolved in the US..and when the police botches a case, as in the Jon Bonet Ramsey case, the media gives them what they deserved. Either Aruban authorities are the most incompetent on the face of the earth, or there was a coverup. If Joran was innocent, why all of the lies?
Posted by: Markd | Thursday, September 01, 2005 at 06:58 PM
Jody, that's your opinion. And YES, most of us believe he knows what happened to Natalee. If this was your child, I don't think you would feel the same way, but since it's not, you try to make Beth seem as if she is being unreasonable for suspecting the liar who last spent time with her daughter having anything to do with it. Anyway, we KNOW your opinion already, so just meet Joran at his house on Saturday and quit trashing Beth.
Posted by: mexiwife | Thursday, September 01, 2005 at 07:01 PM
Tangodancer,
You're attacking my character? No, I"m not uneducated. I have a master's degree, what's your highest level of education??? If you had half a brain, you would know what I meant by that statement. I have been closely following this case from day one. If you need me to spell it out for, I will. Beth has done an OUTSTANDING job of keeping Natalee's story in the limelight. What happened in the south is an absolute tragedy. I never once indicated otherwise, so don't twist my words around!! Because of that tragedy of untold proportions, Natalee's story has taken a backseat in the main stream media. I didn't think I needed to spell it out for you. Shame on YOU.
Posted by: Shari | Thursday, September 01, 2005 at 07:03 PM
Jody, I agree with you 100%
Re: Jossy, granted he is Beth's puppet, but before the hurricane, (I have been glued to the TV and glad that the New's stations new what was important and what was not) I spent time emailing fox news with sites that referenced Jossy's mis-statements & legal situations.
Posted by: tangodancer | Thursday, September 01, 2005 at 07:04 PM
In light of how the recovery efforts are going on in the US, I don't think there's anyone in this country that should be casting stones at Aruba.
Those who believe Joran is guilty will continue to do so based on no evidence. Those who believe the investigation was botched or inept will continue to believe that no matter what the evidence.
Thank goodness I wait to see the evidence before I make a judgment of guilt or ineptness. I certainly don't want others making up my mind for me.

They are still suspects in Natalee's disappearance, they will have to appear in court for rape and kidnap charges.
The case has not been in court yet.

Well, it's kinda the American system of bailing someone, but without the money. There are other conditions.

The truth always prevails, OVER the Twitty's constant accusations. Where they lying about this boy? I guess time will tell.

Is it possible that Joran "gave up" Deepak/Satish/Freddy? I haven't been around today so haven't heard what's up with them.
I know there aren't pleas or amunity. Maybe the others did do it or maybe PVDS is paying someone off?
Thoughts?

Reality based
This message board has been very frustrating for those of us that believe in Evidence.
Especially, when our country is in the middle of a major disaster and you see a post from someone that seems to think that coverage of death & distruction kept the Natalie Holloway story from the forefront.
To Shari, I really shouldn't have to defend myself re: "Half of a Brain" since I'm not the one that wrote something stupid, however, I actually was tested 3 years ago and the term the Doctor used was "Gifted"
Posted by: tangodancer | Thursday, September 01, 2005 at 07:23 PM
Thank God, I can log off now and not come back. It was time that Joran was released for lack of evidence. Yes, Virgina, there is a Santa Claus.
bye everybody!
Posted by: tangodancer | Thursday, September 01, 2005 at 07:26 PM
tangodancer,
Did you miss the part where I agreed that there is a major disaster? I can't believe you still don't understand what I meant. I give up trying to explain myself, you'll never get it.
Let's move on and not waste time with this ridiculous nonsense.

Money talks and justice walks. We cannot say we were not warned that the travel agencies and bottom feeders from the northeast were buying justice. Notice the disinformation bloggers here, who were part to it.

Exactly, Joran will do time for rape and kidnapping, he will be the eyewitness for Deepak. That's why the charge recently of premeditated murder brought the Kalpoe's back in. The restrictions placed on Joran were because he will be tried for rape and kidnapping. Joran is the eyewitness. It's not coincidental that the father came on TV saying he's always told his son to tell the truth. They will spin it like Joran is a good guy owning up.
Posted by: frank | Thursday, September 01, 2005 at 07:32 PM
also, I read that the judge can consider when sentencing the truthfullness/helpfulness of someone. I believe we are seeing a de facto plea bargain. Again, it's no coincidence the family VDS spoke out just a few days ago.
Posted by: frank | Thursday, September 01, 2005 at 07:34 PM
This was posted on 164, found it interesting:
Laywer Carlo (Joran's Lawyer) just 2 minutes ago said officially that he was informed this afternoon that the JUDGE ORIGINALLY AGREED TO HOLD HIM FOR ANOTHER 30 DAYS, but then accepted the plea of the defense to stop the preventive detention as per Saturday UNDER CONDITIONS. Saturday is the last day of the 60 day period.
The judge cited the Sidney Ponson case.
One of the conditions, he must stay in contact and always available for further investigation to the Natalee Holloway's disappearance.
He does not know the other conditions and will not elaborate further.

There is no way this is going to happen.(Joran going free).
Paulus you slime ball, If your son was telling the truth and nothing but the truth why were you worried about what Jorans friend had to tell the police.
When your wife Anita tells us all on TV that you are such a law abiding man for years and yet its okay to gamble with your underage son breaking the law. You, Anita, and the rest of the van der sloots, are not fooling anyone! Go crawl under some rock and hide.
Aruba, justice will be served in the long run.

I am so sorry for Beth, Dave and families, I also am an ardent supporter of their fight for justice.
I would suspect that the 9 days ruined any chance of a quick resolution, so if anyone is guilty of the crime in a way it is the LE for whatever reason accepting that ALL missing girls are just partying, not cracking down on underaged drinking and gambling etc...
Sometimes ineptness is a crime on its own and certainly complacency may lead to disaster...
And of course it is inappropriate for 18 year olds from sheltered upbringings to go to an island with such licentious behavior being accepted and legal. Let this be a lesson to parents.
All women, especially young ones have to face this constantly but in a country or environment that promotes legal excess it may be even worse. And perhaps the constant "we are safe, no crime" litany lulls people into a sense of false security.
If JVDS didn't actually kill her or aid in her disappearance but knows what happens I would argue that he is still culpable and therefore deserving of punishment. But none of his buds and of course JVDS are talking, that alone after being in jail speaks of adult intervention. I guess PVDS needs to live with that and if this is all wrong then he needs to reclaim his name and public reputation.
I hope his family reexamines their parenting and that JVDS has an awakening, but I doubt it...
I would be leery if I had a young daughter and she was fond of him until this is cleared up (if it ever is...) OJ's track record has certainly been supportive of his acquittal (sp?) being wrong.
Will JVDS ever tell the whole truth or the K2 bros? Maybe as I believe Jack said it will slip sometime...
Comments about the trust fund are mean, I would suggest that there was a policy in place that detailed how the money could be used and relies on accounting. Those that speculate that Beth uses it for her own personal needs need to think about the oversight that funds like this are usually generated with. Plus we do not know why the families broke apart and for all of you who favor Dave, there may be more to the story than you want to know.
At any rate both parents have done a suberb job bringing this case into the public eye. I would stake my house that if Beth had not made such a stink this disappearance would have been a paragaph every now and then in the MSM.
final comments... I admire her mother and I wish that Natalee had never gone to Aruba. I also can say that someother girl would have taken her place (involuntarily).
God bless Beth and Dave and comfort them in their suffering

This makes me sick in the pit of my stomach.
Interesting that Joran walks and Deepak sits behind bars and a place that states it has no plea bargaining has accepted a plea to let Joran out under certain conditions. This plea is stated by Shari at 7:07pm.
Nancy Grace reporting that Joran will be released by Saturday according to his family in her opening statement. More to come later in the show.

But doesn't the prosecution have a right to appeal?
Posted by: AkekoaHoAlethia | Thursday, September 01, 2005 at 08:05 PM
why does have to be that joran was released because of a cover up or a bribe? this si the same judge that has been there all along and he finally said enough was enough - they have been holding the boy for 3 months with no evidence and any of you would go crazy if that happened to you or your loved ones - there is no evidence they needed to release him - and Jody your post is 100% correct

UNBELIEVABLE! This news disgusts me. And another bit of disusting news is that New Orleans had been trying to secure funding to build up the levies and otherwise prepare the city for hurricanes. People had been concerned about the levies NOT holding. So what happens? Those funds instead got diverting to support Bush's pet project, the war in Iraq. Today I heard Bush comment that no one had predicted that the levies wouldn't hold. WHATEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!
