A blogger sent me a link to a very compelling video of the first week of Hurricane Katrina, set to some haunting music. It includes a quick (couple seconds) fund raising request for the Red Cross at the end, video of Bush but is mostly just street scenes. Starts slowly, but has some fascinating video from the first week. You should watch this entire video ... in my opinion, of course.

OMG i need a box of kleenex... we are SO NOT prepared for another attack..

Very touching video. Especially the faces, the scenes of the dead laying in the street, the woman near death in the wheelchair holding a note and the babies...
Thank you Dan for the great link!

Post subject: SNOWBALL may be found Hunting for boy who owns him
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi-I am sure lots of people have seen the photos of the small boy being evacuated by bus from the superdome in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina and having his dog SNOWBALL taken from him and after the buses door closed the small dog pawing at the closed door, the boy cried so hard he was sick and still calling for his SNOWBALL. I am leaving this message in the hopes that someone who knows where the little boy who owns him is at. We do not know which shelter the boy is in. But the United Animal Nations and the LA SPCA say that they have found his precious SNOWBALL. The contact points for information are Karen Brown PH: 916-429-2457 or uan.org or bestfriends.com.
Anyone with any information on this boy's whereabouts please contact the above agencies. Let's try and help get SNOWBALL home and reunited with his owner. Thanks for any help.

This video is racist. Why does it look like one of those donate money to nigerian infomercials. No White people.

Jim, you must have no concept of the demographic make-up of New Orleans. It's not racist, it's the truth. I thought it was a very emotional and though-provoking video. Try to understand the facts before making outlandish statements.

email with shreve.net down..they saying under construction when I try to access the home page.
i expect all service on internet for me to go down soon.
Sometimes when email is down Instant messages will still get thru..so if youhave friends on here..you might share those addresses with them if you have instant messager..just in case this happens to you.
Right now I out of contact due to the problme with all but this blog ..
Hoping its a minor problem and will be resolved soon.
In the meantime..set up our instant messge services just in case.
this is NOT time to lose internet commication
DAN...I paranoid..but not that sure that there are some people who would LIKE to see this source of communication slowed down for their own purposes...the media is giving garbage, and the only place I feel like I getting real info is thru this thing.
update: on comments from some people at local shelter: they saying we dont' know anything about what going on/went on in NO..meaning us not them.
The situation there is more organized today.
Oh, I might go to local jail..I just evicted physically some squatters from a piece of property to make it available to evacuees...they have never paid rent..been there since 3/17 and so after numerous problems I just hired somone and moved their stuff out.
Yes I know there due process..but I fed up ..and i didn't have a month they were NOT living here ..never have..just stored crap there along with six pit bulls. when I found the crack stuff that blew it..
but like I say..I the one that will go to jail..its a misdemeanor but still carries fines and legal bills with it.
Oh, his aunt is local JP so how much good would that process have done? Another six weeks or more of their squatting on this peice of property..five bedrooms
so I got mad and I did this and yes I know its agaist the law..so like i say...might be arrested for doing it..
but you know what? I would do it again.

Oh, jim crow..you sure dont' know the South..
THAT is the population in New Orleans..
It has nothing to do with racist..these are the faces of New Orleans.
We love our South...What do you think we are? A community with maybe 5% black people? We a community with 5% WHITE in many areas.
We live together, get along, its our community..
My God Daughter walked across stage to get her diploma..she was only blond in the crowd..
The leaders here are black. Black mayors, black city councilmen, black board members..this is not racist..its the way it is here.
That video was an impact no matter what color the faces..
did you really think that the camera just picked out black people to film?
I see we have more teaching to do then I dreamed we had.
Interesting read:
go to Nationaol Geographic site..look for Louisiana wet lands for the article on New Orleans..written long before this all happend.
It was NOT unexpected..can't believe FEMA didn't know about this report ..

I would like to draw your attention to the following statements by Assistant State Veterinarian Littlefield-Chabaud released by the American Veterinary Medical Association Press Room
M. A. Littlefield-Chabaud, DVM, MS: Assistant State Veterinarian:
“We have gotten about all of the 25 million dollar transgenic mice out of the two Tulane research centers in New Orleans.
I just got off the phone with producers with ABC. Diane Sawyer is down looking for snowball. Snowball can have a college education now.”

This is a disgrace. An outrage.
It is bad enough that any disaster evacuee with a pet had to endure further trauma. It is bad enough that the AVMA seems unfamiliar with it s own disaster preparedness guidelines: “There is nothing magical or unusual about the care of animal owners and their animals. Animal owners should simply be viewed as another group with special needs.” It is bad enough that the news media have to pick up pets because the appropriate agencies are denied adequate support and access.
But this is even callous to the 572,000 people recieving disaster aid!
Although Snowball will most definitely not be going to college, the 25 million dollar transgenic mouse colony from Tulane will. But the AVMA guidelines for disaster planning address far more that high dollar, high profile needs, guidelines which emphasize the considerable coordination and advance planning necessary and required to prepare for disasters. This includes the matter of people with pets in their custody.
As far as the New Orleans evacuation is concerned, this is only one more failure, but a very significant failure from the view of “special needs” evacuees whose lives were put at risk by delays or traumatized by loss.
The end result of this failure will add to the public health risk and depletes resources and manpower to control a dangerous population of animals.
Now is the time to face the fact that in the USA pet owners in possession of their pets must be part of urban evacuation plans. This matter must be taken into serious consideration when this disaster’s response problems are evaluated and the AVMA must present strong leadership in this matter.
