does anyone have family from LA?
Posted by: Newbee | Sunday, August 28, 2005 at 06:46 PM
A gentleman from the hurricane center agreed with the ABC newreader that New Orleans may cease to exist.
Am I overstating this or could tens maybe hundreds of thousands of people be permanently homeless? Could we be looking at $5.00 a galon gas?

Gas prices are definitely going to spike after this. And depending on the track - if it goes up along the river - a lot of goods get shipped via the Mississippi - could have quite an impact all around. Heard one news guy talking about Goodbye French Quarter ...
Posted by: Dan | Sunday, August 28, 2005 at 06:55 PM
gas won't go up immediately but it will go up
Posted by: Isabell | Sunday, August 28, 2005 at 07:00 PM
Last year the port of Tampa got closed down multiple times - we had severe gas shortage. You never knew if you were going to be able to find gas. With all the offshore oil rigs right where this thing is hitting - there will be major problems. I believe that 30% of the US oil comes out of this region.

in miami we couldn't gas for over a week from Jeanne or Frances and now there is a gas shortage from Katrina

I've been following this closely. They've got a lot of people in the superdome. What are they going to do about running water, electric, ventilation, sewer backups, etc. IMO, the Auxilary generators will only provide enough amperage for minimal lighting.

will be interesting to see how fast our govt comes out with their standard mantra, no money.
they sure have scads of $$ when other countries have disasters.

___________
EXACTLY!!!!!
women birthin babies - no ambulances able to get in.........and i'll bet they won't have many medial personnel in there.
how can you take care of "bathroom" problems for 30,000 people and there be flooding outside and expect it all to FLUSH???????????
who thought of doing this? bizarre
i can't watch those people going in there either.
Posted by: ustt | Sunday, August 28, 2005 at 07:15 PM
Hey Bigfish,
I don't get the SuperDome use either. They just said on CNN that the field and first level will most likely flood. So - that would mean everyone in there would be trapped. I guess they just had nowhere else to send people. Very scary.
Posted by: linda | Sunday, August 28, 2005 at 07:16 PM
Yes gas prices up in the northeast are already at $2.60+. We discovered a gas station at Stop and Shop (grocery store) that offers 5 cents off a gallon if you have a card. Lately there has been a wait to get gas there, no matter what day or time. I can just imagine what it will be like in a few weeks.
Still glad I'm up here though and not down there.
Posted by: Hydrangea | Sunday, August 28, 2005 at 07:16 PM
.............and don't forget ........i'll bet
45% of those people going in there are diabetic or have heart problems. no place to keep the insulin,,, no ice, no place to lay down.......if the walls of that dome fly off all will be wet and what a mess
Posted by: ustt | Sunday, August 28, 2005 at 07:17 PM
They go wherever they can. They open up shelters for people in other places
Posted by: Isabell | Sunday, August 28, 2005 at 07:19 PM
I hope that people will not to try and be brave and stay. I hope they will go to a shelter. This is unbelieveable. I hope people do not die as they say they will.
I am glad I have visited New Orleans. I can always remember it as I saw it. I hope the zoo animals i saw there are locked up. I hope as well and all the squirels and ducks and geese in the beautiful park there just know something is not right and will hide where they need to. What a horrible thought of this beautiful city being wiped away.
God bless all the people on all the coastal areas and beyond. God speed and stay safe !!

They most likely have plenty of water of I would guess food for the people in the Superdome. They will only fill it to a certain point and I am sure, at least I hope they would have prepared accordingly. They must have some kind of emergency plan for a disaster.

I would imagine the walls of that dome are pretty strong, at least stronger than some homes. As far as medical needs, the military will aid in this. I have confidence that there are lots of places in that dome that people can go. It isn't going to be comfortable by any means but it is better than the alternative for some. Immediate relief may not happen but it will eventually come.

I think they said they expect to let in 20-30 thousand. My husband thinks it holds lots more so they will probably turn people away. sad.

I disagree. NO ONE WILL BE TURNED AWAY!
Posted by: TexasGal | Sunday, August 28, 2005 at 07:24 PM
it is sad but is that the only shelter? there are usually shelters spread around the safer inland areas?
Posted by: Isabell | Sunday, August 28, 2005 at 07:25 PM
Dan,
I am sure the people of NO and surrounding areas are going to need help in the following days and weeks. Will you be posting help efforts etc...where to send needed items and relief funds?

I thought that I had heard the Superdome was being used for those without transportation to get to other shelters in addition to those with special needs. Of course at this point, I would presume that will take anyone.

Sherrie good idea!
Posted by: Hydrangea | Sunday, August 28, 2005 at 07:27 PM
They will try to get the people somewhere if the superdome is full. I can't see them just closing the door and not trying to get them to a safe place. They have buses and other ways to transport these people
Posted by: Isabell | Sunday, August 28, 2005 at 07:28 PM
Whooh! I hope these people are okay. I rode out hurricane Camille five blocks from Mobile Bay and I don't ever want to get that close to one of these suckers again. God bless something will slow this thing down or direct it away from the heart of the city.
Posted by: joetwopoles | Sunday, August 28, 2005 at 07:29 PM
Earlier on , I think, it was Fox, they said people going to the Superdome would have to bring their own food & drinks because they wouldn't have food there. Only the Red Cross shelters will have food.
Posted by: punkingale | Sunday, August 28, 2005 at 07:35 PM
The superdome has been tested for winds up to 120mph, but that was a long time ago, when it was first built. It's really the only shelter as all of the other buildings are much smaller and certainly not as tall. They are saying with the expected flooding, floors 1-4 could be submerged. Nola floods with regular rainfall, add a hurricane and its problems. They have a canal system which helps to a small degree with flooding. As for medical personnel, i'm sure they will have medical personnel on call. There are several hospitals and numerous clinics, etc.
Just pray for all those who are left to suffer this storm. Many have evacuated, but sadly, some people just dont have the resources to leave.
Posted by: Cat | Sunday, August 28, 2005 at 07:42 PM
the city is in no way able to withstand the storm surge. most of the city is below sea level. they are saying there could be over a 20ft storm surge. there are going to be so many people trapped in their house as it is filling with water. it is sad to think about.

Hmm. I'll bet my favorite Gulf shrimper isn't out. In fact I hope no Gulf shrimpers are out.
And it's not gunna be a good week for boudin.
Most of all I can't keep my mind off Nawlins' poor, those without the resources to leave.
Can a baddy like this one fizzle?
Posted by: GrannyToad | Sunday, August 28, 2005 at 07:46 PM
12,000 people now in the superdome. Oil already up $4.00 per barrel. $.30cent a gallon rise in gasoline tommorrow wholesale. Ponchertrain causeway looked as though it had cleared if that was real time pic. When winds reach certain level, evacs will cease.

Posted by: GrannyToad | Aug 28, 2005 7:46:35 PM
no way! this storm was abnormally powerful as a Category 1. The pressure is extremely low and the eye is perfect. One thing that could help is that it can only stay that intense for a limited amount of time and then the eye reforms. During that process it loses some intensity and then builds back up. Hopefully it will make landfall during that time.

Not much - unfortunately. The water is extremely warm in that part of the gulf and there is basically no shear in that area. Best you could hope for would be a decrease to a 4 if it keeps up the current speed.
Posted by: linda | Sunday, August 28, 2005 at 07:51 PM
they drill for oil in the gulf. with a storm like this everyone out in the gulf has to stop working and get to land

There's a big delay in resources from those. Can maybe ride that out, see how the rigs held afterward. Wait & see.
