A poem by Emma Lazarus, "The New Colossus" is inscribed upon a plaque at the base of the Statue of Liberty.
Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me:
I lift my lamp beside the golden door.
The Immigration Blog is a timely web log being run by conservative Michele Malkin and the Immigration issue seems poised to play a significant role, if not dominate American politics during the up coming election cycle.
Democrat Governors Bill Richardson of New Mexico and Janet Napolitano of Arizona have declared controversial State's of Emergency on the issue:
A $1.5 million emergency appropriation for border counties may be just the first installment of new cash, she said, Wednesday.
Now some are pressuring California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to declare a state of emergency along California's border with Mexico, saying more federal patrols are needed.
With globalization increasingly changing America's economic role in the world as The colossus and threats to our way of life from international terrorism, can we continue to afford to hold up the lantern, even despite the law in many cases as we have? Or is it time for a major shift in immigration policy and enforcement?
America has gone through times of strong anti-immigration feelings before, with California being seen as key - as I wrote back in April here:
The American Protective Association has been formed to fight the dangers that unbridled immigration pose for the United States. It is already clear that certain mass immigration we have been seeing is destroying our public school system, which has always acted as the basis for civil and civics education in our society. Some school systems, as in California, are already so overwhelmed that they may not be able to recover.
You can bookmark The Immigration Blog to stay on top of the issue, going forward.

Thanks Dan,

The only ones who can claim they were not illegal immigrants are the Indians the land was stolen from.

I'm from a family of immigrants, but, they all came to America to assimilate into a great nation. They went to classes to learn English, learned the Constitution, and with great pride passed their citizenship, and spent their lives instilling pride in the next generation for being born in America, as Americans.
The problem now is that too many come to America who hate us, or seem to hate us. They won't learn English, nor will they abide by the concept of a great melting pot of nations who have become patriotic Americans.
I live in South Florida, and it is a requirement for many jobs I have applied to that I speak Spanish. I find that sad because my Russian and German parents struggled to learn English and made sure that was the language spoken in their homes.
Our healthcare institutions and schools are straining at the burden of undocumented, non-taxpaying, and uninsured alien residents. If any illegal shows up at a hospital, they receive the best care, the same care that we pay for, and we pay for them. The same with schools. In many places like NYC, illegals can get legal driver's licenses. How insane is that considering that's the form of ID used in airports?
We're asking for a holocaust in America by ignoring this problem.

This subject has me in fits.
I email 3to 4 letters a week to our Reps at
http://www.congress.org
The argument of this Nation was built by immigrants doesn't stand. Yes, we were in Nation building, but not anymore.
The illegals that come here are using our rules, laws and system to gain everything they can, welfare, free health care, home loans, education. Diseases we eradicated are coming back.
I heard this morning that a rancher out West told an illegal he would "pistol whip" them if they didn't turn around and go back...they sued him and our great legal system gave the illegals his ranch!
Our government is allowing illegals to take over everything...and get every freebie there is.
Lobbys like, La RAza, MALDEF and others are fighting for Latinos only...not to continue to make America great, for their reasons only.
In fact they say they will take back the West as it belonged to them anyway.
It's time to take down the Statue of Liberty, or at least the plaque.
Everyone need to write their Reps....and go to
http://www.reformus.com
and sign the petition.

"Diseases we eradicated are coming back"??
Moosetracks, your hate-filled arguments do more to harm the fight against illegal immigration than help.
That rancher? A convicted felon named Casey Nethercott who was arrested on weapons charges and had violated the terms of his probation more than once. The man he ACTUALLY pistol-whipped was described by the U.S. Border Patrol as having a head injury 'half the size of your fist'. Even the border Vigilantes call this guy a con man and loose cannon.
Nethercott refused to answer a summons to court in the case against him and the judge found for the defendants for that reason. The ranch being the only assets the court could get their hands on; it went to settle the case.
It's the LAW, Moosetracks. That's a big part of what makes America great: how our legal system works. Break the law and you pay the price. Break the law habitually and you pay a stiff price.
I know we need immigration control, but 90% of what you write is emotionally driven bullcr*p and does nothing to help.
"The argument this nation was built by immigrants doesn't stand." Selfish, disgusting stuff.
What, you're here now so Katie bar the doors? Ain't you the grand American.

I totally agree with the US immigration problem you talk about when it comes to illegal aliens. Your comment: "The American Protective Association has been formed to fight the dangers that unbridled US immigration pose for the United States. It is already clear that certain mass US immigration we have been seeing is destroying our public school system, which has always acted as the basis for civil and civics education in our society. Some school systems, as in California, are already so overwhelmed that they may not be able to recover."
is right on mark.
