Link: National Ledger - CNN President: Fox News Coverage is Nonsense.
Fox News regularly defeats CNN in the cable ratings. Apparently that is having an effect on CNN President Jonathan Klein. Matt Drudge has a flash on the Drudge Report that gives this item that is set for publication at the New York Times. Matt gives this report:

Pretty interesting--Now we know why MSNBC did what they did--It is truly a $$$$$ game, but I've never seen a grown man whine in print before

You know what kills me is the absolute hypocrisy of this statement. They did a hilarious piece tonight about it on The Daily Show, complete with a montage of CNN's "important" news coverage about things much less legitimate than the Holloway case, wish I could think of some examples off the top of my head. But the hypocrisy doesn't end there, they do more than simply cover other "illegeitimate" news stories. There own network has had the case featured nightly on Nancy Grace and frequently on Larry King Live. So it is hardly fair to say that they are only covering legitimate news stories while the other networks are out making up sopa operas for the public consumption. The fact is they report plenty of news that is much more illegitimate than the Holloway case and more importatntly they spend plenty of time covering the Holloway case itself.

It gets the ratings.

What we want is what we want!
My local top news / talk radio station, KFBK, Sacramento, dropped ABC news last week after dozens of years, to begin broadcasting FOX radio news!
Now I don't like many of the things FOX does for it's "entertainment" value. But I don't like many of the things my government does either, or some of my relatives or neighbors for that matter. But when all is said and done, they are all about as good as you can get!
And, they are all who I choose to live with!!!

Network TV (and yes the so called "news" is network TV) is on the air for one reason, money! They want to attract and hold an audience for as long as possible so that the audience can be exposed to as much advertising as possible. Plain and simple sell as much advertising as possible, and then get the people in the advertisers door. This is just CNN's Jonathan Klein stating that his efforts to attract the audience to CNN are not working as well as FOX and he wants to create a media buzz to get the audience back to CNN...

Today's news:
Diario: MSNBC has been forbidden of showing images and sound of a recording they made of JvdS in prison, without his permission or his lawyer's being informed. Even when he requested them not to do this, they continue to do it and trying to interviwe him in his cell, with the prison director next to them.
In an urgent courthearing (kortgeding) the lawyers defended the case in front of a judge who later agreed that the privacy of one of the suspect in this case that is still being held, were violated.
If the court ruling are not being followed, for everytime sound/image/video are transmitted is there a fine of Afls. 1.000.000,00 (appr. $ 600.000,00).
Meanwhile, for not following procedures, the director of the Prison has been suspended for investigations.
Awe Mainta: Headline; NBC violated privacy of JvdS. Must pay Afls. 1.000.000,00 for everytime they show images of Joran in prison.
KIA Director, Maduro, has been suspended and declared last night that he will be held responsible for his decision.
AvdS in a short statement said, that she was happy with the court decision, and that this unethical way of getting news of the media is intollerable and unacceptable. The last few weeks, gossips and assumptions has been used as facts.

MSNBC/NBC went over the line for a scoop yesterday. Feigning innocence, IMO, the reporter on the ground claimed she had no idea she would find Joran in a jail cell. Sure, honey. And I just fell off a turnip truck.
Exploiting the friendliness of the Aruban people, NBC cooked up a scheme to get inside the jail. Why on earth would anyone care to see the inside of an Aruban jail, except to see what Joran is up to?
Talking to the warden about Joran's behavior, we learned he resisted transport one night, until his father was released from jail - but they dragged him over anyway. We learned he got hostile and "in his mom's face" during an encounter, but it was not clear if that was a rumor being shared by the warden or if it occurred in the jail. We learned he gets along well and was, in fact, reading a book in his underwear when NBC "lucked" into filming him.
It appears the reported black eye and bruising inflicted on Joran, by a shorter, yet feisty inmate, during a weekend soccer match was another lie or gross exxageration- no one reported or filmed any injury.
Failing to produce any solid evidence of the network's deceit, the judge only ruled in favor of the defendant's request to suppress the playing of the film. But the network will not be deported.
The network producer who cooked up this ploy should be fired. Now all we have is another reason for Arubans to be pissed off. And they are the folks we should strive to keep in our corner. A large group gathered outside the courthouse in record time and let it be known they are fully in support of Joran on this one. The Twitty attorney said it was clear they think Joran has been abused by the American media.
When the reporting and the media become the news instead of reporting the news, they are way out of control.

he is absolutely correct, regardless of what CNN puts on the air. Fox News is a scandelous entertainment channel. As much as I have been enamored with the NH story, it should be a dead story. We all know how it it is going to end. I am not defending CNN, but kudos to Bob Costas the other night (filling in for Larry King) refusing to talk about the NH story. It has to stop.

Is Mr. Klein more upset that Fox is geting ratings covering the Natalee Holloway story or his inablility to promote his own political agenda...

Have you noticed the blogs are getting shorter and shorter. I am from Alabama and Fox news pays way more attention to this case than our local news station. It can not go on forever and for all these bloggers that are negative about the coverage Natalee is getting ... just think with our the coverage you wouldn't have anything to bitch and moan about and you would have to go back to your same ol' boring life. If you don't like what you see then don't watch and get a life.

Don't kid yourself there will always be something to bitch about. Maybe the teen actor who is missing, maybe the groom from the cruise ship, maybe the model missing in OH or maybe the missing 9 month pregnant woman in Idaho. As there is a beginning there is an end and this is it. Let other missing persons get the attention they deserve as well. Or do you think the Natalee Holloway reality tv show should still go on? You can turn over every rock in Aruba twice but that won't help if her body was dumped in the ocean over 2 months ago. Do you blame the Aruba LE for that too?

I have been a Fox news watcher ever since they came on the air. I do include some MSNBC in my news diet as well. But every time I even try to watch CNN I am either bored with whatever they're covering or turned off by their blatant leanings. Can't remember the last time I was ever able to stay on that channel for even five minutes. Probably during the first Gulf war before the other channels were up to speed. I have honestly given them the opportunity to gain my viewership but they just seem to be in another world than my own.
Great blog, Dan!

One thing that is easy to notice in this story is Klein thinks the big story is reporting body counts of soldiers and the tough news in Iraq. I'll admit I don't catch enough CNN to know--but does CNN ever run any of the positive news in Iraq?
This from the article. I find CNN so absolutely right limping in its coverage of Iraq. YES people are dying, okay, WE GET THAT HELLO!!! Then they launch into the "plummeting" presidential approval ratings.
Do I care if he is approved of? Not just no but hell no. Some poll showing how popular he is reminds me of yearbook superlatives.
Natalee Holloway IS an American story. Had Beth Twitty (there is the real story) not been so tenacious in her quest the story would have died and look at all the stinky sediment that is being dredged up! And our AMERICANS, our neighbors, our coworkers, our families are vacationing there?
One never really likes to dwell on what ifs but this last incident with the reports of the 16 year old having previously outted Van Der Sloots conduct yanked my remaining faith in the LE on that island.
This is a story, it's not hype, it's a story.

dan, i understand that all of the arguments have caused you to shut down the natalee holloway discussions, but i can't stress enough, how important they are for this case...i'm sure you know that already...please reconsider.
Posted by: JL | Thursday, August 25, 2005 at 10:09 AM
ARe the NH discussions shut down? Does Dan have legal problems because of the statements we have made or is he avoiding legal problmes..
If we cut off..I will miss all you guys.
I wont' miss Beth tho..I predicted long ago that there would be a back lash against her.

Great articles today BTW.

Did Dan close down Natalee blog ?
Posted by: maria | Thursday, August 25, 2005 at 11:30 AM
As I prefer the print medium, I don't watch much television other than news, and really not much of that prior to the Natalee Holloway story. I don't much like CNN and its parent Time-Warner for their liberal bias. Fox gives me an alternative, and I vote with my remote.

KIA Director, Maduro, has been suspended and declared last night that he will be held responsible for his decision.
Whose moeny got the gate open to JvdS cell - was it MSNBC or Holloway money. It might be elucidative to inspect Maduro's bank account to correlate with scoops by Jossey in Diadario. It would be reasonable to think Josey is the middle man for funds delivery.
Remember, the Alabama gang is playing in Aruba just like they play at home.

None of you have really been paying much attention to Dan when he said he was not going to tolerate off topic conversations. Last night a couple of individuals were chatting off topic and that was all going on in there. He has had it. You know, Dan has put more hours in a day towards this Blog than he has towards his own daily life. People didn't appreciate it, and obviously, people didn't take him seriously, because all of you are still chatting off topic. Let it go, it's over. Maybe he will resume when he cools off. But for now, give the man some respect. And Natalee too. Please, just listen to me. OK?!

Hey, Maria...some of us are in the "Aruba Doesn't Seem to Be Helping" thread. It seems that people were just generally chatting about nothing in the NH blog last night and Dan just pulled the plug. I can't blame him...it was sort of silly.
Come join us...

Fox is utter crap, as is the Drudge Report. But CNN criticizing Fox is a case of the pot calling the kettle black. Larry King and Nancy Grace? Gimme a break, CNN! CNN is as much a part of the slow brainwashing/dumbing-down of America as Fox is.

The following comments on her blog make me wonder if she is:
A) Mentally challenged?
or
B) Drinking while writing her blogs?
or
C) Both??
"The fact that Natalee Holloway has not returned and the fact she left behind a passport and was looking forward to college persuades me that she is dead, but this is not "legal evidence" of murder. People take off — e.g. the Runaway Bride. People also have accidents (drown.) I don't think Natalee took off, but there is no legal evidence to the contrary. I don't think her death was accidental — but I have no evidence other than my personal speculation. I assume Natalee is dead and assume it was foul play —- but my assumption is my speculation. Speculation is not evidence. Convictions require evidence. When looking at any investigation, you have to step back and think, “Am I guessing this?” Guessing is speculation — not evidence. Can I point to specific facts that actually prove this?
Note however, that when you have sufficient pieces of evidence pointing in one direction (circumstantial evidence), it can rise to the level of proof needed for a conviction. You don't need eyewitnesses to prove something. For instance, if a huge pool of Natalee's blood were found someplace but not her body, that blood would not be speculation of death or foul play but rather circumstantial (and convincing in my mind) evidence of death and foul play. People don't bleed profusely, survive and take off. Huge amounts of blood means death — you need blood."
The "you need blood" comment is vintage Greta.

Embellishment changes the whole story:
Even when he requested them not to do this, they continue to do it and trying to interviwe him in his cell
Glad those cameras were rolling. Let's see if Joran acutally said that. What was reported was he said he could not say anything.

They aren't important to this case. This case is being handled by professional law enforcement, the FBI and professional search teams. Real detectives. Armchair detectives have never and will never be helpful in solving crimes. Keep your theories to yourself-and don't watch so many mystery movies and tv shows.
