Some picture I saw, it looked like the jail was pretty much gone. The inmates were in the water.

What happen to their disaster plan?

What happen to their disaster plan?

It failed. They did not anticipate it being this bad. The fact that the pumps and the levee failed made it as bad as it could get. They cannot even implement a disaster plan because they cant even get around the city.

Their PLAN is a disaster along with everything else.

I don't think it is wise to be quick to judge. These people are living a nightmare. Would any of us do better given the situation? I wouldn't.

I hope i didnt give the impression of judging. I agree with you 100%. They are doing the best they can there.

A policeman was shot in the face yesterday and tonight two guys with AK-47s have started firing on police while their friends loot.
Posted by: proudredneck | Tuesday, August 30, 2005 at 11:31 PM
It is so sad to see all of the looters on tv. Instead of trying to aid people in need they are contributing to the horror. Sickening to hear the stories of the shootings.

I sit here in a small rural town in the midwest, with a total of 100 people and not a bad one in the bunch. I have a mountain of bills to pay, a car which is way late on an oil change and new tires, and I am wondering how I am going to afford gas for the next two weeks until I get paid again. As I sit here with my dog at my feet, a cold Dr. Pepper within hands reach, and a roof over my head, life is looking pretty damn good in spite of a few "inconveniences". After witnessing the peril of my southern neighbors, I doubt I will ever find much worthy of complaining about after seeing so much suffering. And if I do, may God see fit to open my eyes to see that it is me who is indeed blessed.
My heart is completely broken for these people.

would you say that our men and women serving in iraq would do better at home in this crisis....we would have no need to fear foreign terrorists if our officials didn't sleep with the enemy, train them, and give them ammunition, only for them to turn around and terrorize us....tell me is mother nature not destroying enough at home, where we need all manpower that we can have now, and help people in need...please don't say that we need to show the terrorists that they cant do this to us, when we have mother nature terrorizing us....
if we left the terrorists alone and stop doing business with them, and stop being greedy we may have none of them ever threading our turfs...however, it is not so, since we need our men and women coming back in body bags, i mean after all that is honorable...
here we are in a dire crisis, and of course the oil prices will now go up, its the only sensible thing to do isn't it?....the halliburtons need more money, they need more contracts...mother nature is destroying more and more each year, yet the world continues to be greedy...the looters are having a field day, rather than helping they need to steal...shaking head in disbelief.and we are here judging the arubans, when our own are killing one another in the worst possible crisis...peace to the world

Keep saying it without despair, Speaker. People on the ground are acting like people and only the local can lead. I'm sure there are many stories of sacrifice and courage in the same neighborhoods, and 'our own are killing one another' is a bit of a stretch if you seek to differentiate that kind of behavior from the rest of US the rest of the time.
Continued passionate logical outreach toward the inevitable global community. The time will come. Build Now.

I saw on t.v. that this was a rumor.
The inmates of the prison had to be evacuated and they were sitting in rows on an off ramp of I-10 that has been turned into a boat dock. Not far from where the prisoners were were other people (families with children) who were also being evacuated.

Those looters are horrible, taking food is one thing, but I saw one guy carrying out men's suits!
I hope the cops check to see if any of those people are illegal aliens...if so call ICE and deport them....now!

Here's a crazy Liberal concept.
1) People, esp. in poor neighborhoods, will loot businesses if the opportunity presents.
2) The insurance companies will pay out their losses and then quietly get to raise their rates across the board, making more money. Yesterday I learned Ins. Co. stock can go up during a disaster!
3) When the rates are raised, fewer poor (& middle class) people can afford insurance, and have a greater chance of total loss.
4) So this system contributes to the widening gulf between rich and poor in this country (please, that's not an opinion; the widening part).
5) So let the poor bastards loot. You think those stores aren't totaled? Keep enough Guard to maintain some order; but don't lose focus because people are doing what people do. Those people are looting because they are There; and I daresay many of us would be joining in if we were in that predicament.

There are worse things happening all over this area.
Posted by: clintcarter | Wednesday, August 31, 2005 at 11:43 AM
My prayers go out to all the folks who are going through this tragedy of nature. To bad the looter can't put there energy toward helping with the rescue efforts instead of terroizing an area already in terror from the hurricane. JMHO.

I do not condone looting although there is another side.
Many of these people are taking the necessities they need for God knows how long they are going to need them. Many of them have no idea where they will sleep tonight. They don't have a change of clothes and have been wearing them since the hurricane struck. Babies are wearing dirty diapers and are not receiving proper nutrition. Many have not have so much as a peanut butter sandwhich since this started.
In sane times, most of us would never be driven to taking things we did not pay for. And I am confident that most of the citizens of NO wouldn't either. But how many of us can say we wouldn't steal out of desperation and for worse, looking into our childs face and not having to wonder where our babies next meal was going to come from. It is wrong to steal but how right is it to let your family starve and go without if there was a way to provide for them in some capacity? Basic survival instincts. We should not judge unless we have walked in their footsteps.

And just where do those prisoners think they are going? They will be looked after and fed in the jail, then taken to dry land. If they are on their own they will meet up with people just as desparate as they are. At least they have armed protection. They arm themselves, others out there are armed as well. That is the first place desperate people go is to the pawn shops, and places where weapons are sold. They figure it worse comes to worse....blue

Moosetracks,
Perhaps the suits are the only clothing available at this point. You grab what you can.

I must say that I too, was complaining about things that were beyond my control. I have a bed, car, and a job and I cry over things that aren't as serious as Katrina victims. Just this morning I was able to see how truly blessed I am. My heart goes out to those that have lost not only material goods, but family members. What about the kids that lost their parents or the parents that lost their kids? What about the elderly that wasn't as fortunate to evacuate? I mean it's so many things going through my mind...
We are facing some sad days and as each day goes by it's reminding me that I shouldn't take anyone or anything for granted.

Today, I realized I spent almost $400 on college books, racked up a $91 phone bill, I didn't have enough money to purchase a new phone, and that I did not have enough money to get a new set of tires. But then it struck me, I have a car, I am going to school, I have food in my stomach, and I have a roof over my head where my loved ones are there to guide and comfort me. I was angry about all the money woes mentioned prior but when I came to the realization that many in New Orleans do not have food, clothing, phones, or (in some cases) loved ones nearby or at all, I was ashamed and enlightened. There are worse things in this world than Gas prices being "astronomical", or textbooks being way over-priced; I could be a Katrina Refugee...THEY NEED OUR HELP! DONATE! DONATE! DONATE! SUPPORT YOUR COUNTRYMEN!

if i was put in that situation i would steal food too especially if i had children to feed...am i suppose to let them starve to death? i dont think so...and to answer your question Isabell...the cops are not watching the prisoners because they're too busy trying to catch "looters" ....i think i would be more worried about the snipers, rapist, and murderers
