In a Dutch interview Aruban Police Superintendent Jan van der Straten told the reporter that he doesn’t believe that Natalee is still alive.
With regard to Natalee’s status, van der Straaten gave the following statement to a Dutch reporter:
Translation:
Rep: Any hopes for a positive outcome?
Jan: You always have to be hopeful, but I don’t believe anymore that we will find Natalee alive.
Rep: Why not?
Jan: Because I know the details of the investigation and you don't!

Update2 from a reader:
The correct translation of what Mr. Van der Straten said, i.e., Omdat ik het
onderzoek ken en u niet, is: "Because I am an investigator (a policeman) and you
are not."
It is not, as earlier reported, "Because I know the details and you don't."

@Catherine - So now, it's she had "seen" him all week and that in your blog got translated into "had been flirting with him all week." Rather than get so touchy, just think before you post and then you might say whatever it is you intend to say instead of things coming out garbled and backwards. Just a recommendation. Nothing to get "uptight" about. Some people can't take a constructive suggestion. Sorry, but any unsubstantiated slur on Natalee (whether intentional or due to sloppy research and posting without thinking things out first) is certainly worthy of being brought to people's attention in my mind. Guess it's just my sense of justice.

I really don't know why so many are convinced that NH was loose or wanted to have relations w/ JVDS. None of her friends ever saw her kissing or holding hands with him. What is unusual about a nice boy, that you may indeed be attracted to, offering to show you a lighthouse that is nearby. That in no way implies that she intended to have sex with him. I hate it when people blame the victim, JVDS has to take personal responsibility for acts that were beyond what NH allowed. I'm sure she didn't ask him to kill her. Personal responsibility, learn about it.

Parents in the United States fill their kids heads full of sex and violence every time they support tv commercials, movies, and tv shows. Women are depicted as hormonal, sex crazed animals, while men are always getting just what they want. Wake up girls, women are for more than f-ing. Some of them may even have brains and realize that life is more than an erect penis. Mothers teach your girls that men will go to any length to satisfy sexual needs. If killing is necessary, then, ok. Girls grow up and understand that those movies and tv shows use sex to sell. You make the choice. Natalee did - parents should have taught her that rich little island boys will tell a girl anything to get what they want - I think it is the fault of parents for not continuously training the girls.
