Patrick: Joran is 17 years old too. He seems to be handling the pressure a lot better than the girls. And, we seem overly critical of his story changes.

You know, Jessie, that is totally uncalled for. These kids have lost a close friend and they are probably scared to death of being on TV, etc. I'm sure the FBI has also told them not to say a whole lot. Back off of these kids. And believe me, they are NOT retards!

Not everyone in Mountain Brooke are rich, but it is very possible that their lawyers have told them to be careful with what they are saying.
If I was that age, and something happened to my friend, then I would probally act all stiff and stuff on national tv as well. They are probally scared half to death, the spotlight is on them all of a sudden and not sure what to say and not to say.

Harry, your correct that is true. I'm a sucker I'll admit it..I feel sorry for Joran...and I still believe that one is innocent till proven guilty....

Those two kids say they left the bar at midnight.
Natalee is said to have left at about 1am. Hell,I can drink a half pint of Wild Turkey in and hour not be the same person that someone saw an hour earlier.

Hey athiest girl and Pamy. Nobody changed any story. Go over to Greta and read the transcipt and then stop posting false statements that you pick up on other websites and post here as factual. YOU FIND FOR ME ON TRANSCRIPTS TONIGHT WHERE EITHER ONE OF THOSE 2 GIRLS SAID THEY MET JVDS FOR THE FIRST TIME AT C&C's, and then find for me the transcipt from the show which contradicts that. Guess what, you won't find it because you DIDN"T LISTEN TO WHAT WAS SAID. GEEEZZ. This is unreal.
Posted by: patrick | Tuesday, July 19, 2005 at 11:20 PM
Did even one friend stay behind when Natalee didn't show up at the airport, the meeting place to leave?? Wouldn't her roommates have tried to get her stuff together for her so at the last minute she could just grab her purse and run? We know they didn't do those things. They were self absorbed then and they still are now. I wouldn't trust these kids to babysit my pet, let alone be a true friend to other's or even themselves. The last thing these kids should do is go off to college, hello parents - these one's aren't ready for any of it.

Mt. Brook is one of the best schools in the world they have a very strong academic program and the girls were most likely just scared. And I just rewatched the part about who refused and only the Brothers refused! They ask them last Thursday and their lawyer said no so they got a court order.
Please all pray this gives Beth some answers and the whole family! God Bless them!

are you the same bey that is on one of the kalpoe tickle web sites as a friend?

The Dutch are smart fellows, Anne. It is best you don't play poker with them.
Posted by: harry | Tuesday, July 19, 2005 at 11:21 PM
Wow, Patrick! Why are you so hell-bent on defending these girls who are obviously lying "on NATIONAL TV"?
How do I expect them to act? I expect them to answer questions honestly without looking like they are reading the answers off cue cards. It's not a case of nervousness or stage fright. The other two MBHS kids interviewed didn't act like cardboard cut-outs like these two girls did, and that was my point.

Watching on the record with Greta right now...am I the only one who thinks Natalee's friends look stiff and unfeeling? If Natalee was my friend I think I'd be a little more reactive and emotional. They seem rehearsed and it sounded like they didn't even seem to care....or covering something up...

I am beginning to think the MB crowd are hiding something.
What? I dont know yet.
If Natalee was into drugs, why dont they just say it.
If they were into drugs, just say it
If they all were into drugs, just say it.
For my part, this isnt about them doing drugs or not, its about finding Natalee.
They are being as obstructive as the Aruba Police.
Usually, guests are "prepped" before going live. to make them at ease being on tv.
But their reluctance to talk is criminal and sad.
people with nothing to hide hide nothing

This "BamaMom" wonders if the long-awaited is more for show, to pacify the public and the Holloway-Twitty family, just like the beach reenactments and the F-16's...still, I wake every day hoping that the headlines read, "Natalee found".

This is exactly what I thought. The Aruba investigators have been heavily criticized about not doing the kind of forensic work that some expected and this included taking DNA. I think they did it just to make a show of it, and also legitimately in case they need it to run matches against anything. And if it is for show, it is already working as revealed by the posters on this board.
Also, there are the two missing beach bums, and an investigation underway of the man who was decapitated (the one whose wife is charged with the murder) and there is some who think it may be related to Natalee's disappearance instead of a spousal dispute, and possibly more unsolved mysteries they haven't chosen to highlight to the press. Maybe they just want to run DNA checks against evidence from some of those other cases to rule out any hands on involvement of any of the three suspects in this case.
I don't think they have squat for verifiable evidence in the Hollaway case.

Harry, your the fellow here if I remember correctly who came on and attacked NH's uncle for writing a heartfelt and thoughtful letter to the Aruban Newspaper? What is the point of your post to me? JVDS has been called cocky and confident. He's 6'5 and has lived in Europe and Aruba. He is allowed to gamble and cruise all around late at night. Are you comparing his age to the girls from Mountain Brook and stating that because they are the same age that the girls shouldn't be uptight on national tv. Get a clue. More of the same nonsense from you. YOU SIR, HAVE AN AGENDA THAT I DO NOT CARE FOR. NOR DO I CARE FOR THE TONE OF YOUR POSTS AND ATTACKS ON THE HOLLOWAY FAMILY. Does JVDS deserve a fair trial. Yes. End of story with our exchange.
Posted by: patrick | Tuesday, July 19, 2005 at 11:25 PM
if you were known as a good christian girl, driven by perfection, would you want to show up at the airport and go home with a hang over? the last night might have been more careful and paced, not the crazy last fling everyone on these chats keep describing.
Posted by: pamy | Tuesday, July 19, 2005 at 11:25 PM
Yes, there are conflicting reports. Greta said "saliva" and Scarborough said "blood."
Also, Scarborough report said that the Kalpoes attorney asked if the samples were needed because of new evidence. The police wouldn't say so the Kalpoes attorney refused to voluntary have the boys submit for the test. Then it was ordered.

Posted by: harry | Tuesday, July 19, 2005 at 11:29 PM
if i didnt think the police were on the vandersloots' side and leaking all that is going on to them and helping them in every way they can, I would think they are taking dna to make the vandersloots and the kalpoes think they have very important evidence, even a body washed up in a cave after the hurricane, or other great evidence against which they have to compare the dna.

Kay, that's just swell Mt. Brook is great with the academics, "one of the best schools in the world" - that may be a stretch, LOL. Too bad Common Sense wasn't taught, that must be why many in this group don't appear to have much.

They sre using the DNA to check the hair on the duct tape.
Posted by: late | Tuesday, July 19, 2005 at 11:31 PM
To our medical experts, is there different information in saliva than blood as far as DNA analysis? I don't know that much about the nuances between getting a blood sample versus a saliva sample. Anyone know if there are distinctions between the two?
Posted by: annie | Tuesday, July 19, 2005 at 11:32 PM
Annie: The only difference in DNA count would be the affinity of each substance.
Posted by: harry | Tuesday, July 19, 2005 at 11:34 PM
harry, does that mean you cannot compare blood DNA with saliva DNA and vice versa?

What station does Gretta come on? I have never been able to catch her at all? Can someone pleasee tell me.. thanks!!
Posted by: BirmighamNative2000
=========================================
FOX Cable News. Combs (with Hannity and Combs) and Geraldo, all of FOX also went to Aruba and did reports, but Greta has been the FOX mainstay.
Greta's show comes on at 9:00 Birmingham, Alabama time. Channel # will depend on your access network, cable, satellite,... You can go to the Fox website and read transcripts of her Aruba interviews in archives.
Joe Scarborough on MSNBC, Nance Grace with Court TV, and some others have done periodic reporting about this case also, although they did not go to Aruba. Their transcripts probably are posted on line at their stations websites also.
Greta's coverage is the most regular and balanced. I think it is helpful that she is an attorney as well as a reporter, even though their legal system is different than in the US.
Posted by: shonane | Tuesday, July 19, 2005 at 11:38 PM
No, Annie, it does not mean that. Affinity has to do with the ability of the substance to contain or store an amount of a particular chemical.

Bahaaaahaaaaa! Ummm Kay, very, very far from that, I think you need to get YOUR head out of the sand or put the bong down and see the situation with these kids for what it is. Even (Especially), since it appears YOU are one of them.

I can't believe how hard some of you are being on the two MB girls interviewed on TV tonight. I am one of the most outgoing people you would ever meet and the Queen of witty chitchat to boot, and when I was asked to audition for a TV commercial when I was younger, the second the camera lights were turned on, I went mute. I couldn't move my lips. If you've never been in that situation, it may be hard to imagine how intimidating it is... but trust me, it's extremely intimidating. Also, I think it's probable that all of the MB kids have been advised by attorneys what NOT to say on TV in order not to jeopardize the case (according to Aruban law). If you combine bright lights, a microphone stuck in your face, their young age and then trying to remember what they can and can't say, it's just an overwhelming position to be in. Maybe the girls aren't saying everything they know on TV, but that doesn't mean they haven't told the FBI everything they know. I doubt there is one kid in MB that wouldn't do anything within their power to help bring Natalee home.

Saliva can show up in teeth marks...say if the duct tape looked like it was cut with the teeth...they would want saliva to compare....blood and urine is good source of DNA too but getting saliva with a swab rubbing inside of the mouth is less painless then pricking a finger for blood.
Posted by: bey | Tuesday, July 19, 2005 at 11:43 PM
They use saliva to do paternity testing so it must give the DNA strand.

dri -- You don't know what I know or not! I am just saying you shouldn't just judge on you hear they did! Also, I don't know many people who at that age didn't make a few mistakes! You don't know who I am and if I was there or not! lol Unless, you are Deepak or Satish!!!!! LOL
Jokes on YOU!!!!! You ran your mouth big time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Keep having those bad dreams you told me about!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: Kay | Tuesday, July 19, 2005 at 11:46 PM
It will show the same results...using blood or urine or saliva.....the saliva will give a bonding effect of componds...like if they was wanting a clump of something that would look something like a fingerprint...a patern or bond in the saliva..to compare it with saliva found...

So the Robokids are back again, huh? Still telling the same story about leaving at midnight, but now denying they met Joran at the casino.
Why them, why now? Two months later. They didn't have squat to say before, why would they have anything to add now?

everyone who is getting all upset about the MBHS girls who were on Greta tonight...Chill Out!
They read this stuff just like we do and at 17-18 years old, you get a little uptight about people's opinion of you (not to mention all the flack they get here in the B'ham area from people who call them rich snobs).
I'd also imagine it's easier to talk to someone in person rather than hearing their faint voice in an ear-bud...that, and a big tv camera in your face doesn't do much for your nerves.
BTW, I am 24 and don't live in MB, nor do I know any of the MB people they've interviewed.
Posted by: bhamsteph | Tuesday, July 19, 2005 at 11:49 PM
Justhelping: Just think of the girls being handcuffed and incarcerated in a jail cell. They might be nervous enough to contradict themselves a few times, if they were being interrogated instead of interviewed.
Posted by: harry | Tuesday, July 19, 2005 at 11:49 PM
I doubt that a judge would sign an order just for a bluff. They are actually rather similar to us in that regard, to get a court order or a warrant, you have to have a good basis, typically supported by some sort of evidence.
Posted by: annie |
=======================================
I disagree. Given the situation that they all are suspects related to her disappearance, the prosecution should have no problem getting a judge to authorize collection of DNA for possible matches against any evidence in a general sense, even if they don't have anything specifically that they are ready to use the DNA to match against. Same for finger prints which are routinely collected.
Posted by: shonane | Tuesday, July 19, 2005 at 11:49 PM
That's just it 'JustHelping', Natalee's life very obviously was and is on the line, all bets are off, you get on at any opportunity and spill it, what more is there left to lose, LIFE, it doesn't get any bigger than that. They wanted to be treated like grown-ups and were, but they very much are NOT.
Posted by: drj | Tuesday, July 19, 2005 at 11:49 PM
Only thing is they said on Gretta they wasn't getting the saliva for comparison...so either they r lying or a judge ordering them to have it done even if nothing to compare it to doesn't exist is just plan foriegn to us....that's another difference in the our laws to theirs.
Posted by: bey | Tuesday, July 19, 2005 at 11:50 PM
They are most likely *not* trying to match "saliva found." DNA is in hair, saliva, blood, semen ..... you can use any to match the other.
Posted by: late | Tuesday, July 19, 2005 at 11:50 PM
MB students were clearly coached,in a legal sense, even it didn't work very well...Katherine, when asked if she saw the Kalpoes at C&Cs - "If I did it was only in passing, so I'd have to say no to that". FE says re: whether or not Natalie was drinking/partying - "I can't say that she was".
Those are phrases used to NOT SAY what you know.
I'm with whoever said they don't know why Greta continues to have them on her show.
Posted by: bamabelle | Tuesday, July 19, 2005 at 11:53 PM
Not only that but if they never did get DNA and this case has to hold in a file for years...then they have it to go back on when they open it up again someday....is like "for the records"
Posted by: bey | Tuesday, July 19, 2005 at 11:54 PM
hmmm but then again I don't think they reopen a case after years...I thought I heard they have 2 yrs to prove this case. Not sure how their law works.
Posted by: bey | Tuesday, July 19, 2005 at 11:55 PM
If it turns out that Natalee was murdered, I believe, most international courts maintain no statute of limitations on murder.
Posted by: harry | Tuesday, July 19, 2005 at 11:57 PM
About Tito's comment that they didn't have anything to compare it to - I believe that is hard to prove. First off, we keep hearing over and over that no one knows what they have. So how could he know this for certain? Second, we keep hearing that anything linked to the press before the case is tried could compromise the case.
I personally don't hold any weight to his comment. Bottom line, no one knows what they have in their hands (other than a) a bone a woman brought in, b) thong panties found at the same place as the bone, c) a yellow scrunchie, and d) duct tape with blonde and darker colored hairs on it. Beyond that, we know they took the two vehicles in for testing (from the VDS house) and two bags of "stuff" from the VDS house. That stuff was sent to Holland for testing, and Diario wrote an article recently stating that none of the information gathered gave any evidence. But again, I don't necessarily trust Diario's information. How would they know?
I say we are just going to have to wait until someone in authority comes out and talks to the press directly.
Posted by: annie | Tuesday, July 19, 2005 at 11:58 PM
I wonder if because their laws are so different if that is why this case is so interesting to us. Because it is like we are solving it. But, if not for our media (Fox) we wouldnt even have the info we have now, because it don't appear that they would offer any info to their readers or media. This seems like a whole diff ballgame and I notice it even throws Gretta for a loop lol and she's excellent at this stuff..soooooo
Posted by: bey | Tuesday, July 19, 2005 at 11:59 PM
Those girls are hiding something, when Greta asked if Natalee was under the influence of drugs or had been drinking, Frances said uh, no, uh I mean no. Why hesitate?
And as far as Mt. Brook being one of the best schools in the world, thats funny, because they didn't make the top 100 H.S. in the U.S. or even in the top 200, after that I got tired of looking where they ranked but be my guest and look for yourself.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7723397/site/newsweek/
As far as what happened to Natalee, I think Shango and Brian are way more on track, but hey thats just my opinion.
