GARY, Ind. (AP) - Divers stopped their search of a river Thursday without finding any signs of a 2-year-old girl who flew through an SUV's window and plunged at least 40 feet from a highway bridge into the water. Authorities said she was presumed dead.

When I read this story it reminded me of Nicole Kidman's first film. The one on the boat. Right at the beginning of the movie you see a car accident and it showed her child flying past her, and through the windshield.
This is not a movie though, its real life. My sympathies to the family.

That is awful. Too sad. Why in the world would she not be in a child restraint I do not know. My three youngest (3,2,7mo.) never go anywhere without their "seats" as they call them. We live in a small town and if they ever ride with gramdma and grandpa or aunts and uncles they always have those seats.

This is horrible. I agree with RJ, I'm the same way. I can't tell you though, how many times I see people driving with their little kid in the front seat or jumping around in the back. Its really sad.

febrile seisures, holes in the heart, etc.
no matter how careless this family was, they are surely paying the price for it now

Thats only the three boys. The three girls are 14, 8 and 6! they never rode unrestrained either, nor do they now.
Posted by: RJ | Thursday, July 28, 2005 at 08:54 PM
MrsJ, I know what you mean. I've seen that too. I don't want to place blame on anyone, because I couldn't even imagine the pain (AND NEVER WANT TO), that they must be going through.
People just don't get it sometimes, maybe I am an over protective mom, but oh well, NOTHING is more important to me than my child. NOTHING.

I am DONE as well! They are great blessings. The best accomplishments of my life. This going to sound bad, but I live in Texas and many minorities do not have their children use carseats and safety restraints. Always I see babies standing up or on someones lap.

Are u by anychance referring to 'Mexicans',RJ? If you are don't feel bad because I'm 1/4 Mexican But American born & we've noticed that also here in Cali. These 2 men wrecked on the San Mateo bridge & BOTH kids in the car went flying into the bay which shocked me, I still can't see how that happen. What they just fky out the side windows or something? Anyway one of the men were the father to the kids & wasted no time diving in. Witnesses helped him out & called for help. He was able to rescue the baby but lost the toddler. The police said their going to investigate the incident & obviously the kids weren't in car seats or seat belted in. They say the men spoke no english.

another bay area person?
did you read about the missing marin girl

Yes why didnt she have the child in a restraint?
Call me a skeptic.
She threw the child out the window.
if the child was hanging out the window and fell out, wouldnt the child fall on the road or the shoulder of the road/bridge?
if the child was standing up why didnt she stop the car and buckle the child up?
She threw that child out the window.

From Fox News
"Police were investigating reports that the SUV went out of control after it was struck from behind by a tractor-trailer.
Another driver, Keisha Bethley, said she saw the SUV strike a retaining wall on a ramp over the river and then roll over.
Jatima flew out the window, she said. Bethley said she immediately dialed 911 on her cellular phone, but the dispatcher accused her of placing a phony emergency call. "
It amazes me how so many of you that post on here are so quick to judge. It was an accident.. pure and simple.. Why judge a mom in her grief..

If the dispatcher thought it a joke, they should be fired. It is not up to them to make a judgment call, they are to contact the police and leave that call up to them! Hell, a few weeks ago driving home from work, I came across two rather large cows in the road, the dispatcher and I laughed, but they sent a car out. Also, many a 2 year old is able to get out of a car seat. God bless this family, whatever the case.

Imagine being in the mothers place. Having your child thrown out of a car window into a river and having no one else to blame but herself.
Don't accuse her of throwing her child out the window.

My goodness, "she threw the baby out the window."? Where is your empathy, my dear?
I agree with those who say to allow the mother her grief.
I have a 16, 15 and 14 year old (yes, I'm Catholic, but divorced so it evens out) and my 16 year old, after rolling her 2 month old car 360 degrees, should have been thrown from the window. But,she survived. Why? Because she wears her seatbelt as do my other two.
I taught them that. The problem, perhaps in this case, has to do with education. Let's not blame those who can not help themselves, as they know not how to help others.
Oh yeah, I've also taught them to NOT rely on the rhythm method for birth control. You go RJ! I admire your courage! Three in three was enough for me! lol.

OK, OK, six for six here, 24,23,22,19,19,18, I taught my girls, rythm is a dancer lol. Someone posted earlier about some texans, another asked if they were mexicans. I am a half spanish,Irish catholic, that would explain the kids. But on the other hand, I noticed, the mexicans, spanish, think different than white americans. And I do not mean that as an insult, I happen to love the mexican customs and people. After all, there is not instruction manuel given at the birth of a child. Most of us have to admitt, the things we learn while raising children, is sometimes learned from the misfortune of others.

My apologies to the mother, my news broadcast didnt give the full story.
A witness saw the van swerving out of control as the driver hit the embankment and the child flew out the window.
Thank goodness for cell phones.
The witness called it into 911 who thought it was a joke.
Thank goodnees for persistentence on the part of the witness.
Rescuers are doubtful they will find the child alive.
However, the family is holding out hopes that the child will be found alive as do I.
I am so sorry this happened. Again my apologies to the mother and the family for me being a doubting Thomas.

I feel so sad for the mother and father of this child. With the impact of the truck hitting them from behind it coudl have very well broke the seat belt they said she had on. I cannot speculate and say she did not have one on as I was not there. This is a sad story and I pray for the family is this sad time in their life. I hope they find the child alive or dead so they can go on with their life. My heart hurts for them. :O(
