Sharm el-Sheik Terrorism: Round Up Of Early Coverage

The death toll continues to mount as wire reports around the world buzz with word of multiple explosions in Sharm el-Sheik, an Egyption vacation spot visited by a host of multi-national visitors this time of year. Latest reports suggest approximately fifty dead and over 200 wounded.

As of now, early word is The wounded included 13 Italians, five Britons, three Spaniards, three Saudis, a Ukrainian, a Russian, a Turk and an Israeli Arab, spokeswoman Hala el-Khatib said.

Obviously, Britain is not yet recovered from its own recent bout with terrorism in London itself.

A number of British tourists are feared dead after three car bombs exploded in quick succession in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheik, ripping through a hotel and a coffee shop packed with European and Egyptian holidaymakers. Security officials said at least 49 people died in the deadliest attack in Egypt in nearly a decade. "There seemed to be a lot of bodies strewn across the road" near one cafe, British policeman Chris Reynolds, visiting from Birmingham, told the BBC by telephone. "It was horrendous."

A series of at least three blasts began at approximately 1:15 AM local time, targeted were the Ghazala Gardens and the Movenpick Hotel, with a third blast said to have detonated at a minibus parking lot in the Old Market.

Additional reports below. No group is known to have come forward and taken responsibility for the acts at this time.

The powerful blasts, beginning at 1:15 a.m. local time, rattled windows kilometres away and sent panicked holiday-goers streaming out of hotels and clubs. Smoke and fire rose from Naama Bay, a main strip of beach hotels in the desert city at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, also popular with Israeli tourists, witnesses said.

A car broke into the hotel compound and exploded in front of the building, South Sinai Governor Mustafa Afifi said. Egyptian tourist hotels always have police guards at the gates. "I have never been so scared in the whole of my life," British tourist Samantha Hardcastle said of the bombs. "The explosion we felt was very violent and the hotel we are staying in shook," she told BBC television. "It was absolutely horrific." It was the worst attack on tourist targets in Egypt since militant Islamists trying to bring down the government killed 58 tourists at an ancient temple near Luxor in 1997.

The blast ripped through a nearby outdoor coffee shop, killing 17 people, believed to be Egyptians, said a security official in the operations control room in Cairo monitoring the crisis.

In 1995 I was living in Barhain..beautiful island, I was in the military....anyway, that was when the Dah'Rahn bombings occurred in Saudia Arabia. They lituarlly bombed the hell out of a US Military barracks. That bomb was so deadly and powerful it shocked waved our entire island. It was like an earthquake. My point, well, these bobings and radical movements have been going on for years. It is now, after 9/11 that they seen "more so" because many people didn't pay attention to what was going on in the rest of the world. Once things start to hit home, people tend to open their eyes more. This world has been at war since the beginning of time, so people should not panick, we can not personally stop it, but keep the faith and hope our soldiers kick the crap out of those sickos once and for all.

Unfortunately, stopping these maniacs cannot be done by military forces. In the past, "war" had a few semi-noble rules about killing civilians. These maniacs "have no rules" therefore every person who is able should be carrying a weapon. The fact that we live in a nation that thrives on "fear" leads me to believe that most people will just continue to give up their rights, sit home and continue the hypnotic TV-beer life. I should point out to you , though, in the interest of objective truth, that most of those Palestinian attacks in the '60s through early '80s cannot be considered "Islamic" terrorist attacks. Though a majority of Palestinians are Muslim, the PLO and its partners and offshoots were not a Muslim-identified organization. One of the chief architects of Palestinian terror, in fact, was George Habash, a Palestinian Christian. He (and many other PLO-types) were not fundamentalist religious types at all, but, rather, left-leaning godless Russian-type Marxists.
