I do agree with the posts which point out that the problem is not spirituality but violence. And i do agree that we ourselves have a violent society, violence that is reflected in many daily acts against each other in our own communities. There is plenty of room and need for humans to grow and evolve, and a better world is sure to result, eventually.
But!
Please open your eyes to the widespread and pervasive reality of a very broad based, well funded anti-western terrorist movement, allied with and led by fanatical believers in Islam. It was wrong to kill in the name of Christ, it's wrong to kill in the name of Allah. It's despicable. And to my thinking, these folks are the most "retarded" in terms of that very evolution you are hoping for. If they are not contained and made impotent, we may never have the chance to evolve at all.
Here in the west, we have the rights and even the expectation that we will engage in such debates. With those people there is no room for debate at all. We are not playing by the same rules, and the way you feel about them is not mirrored by the way they feel about you. And I am talking about millions of people who have been conditioned and educated to hate us.
Do you know much about Islam?
I know more than a little, and have seen how such things as the concept of the Muslim Umma have been interpreted to separate Mulims and non Muslims in terms of their rights and what acts against them are sanctioned and which are forbidden.
I don't want to preach here, but the Islamic "street" has adopted a pretty frightening and racist form of their religion. The moderates and spiritually advanced are not in control.

Don't like generalizations, yes, I understand why.
but they are sometimes necessary to deal with overwhelming attack.
Now are any of you really saying that there is nothing we should be doing to defuse this atmosphere of ratcheting violence? Just "understand" it?
I understand it, really, I think I do. But what is happening is unjust, and i believe we need to defend ourselves against it.
Here in NYC, we had a case of a "Sheik" who was arrested and convicted of funneling "charitable contributions" from Muslim believers to terrorist groups, as well as preaching sermons inciting his listeners to violence against western institutions and governments. He and his followers all lived and worked in this area, smiling and taking the money we paid for goods and services and waiting for the day that it could be used against us.

I have a major problem with that.

What should we do?
(Please don't tell me to have Bush withdraw from muslim countries, etc. Or for Israel to leave the middle east. I have already thought those ideas through and believe that they are only stalking horses for the real conflict, which is much broader in nature. I am afraid that my knowledge of conditions in countries with Muslim dominated governments has made it very difficult to believe that there is any good will or desire to "understand" us to be expected from them. Their women don't even get that from their own societies.

Britain failed to protect London even after Israel warned Britain of coming Al-Queda terror – inefficiency or conspiracy?

Israel knew and warned United Kingdom of possible terror plots to disrupt life in London. But British authorities failed to respond accordingly to deter the attacks, according to an unconfirmed rumor circulating in intelligence circles. Israel is keeping quiet for the time being with a lot of pressure on them.

Fact of the matter is that British Authorities knew it is coming, warned the Israelis before the first bomb. The Associated Press reported July 7 that an anonymous source in the Israeli Foreign Ministry said Scotland Yard had warned the Israeli Embassy in London of possible terrorist attacks in the U.K. capital. The information reportedly was passed to the embassy minutes before the first bomb struck at 0851 London time. The Israeli Embassy promptly ordered Israeli Finance Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to remain in his hotel on the morning of July 7. Netanyahu was scheduled to participate in an Israeli Investment Forum Conference at the Grand Eastern Hotel, located next to the Liverpool Street Tube station -- the first target in the series of bombings that hit London on July 7.

The biggest question of the day is British Authorities knew and protected Israeli Finance Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, then why not common British citizens in London?

Several hours later, Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom officially denied reports that Scotland Yard passed any information to Israel regarding the bombings, and British police denied they had any advanced warning of the attacks. The British authorities similarly denied that any information exchange had occurred.

But the fact is Israeli Finance Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stayed in his hotel knowing very well what was coming. Why British Authorities did not tell the common people of Britain about what was coming if they knew that Al-Queda was about to strike?

According to international rumor circle, Britain just failed to act even after being warned by the Israelis days before the attack.

London's Terror Thursday: Netanyahu Warned?

The Associated Press is reporting that Scotland Yard informed the Israeli Embassy in London moments before Terror Thursday dawned that attacks were imminent, according to a "senior Israeli official." Former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was scheduled to show up at a conference slated to take place in a hotel directly above a subway station where one of the blasts went off. AP avers "The warning prompted him to stay in his hotel room instead, government officials said."

The story is datelined Jersusalem, and so we are talking about Israeli officials in this instance, not Scotland Yard.

I am listening now to Brian Paddock of Scotland Yard saying that no one received any warnings: that the authorities – the London authorities, that is – had no intelligence that led them to believe terrorist attacks were coming. Less than an hour later, reporter Andrea Mitchell is saying that the warnings came “after the attacks,” which would seem rather inexplicable, but there you have it.

We report -- you decide. However, one has to wonder why the AP is citing several unnamed Israeli government officials in support of this story. Why did Netanyahu stay in his hotel room instead of attending the conference? If Scotland Yard didn't warn him, then who did?

This isn't the first time that Israeli foreknowledge of a terrorist attack against the West has been raised by a reputable source. One has to wonder: why is it that these reports of Israeli foreknowledge come up with such metronomic regularity? With all that smoke, is there really no fire?

In spite of the denials coming in, the question is: is the Associated Press lying? And if the Israelis are disturbed by these rumors -- and they may just be rumors -- one has to wonder why Israeli government officials seem to be spreading them.

On December 11, 2001, Carl Cameron of Fox News -- hardly the nexus of anti-Israeli sentiment in the U.S. -- reported the following:

"There is no indication that the Israelis were involved in the 9-11 attacks, but investigators suspect that they Israelis may have gathered intelligence about the attacks in advance, and not shared it. A highly placed investigator said there are 'tie-ins.' But when asked for details, he flatly refused to describe them, saying, "evidence linking these Israelis to 9-11 is classified. I cannot tell you about evidence that has been gathered. It's classified information."

In The Terror Enigma: 9/11 and the Israeli Connection, I make the case that the Israelis knew something was afoot, and this alleged warning to Netanyahu -- and I emphasize the word alleged quite deliberately -- repeats that ominous pattern.

UPDATE: This report from Wales says that Netanyahu was going to attend the conference, "but the attacks occurred before he arrived." Quite different from not showing up due to a warning. The report goes on to note that "Just before the blasts, Scotland Yard called the security officer at the Israeli Embassy and said warnings of possible attacks had been received, the [senior Israeli] official said." Here is the first report on the Netanyahu warning, which is attributed to Agence France Presse.

UPDATE II: Stratfor.com, the respected national security-intelligence analysts, has published an account of the alleged Israeli warning that confirms, at least to some extent, the above: that the source of the warning wasn't Scotland Yard, but rather came from the Israelis themselves. Unfortunately, this is part of their "premium" content, as is available only to subscribers [someone has already posted it on the internet, of course]. Here's the money quote:

"Contrary to original claims that Israel was warned 'minutes before' the first attack, unconfirmed rumors in intelligence circles indicate that the Israeli government actually warned London of the attacks 'a couple of days' previous."
